The border post on the alpine frontier between France and Italy is crumbling. Meanwhile, down by the sea, people hoping for protection and a better life in Europe are being turned away. Europe has become a continent of contradictions. Once upon a time, the fall of the Iron Curtain and the increasing permeability of European Union frontiers represented growing unity. Now, more police are guarding borders like the one between Liguria and the Alpes Maritimes than perhaps any other frontier within the EU. Here, France is turning away refugees who have reached Italy mainly via the Mediterranean or the Balkan route and want to move on to northern Europe.
Funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.

I like these documentaries which highlight the problems with open borders etc. These give good information of current news and people on the move. I understand there are alot of people who want to do good for illegal migrants but what they need to understand is life is even difficult for migrants who migrated to EU and UK in 1950's and 1960's. My family have not only invested in the UK but also contributed throughput our working lives. Our NHS is non functional. Our schools cant cope and there is no affordable housing. We now have uncontrolled migration and during the past 5 years the UK has become a dumping ground. We no longer have a quality standard of life, we are no longer safe on our streets. We have enough EU criminals who roam our streets and are looked after by the state. The whole of Africa is burdening the EU. If these people do not stop invading other countries then we have no future. I am 64 and still working since I was 17. I can't retire yet and my body is becoming tired now. Is it fair to allow young men to enter illegally and be put up in 5 star hotels with nothing to do...good luck, we have destroyed the future of our grandchildren. How many more will arrive on our shores 😮

They should not be distributed among all the countries of Europe, they should be turned back and relocated into their own countries or at least in Africa. Freedom of movement in the EU does not mean everyone from everywhere can come in the EU, it means EU citizens (this is important, CITIZENS) get to move around in Europe freely. EU subsidizing places in Europe is normal, this is what the tax money is for, we are all happy to pay it. It is not to subsidize the citizens of FOREIGN, non-EU countries. To be humane towards these people they need to stop believing the BS that Europe is "open for welfare" for everyone. This is not and cannot be the case. The EU should encourage nations, and even do its own initiative, to crack down on human traffickers who are abusing these people and also shut down the trafficking cartels. Criminals are getting fabulously rich by abusing EU borders.

Every day, your reporting is more disappointing! I cannot believe that you are doing a documentary on this issue, in the Roya Valley, without even mentioning the amazing contribution of Cédric Herrou, who has rescue countless exhausted migrants coming through his property in the mountains, who has been taken to court by the French authorities for having the audacity to help people in need. After years of incessant harassment by the French judicial system and right-wing politicians, Cedric finally won and founded the first agriculture based Emmaus community, and continues to help migrants in need. I seriously can't believe Cedric doesn't feature in your documentary, simply baffling!

@@LinhLe-cc9ofgruesome blue collar work is extremely needed in Europe and no one wants to do it, a lot of the migrants have experience working in masonry, as electricians, plumbers, farm laborers …etc the only thing they require is accompanying them closely to learn and be certified to work with European standards and that will give Europe a 10x boost in productivity. But no one is thinking of that because it sounds very « socialist » so they’re left with a migrant integration problem.

Europe needs to put a stop to the wars in their home countries, stop wars in their tracks, stop wars before they begin... Europe needs to play a far more active and pro-active role in well known-hotspots that fuel the misery of these people. And waring fractions in these hotspots need to be made aware that they there will be serious European counter-action to their domestic hostilities, justice, etc. Unfortunately Europe has been unable, unwilling, divided, dealing with wars and hostilities on its own land... to pursue the above.

@@dimitristsagdis7340 Yeah but all of Europe doesn't act as a political entity. It's the EU and then some nation states. Also there are limit as to the purpose and scope of the EU. It just a union of individual countries.

If there was no freedom of movement of people in the EU then there would not be a problem with the mess today. Tranding union fine but not federal union. I am glad the UK left the EU.

OMG!!! You are all over this comment section with this name!!!! You don’t think he is and will be the the only perpetrator in history that illegally migrated from another country and hurt someone, right? The justice system failed the family with only 11 years in prison.
