Lee Kuan Yew considers Deng Xiaoping as the greatest leader he's ever met. But Lee was also highly respected by Deng and modelled many aspects of China on the Singapore model.
Find out more in the video about how they first met and how tiny Singapore was so instrumental in China's growth story.

Additional Notes: Lee, who wanted to make Deng feel comfortable on his visit to Singapore, arranged for an ashtray (and a ventilation system to suck out any smoke) and his finest Ming porcelain spittoon to be placed next to Deng during their meetings - despite Lee embarking on a series of no-smoking and spitting campaigns at the time. However out of respect, Deng did not use them. Singapore's MOFA on the relationship: Since the mid-1990s, more than 50,000 Chinese officials have come to Singapore for various study visits and training programmes. China is the only country with which the Singapore government has entered into major development projects., namely (a) the China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park; (b) the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City; and (c) the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity. They have also established a state-level bilateral level cooperation project, the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City and several private sector-led, government-supported projects such as the Singapore-Sichuan Hi-Tech Innovation Park, the Nanjing Eco High-Tech Island, and the Jilin Food Zone. In addition, they also launched the Singapore-China (Shenzhen) Smart City Initiative. At the provincial level, they have eight provincial business and economic councils with Sichuan, Shandong, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Tianjin, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shanghai.

Michael Pillsbury, Director for Chinese Strategy at the Hudson Institute and author of "The Hundred-Year Marathon: China's Secret Strategy to Replace America as the Global Superpower," on how US government agencies secretly aided the rise of communist China. USA helped China enter the WTO Bill Clinton helped China join the WTO. China joined in November 11, 2001 Doha . America made China rich. America helped China to become rich . China's biggest customer is the USA. The majority of China's customers are Americans . America is dependent on China for almost everything and wants to keep it that way. Unfortunately China has abused that position by weaponizing it , and has become a threat to the stability of the world. And this is why China has very few allies. In the 1970s, I remember that my parents would send money and clothings to our relatives in China. Singapore and China were utterly poor. But we did what we could to help our relatives. Fast forward 50 years, I would witness - during my lifetime - the rise of Singapore to become one of the richest countries on Earth - and China becoming the world's second largest economy. I am no expert on the economy. But I do know that for a country to succeed, you need strong leaders with iron in them, incorruptible and above all, they gave their all to their country. I have worked for 1 year in Singapore and 24 years in China. It’s true that they have a similar system: very centralised, pragmatic, long term planning, meritocratic. But I believe instead of saying one is copying another, they are more inline with traditional Chinese governance system since Han dynasty. Communism was an imported ideology from the West, China is moving back to its roots.

Singapore was a colony of the West but that doesn't mean that we adopted British culture. If you compare that to the 5000 years of Chinese history, the British rule over Singapore was just a blimp. It is undeniable fact that today's development in China was significantly influenced by Singapore. Deng Xiaoping, the architect of China's economic reforms, drew considerable inspiration from Singapore's rapid modernization and economic success under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew. Deng visited Singapore in the late 1970s and early 1980s, where he observed the benefits of market-oriented policies combined with strong central governance. He admired how Singapore managed to achieve rapid economic growth while maintaining social stability and effective governance. This model resonated with Deng, who sought to implement similar strategies in China. As a result, many of the economic reforms and open-door policies that Deng introduced were influenced by Singapore's approach. These reforms have played a crucial role in transforming China into a global economic powerhouse, demonstrating the profound impact of Singapore's development model on China's growth trajectory.

@@maggiechan33 No, what he and many means, Lee contributed in his own way and a huge one to China modernisation at the right time just when China begin its opening up. No matter how Deng and his comrades are eager in spurring China economic growth, they lack the knowledge and experience in running a country after decades of closing up to the world . That is when Lee 's advice to Deng was so important. First Singapore is made up of 75% Chinese in population. Because not only Singapore economic development was successful, its population is generally made up of 75 percent ethnic Chinese(Confucianist ways) which makes it a very good model for China to emulate. Lee, already an outstanding nation builder, has suggested ways how to boost China economic zones by sending consultants not only then but consistently for the next 3 decades. He also lent Deng large volumes of books related on Singapore laws which Deng and the leaders after him studied intently. The meritocratic political system which Singapore leaders are picked in term of education, capabilities, performance in their career, beliefs on major matters, etc are picked up and used in many ways in China's own selection of leaders political system . Most of the important leaders are picked on merits and performance. Of course China is so huge that corruption and bribery or special relationship to obtain certain leadership post is unavoidable but overall the political leaders in the central government and the civil service are pragmatic and perform well in their tasks.

