This is a sad and painful sight to see for anyone who had the pleasure to enjoy the wonderful food and service provided by the Hruska Family at the Dam store.
If you are able to support them in any way, a go fund me has been setup for them:

Exactly. The new cliff is unstable, and there will undoubtedly be a major construction project in the immediate area soon to stabilize the bridge and deal with the dam. The store was in danger of falling into the river and adding to the debris downstream, and would likely have to be removed to make way for the inevitable construction. Sad to see this lovely spot so desecrated but Climate Change has much, much more in store for us puny, foolish humans. We will forget the Dam Store when the first Cat 5 hurricanes start hitting this summer.

There's zero excuse for this... First off they could of cleared the debris with cranes and grapples... They could of done what other dam operators do and have debris nets upstream from the gates, They could of protected the bank with rip rap and stones when the dam first began overtopping... The officials sat there for 5 days watching.... They made no attempts to mitigate the situation... Sad Sad Sad...

@@chrisjohnson4666 You are clearly an non-thinking reactionary that has no idea what the power of a river like this is capable of doing. Nothing you said in your comment would have changed the ultimate outcome of this. That is a lot of power in that water, and it's not just the water but all the abrasive material like sand, silt, and stones that are rapidly eating away at the bank.

I guess the cost to tear it down was cheaper than moving it. I don't think the store was in immediate threat of falling into the river, however, the slope will need to be fixed as it will fail eventually on it's own and not due to more undercutting.
@DJFPhantomPhan
@DJFPhantomPhan Ай бұрын
I don’t know that the decision was about cost. I’m guessing that they demolished it to avoid more large debris being washed downstream. It’s unlikely that it would have been safe enough to move it. That takes time and a lot more equipment. They can’t risk either of those things right now.

Thank you. 2:21 & 3:06 was what I wanted to see: How much were the logs blocking the flow? Answer: A lot. It probably looks different now than when more logs were floating, but significant blockage. Why did the operators let it build up like that? Surely they have procedures to monitor and remove logs.

Why wasn't the debris cleared from the spillway under the road? One man on an excavator with a thumb attachment could've prevented this mess. Reach over the edge, grab the logs, pitch them over the dam. Load them on a truck if possible. We do it on low water bridges everytime it floods so cars can pass and not get washed downstream. Whoever is in charge of the dam should be asked the same question.

The snow melt came down from the rockies into Nebraska in 2019… floods everywhere. Then to top it off the Missouri Dam Management - under edict to save the piping plover - released MORE water into the Missouri- broke an old Damn - one guy lived at the base of it, got swept away and they have never found him… people farming the river soil ended up with sand farms. Creating a state wide disaster - got DUA and then all was winding down and Covid pandemic hit…. Crazy crazy time …

The Spencer Dam on the Niobrara River got hit by a historic flood and ice flow. That double whammy destroyed that low-head hydroelectric dam. The Cornell Dam upstream is still in place. The Lake Minnechaduza Dam on Minnechaduza Creek has been modified for other purposes. The Long Pine Dam on Pine Creek went out in the early 1960s. The Northern Nebraska Power Company built the Spencer Dam. Wilber B. Foshay bought the others from their original owners, but it was the Interstate Power Company that modernized those dams in the late 1920s and early 1930s. There was another on Plum Creek northwest of Ainsworth.
