As a clinician, I have absolutely seen TBI’s impact an individuals functioning, impulse control, and personality. I’ve even seen it with a wonderful friend who was so kind previously; but then lost all impulse control and hurt others, could no longer maintain employment, lost her children and ended up divorced. It would definitely be indicative of his emotional immaturity, possibly also his predatory nature - but not necessarily. Predators almost always prey on those they consider to be weak. Weakness could be age related (both young and old), financial, mental, educational, among others. I would agree with you that it's probably part of this jerk's particular predator's mindset, but I believe that his head injury at 14 was at least as relevant. If you are interested in current research and thoughts on brain anatomy, function, and criminality (including biological, genetic, and social/parenting research) I would refer you to Dr. Adrian Raine's book "The Anatomy Of Violence". It's an easily accessible, very complete guide to the past, present, and future of criminal psychology and the research of criminal personalities and brain anatomy.

I, too, was living in the same area of Baltimore County at the time of this incident. Roads were blocked off, a whole neighborhood was inaccessible and it was really a terrifying, movie-like escapade. The police did indeed miss many opportunities to catch the guy, but I have to blame our lenient justice system. Great analysis Dr. Grande, fascinating to hear the psychological side. Thank you.

Over the years I've read about a lot of people who became impulsive and/or often violent after sustaining head injuries. It's often been said how somebody's personality totally changed after brain trauma. Comedians Sam Kinison and Roseanne Barr are examples of this. On a darker side, killers like Fred West by all accounts totally changed for the worst after a motorcycle accident as a teen.

It seems to me that this sequence of events (head injury followed by criminal activity) has happened in enough famous cases to be something to be investigated so that there is protection both for the public and the individual!

I agree. And taking into account the most popular types of spectator sports, it's worrisome the number of current or former MMA professionals (atleast those who fight in the UFC) and NFL (American football) players who are known for behaving erratically and dangerous or even become abusive to their partners after some time in their professional sport. Especially with the UFC fights (mixed martial arts) I have heard people be upset when hugely advertised fights end in judges' decision (because no one was knocked out). It's also my understanding that because of the way that the UFC is a bit fickle, if you don't return relatively soon and/or keep turning down opportunities to fight, you may not be asked again + fans forget about you. Because of this, the professional who was knocked unconscious probably ends up feeling really pressured to return to fight within maybe 3-5 months, especially if they are getting offers to "redeem themselves" for having lost by knock out previously. I think all of it is a recipe for actual tragedy and disaster.

"Brain Injury to Standoff": I don't get it. A brain injury is perhaps the most serious injury. And then we wonder why someone is behaving oddly. Richard Ramirez suffered a brain injury. Charles Whitman had a brain tumor. Isn't there any way to recognize that brain injuries cause criminal behavior or other odd patterns of conduct? Clearly this man had no control over his behavior. Joseph was a good looking guy. He was capable of finding romantic partners. But above anything else, he was an expert at standoffs. For this reason I suggest we learn all we can by weighing the significance Joseph found in "the standoff." What does it mean to be in a standoff? We need to get past your average police standoff. Of course we know what that is. Joseph is inside threatening victims and the bumbling cops are outside trying to create a "strategy" to bring the guy down. We witnessed all of this watching Dog Day Afternoon (1975), one of Al Pacino's finest performances. But what is the deeper meaning of "the standoff"? From a metaphysical perspective, we are involved in three types of standoffs. The first is with our own body. This is the case no matter how healthy or fortunate we are because environmental conditions can change and become deadly in moments. Then there is the "standoff" with others. In a dog-eat-dog world where most people see all social transactions as a zero sum game, we are in perpetual standoffs with our neighbors, our family members, and our enemies. Finally there is the cosmic standoff. A cosmic standoff occurs when we realize that we are born alone, will die alone, and will be completely forgotten. Please, manage your own standoffs well. You don't have much time left. Enjoy!😁

I was in the local area at the time of this event. The police reaction was abysmal. Several times during the standoff, the SWAT team had him in their sights and failed to take the proper action by eliminating the threat. This is after he had committed murder, kidnapping, firing at the police and threatening his hostages with death. It wasn't until some of the hostages managed to drug him and sneak out of the house that they forced the police to take action.