..must disagree, former Paramount Leader Deng Xiaoping would have truly saved China and the Chinese people, if he had allowed and accepted the Democracy Movement to take shape ...during the Tiananmen Square Student Protest, in 1989, instead he sent in armed PLA troops ..crushed all dissenters. Otherwise, PRChina today would be so much a different Country. Additionally, Deng implemented "one-child" family policy, perhaps influenced by Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's flawed policy of "Stop-at-Two" , which led to over 300 million Chinese Citizens' abortions during the period (Sept.25, 1980 to Jan. 1, 2016) and other negative results. Today, 2024, PRChina faces a population crisis ....too many old Chinese pensioners and insufficient / enough young Chinese in the labor force (i.e. if they can find work during the present "de-risking" of PRChina).

This video is THE BEST video I ve seen on KZbin. It is SPOT ON. China learned the most from Singapore . Why ? Because Singapore is a one party or one man led country for 31yrs yet they achieved prosperity. Lee Kwon Yew Ruled Singapore for 31 yrs. In current day Western countries opinion, they will call him a dictator. The success lies not on so called “democratic elections “, but on Education, good governance, and technology. One of the biggest difference between 1978 China and North Korea is MAO has no heir. His only Son died in the Korean War, by American Bomber. We are thankful to that American bomber so that nowadays China is not like North Korea. I was born in 1983 and at that time China was as poor as India and many African countries, and I have witnessed the unbelievable changes throughout my Life. Nowadays the living standards of China rival that of many developed countries. Thank you so much, my brother from Africa, the mother and fatherland. Wonderful video of a wonderful and beautiful city, clean, sophisticated, super modern city, that the Western ern MSM doesn't want the world to see.. Just as it is for you and your other viewers, you're doing a great job opening the eyes of your viewers about Russia. I live in New York City the skyscraper capital of United States and I'm impressed with the architectural masterpieces shown in the Moscow city, within the city of Moscow itself. As for haters who call Russia a third world country, they do so out of envy, just like late US senator McCain called Russia a gas station with nuclear weapons. Don't forget they say the same thing about Africa as a continent where people live on trees and untamed wild animals roam the streets. It's pure unadulterated racism and hate. When they use such derogatory language to describe Russia just tell yourself the truth is the direct opposite of what they want the world to believe. Thank God for content creators like you, the truth is coming out. Russia has a lot of firsts, invention of the helicopter, first mation to go to space, a military superpower, largest empire, a member of G8 until it was kicked out by the West after annexing Crimea, etc., etc. What's more, it's the largest country in the world with the biggest concentration of agricultural mineral resources in the world to to mention oil and gas, etc.

China’s success today undoubtedly was due to Teng who had unquestionably learned from Lee’s successful experience in running a prosperous Singapore. Lee had had contributed much to China. For example, he told Teng China must first concentrate on education and open up to foreign investments as after d cultural revolution, China was almost in chaos. But praise must be given to Chinese masses who really worked hard to achieve what they hv achieved today. Western nations are trying to turn China into a country from an authoritarian dictatorship into a nation with freedom and democracy, just like the Western countries. So yes, from Chinese government’s point of view, the West is trying to “run down” China on the political level. The western nations saw greatness in China and wanted it to become their true ally, but first China needs to become as democratic and free as the Western nations. Chinese citizens should be governed by officials cared about the people and listen to their voices, things most current Chinese government officials claimed to have achieved but is simply not true. China would become one of the best places to live in around the world if China becomes a democratic and free country similar to the USA, South Korea and Japan. The island of Taiwan is the best example how great a place to live in China would be if China carries out a successful reform into a democratic and free society. But now, despite all the economic advancements, great infrastructure, etc… as long as China remains an authoritarian dictatorship, it will never fully boom under the World stage.

There's something unique about Singapore that many people dont know, Singapore first prime minister LKY told every citizens in the country to learn from the world, pragmatism and what works & get things done. Did Singapore learn from USA,UK,Japan , Netherlands & China all these time as well ? The answer is yes. Singapore did learn from usa,uk , Japan, Israel when they just got their independence, taking the best practices of democracy and fuse it with abit of china socialist systems. 65 percent democracy 35 percent socialist. Singapore primary ethos is always seek the best practices from everyone in the globe and to remain humble.because Singapore has zero natural resources, they use the best brains we humans have to have a place at the table in a dangerous world. Just like Deng Xiaoping's evaluation of Mao Zedong, Deng said Mao is 70% was right and 30% was wrong. I think most Chinese people agree with Deng's evaluation. Because Mao Zedong liberated China from colonists, he defeat Japan, USA, India and Soviet aggression, A century of national humiliation ended due to Mao, or PRC will be American satellite state like Japan EU but poor like India Africa.. Deng saved Chinese from Mao’s wrong economic policies (Maoism is more extreme left than the Soviet Union), or CCP will be gone like CCCP, China will be disintegrated like Yugoslavia. Deng Xiaoping was still a tough leader, but he was not particularly ideological. He was more of a pragmatist. More ironically, Deng also saved Indochina from communism/Vietnamese, or ASEAN will be unified as one country, and chairman will be Vietcong leader.