There is a lot of males that I feel that actually have Borderline Personality Disorder that are misdiagnosed with Bipolar, PTSD, or Complex PTSD and yes some of these can have co-morbidity with BPD but many times the BPD is overlooked which does not help with treatment. My ex-husband's psychiatrist told us he believed my ex after treating him for a few years for Bipolar that did a few months sessions with me included then determined he actually had BPD but told us he purposely would not include that diagnosis in his paperwork because "it's too much of a stigma for a patient" meanwhile he neglected to explain the treatment is Dialectical Behavior Therapy which is what he desperately needed. He admitted to us that he never even considered BPD because my ex-husband was a man and mostly women are diagnosed with BPD (I think this is an unfortunate oversight as I personally believe there is more males that fit the criteria then previously thought but there is a bit of bias thinking it effects only or mostly women. Less men seek out therapy in general for one) but when he actually sat down to do couples sessions he began to see the patterns his constant interpersonal problems especially with romantic partners, his black & white thinking, his sudden idealization & then devaluation of relationships including friendships, his turn on a dime mood swings & anger issues, his impulsivity including reckless behavior like reckless dangerous driving or impulsive spending money issues, his fear of abandonment. He did a constant push & pull where he would be wonderful for a few months then start acting cold & distant to the point of acting like he can't stand to be around me then I would either tell him I can't take it anymore I'm leaving or pack a bag. He'd then plea sometimes break down in tears begging me not to leave him or say he didn't want to live anymore if I left and I'd unfortunately stay. And the cycle would start all over again. I thought because he was in therapy that he was working on things but turns out he just mostly got medication without addressing any of his actual issues and never received proper DBT therapy.

My husband flew over the top of a car and landed on his head when in medical school. He began having episodes of anger and rage, began drinking, and committed suicide. My son had a friend with CTE and I believe my husband had CTE. My son’s friend died a natural death and everyone was terribly relieved, because he was well-loved but a danger to his wife and kids. I'm so sorry for the loss you suffered. My 1st husband passed away while sleeping ontop of me. So I know all too well how much that loss hurts. However, with all due respect, your hubby having that one single incident wouldn't have caused CTE. A TBI (traumatic brain injury) is what your husband would have gotten. CTE is caused by repetitive blows to the Head. Including people that have constant head trauma such as football players, hockey players ect. A single blow To The Head would not cause a case of CTE. However, everything that you mentioned would still be very possible and present in a case of a traumatic brain injury.

I will never forget when this happened. I had several family stuff that grew up and went to school with him and they all said it didn’t surprise them. Our school and neighborhoods were all on lockdown. David Myers was the maintenance worker at my husband’s apartment complex. He was killed in front of a friend of ours. It's really sad how a person can be normal one day and then a head injury will change their entire personality. It's like u can blame him but u can't because technically, it's not their fault. This could be anybody and it's scary.... what's even more frightening is that all it takes is a sports car to get a woman to fall in love.

Hi Dr Grande , on a rainy Saturday evening I am cozy in bed binge watching you! Why does bipolar get used as a catch all diagnosis for many people with only personality disorders? The entire analysis is cringe worthy for sure Her boss and the husband being murdered the neighbor too!, but the parents leaving their son in the house with him jolted me In a way they should have been charged or maybe the son should have sought representation to sue them when he got older I do not agree with you however they could have grabbed him covered his mouth and ran I’m sure that boy now a man has never gotten over it

Agree about bipolar. But disagree with 'only personality disorders'. They are as valid a diagnosis as any other and need for support. I only hear of borderline pd (aka emotionally unstable - eupd) being mixed up with bipolar diagnoses, as there is symptom overlap, but the patterns of those symptoms are different.

What is so weird is that I am from the neighborhood where this guy lived. Essex, MD. One of his victims was a guy I knew from years ago. But it's so strange because me and my friends knew through other friends in other parts of the area knew just about all of the crazy guys. That's why me and my buddies were in amazement, how did we not know about this guy? And he was a psychopath, until he runs into grown men. To me he was nothing but a psychopathic bully. Seen it my entire life. Guys act nuts then as soon as they are confronted by men....all of the sudden it's all over.

The leniency of his sentences was certainly made up for with the fact that they shot him 27 times when finally caught. Very confused by the police handling of this case, why the dog!?😭 and the fact that Joseph was able to enter the house is terrible.