The Lee Kuan Yew Hakka family 1. Books and speeches In a number of LKY's books and speeches, he stated how proud a Hakka he was. In a 1997 interview, he said "Fortunately for me, I have a high threshold for pain. I am a Hakka. Hakka can take a lot of pain. So, I survived." This line can be found in the book on LKY's 80 most famous quotes. In a Parliament speech, LKY said "In 1955 when I went to Tanjong Pagar to contest my first election, my opponent Lam Thian, a Hakka like me, challenged me to a debate in Mandarin in Tanjong Pagar." In 2009, during a visit to Fujian, China, LKY said "As a Hakka, I have strong feelings for Fujian." The Lee clan had migrated from the Hakka city of Longyan in Fujian to Dabu county in Guangdong. 2. Dialects spoken at home According to LKY, dialects were spoken in the Lee household without specifying what dialect they were. In an interview of the old servant-helper (majie) from the Lee household by Hong Kong TVB, she spoke her native Shunde Cantonese but use the Hakka "ngai" (meaning "I" or "me" which is unique to Hakka). Nobody in Shunde use "ngai". It can be inferred that she had been influenced by the Hakka language spoken in the Lee household. Lee Hsien Loong did spoke the Hakka words "zi gar ngin" (own people) in his 2022 National Day Rally Speech. 3. LKY family members In the Lee family's Oxley Road house, a picture of LKY's great grandfather, Lee Bok Boon, was hang in the living room. And the Lee family keep a copy of the Lee family genealogy records. LKY paternal great grandmother Seow Huan Neo is also Hakka. His maternal grandmother is Peranakan-Hakka. LKY's younger brother, Kim Yew, married a Hawaiian Hakka, Gloria Woo. Another younger brother, Suan Yew, married a Hakka, Pamela Chong. Lee Hsien Loong late wife, Wong Ming Yang, was a Hakka from Sabah, Malaysia. His present wife, Ho Ching, is also a Hakka. During LKY's 1987 National Day Rally speech, he recounted his conversation with Lee Hsien Loong: "You're marrying this girl, what is she?" This is most important. He says, "Oh, the father is Hakka." So it's very good. It is well-known that people tend to marry another from the same dialect group in the old days. 4. Lee Wei Ling In the last sentence of LKY's daugher, Lee Wei Ling, eulogy to LKY, she said "I nearly broke down, but I won't break down. I am a Hakka woman. So farewell, Papa. I will miss you. Rest in peace. And...be as tough as Hakkas come." She had also written a book titled "A Hakka Woman's Singapore Stories". 5. Ancestral home in China LKY younger brother, Suan Yew, had brought his family to visit their ancestral home in Dabu, China, and offered prayers at their great, grandfather's tomb. According to their cousin, Li Fensen, in Dabu, Suan Yew could understand his Hakka. Their father, Chin Koon, had previously sent money back to repair their ancestral home and for LKY's cousin illness in China. According to former Foreign Minister George Yeo, LKY took a great interest in the photographs of the ancestral home that Suan Yew had taken. 6. LKY friends Among LKY close friends when he was young were former minister Yong Nyuk Lin, a Hakka who married the sister of LKY's wife, Kwa Geok Choo, making Yong the brother-in-law of LKY. Other close friends were Hakka Hon Sui Sen, former Finance Minister and Hakka Yong Pung Lin, former Chief Justice. Two other close friends are Fong Kim Heng and Chia Chwee Leong, who are likely to be Hakka too. In the old days, It is well-known that people from the same dialect group tend to hang out with each other. 7. Char Yong (Dabu) Hakka Association LKY is the Honorary Life President of the Char Yong (Dabu) Hakka Association. Both LKY and Lee Hsien Loong had officiated at important events of Hakka clan associations. 8. Shoemaker and Tailor The Hakka shoemakers of Lee Hoi Wah Shoes are Mr and Mrs LKY personal shoemakers for decades. LKY also goes to a Hakka tailor for his suits. Perhaps in the old days, people have confidence in the craftsmanship of those from their own dialect group. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmXEpWaIrr-bZq8

@@silentmajority9162 If they don't want to work as hard, then they will not be rich like Singapore as Singaporean work hard just like the Japanese and Koreans and that produces good results.

Rubbish. If anything, most SE Asians are just jealous of Singapore, just look at the comments online and in their own media. And they never seem to learn anything. So backwards compared to China

The correct path i do believe, was we did tie a lot of friendship in asia. Western gov up till today i do feel they still look down on singapore and china.... but hey, you know why asia is prospering? Because we invest more on our own people then funding illegal wars.

I visit and admire Singapore on an annual basis. The people are not only some of the most educated people in the world but some of the kindest I’ve ever met. I’ve never heard an American talk poorly about Singapore. In fact, most people I know look forward to one day visiting such a wonderful country. We look up to Singapore not down at it. I’m sorry you feel that way.
