Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

Out west on the High Plains we have 600 hoses on our irrigators. That we call half milers.

When we were living)working in Iowa, one afternoon Sandi drove us out on a road that ran between corn fields. She had the tips off the car, and stopped and shut off the motor. She tried to convince me she could see/hear the corn growing. She was teasing me of course, but given how fast your irrigated corn is growing. I would almost believe you COULD see it grow :-)

Why do you use your air seeder over your normal bean planter when doing double crops?
@M8Stealth
@M8Stealth 3 ай бұрын
The air seeder has tighter row spacing which enables the soybean plants to more quickly canopy to shade the soil from moisture loss, less weeds grow, and maximizes amount of sunlight captured by leaves per acre.

You ever have the fitting you need. Always buy extras of the common stuff, especially of those that actually broke. I bet it’s not the last time. Get a nipple extractor too.

FYI: Folks should wear wrap-around eye protection when walking through corn that is at eye level. When I was a kid, my dad's eye was cut by a corn leaf and it got severely infected. He almost lost his eyesight in that eye.

Would a length of hydraulic hose as a replacement dropper provide some flexibility when pulling through rows, or would it stress something further up the machine?
@louisnemick1939

What about rubber hose to give it more flexibility.

I can see the day coming soon where the combine moves fast enough to have the grain cart by the combine all the way except the first outside set where the combine is cutting right near the rough. Or even following behind the combine on the first pass but combine would then have to feed the buggy over the combine rear. With the new ai for Tesla self driving cars it could position itself behind the combine. Then no tractor pulling cart but self powered carts. Even battery powered.

On the Draper, because you said you put it into flex mode for down wheat, I assume you don’t bother putting lockup hardware on the head? also do you put the center belt section into high speed for wheat or leave it in low? Have heard mixed reviews and curious as to your thoughts

I have found the yield lag between a shorter bean is less compared to a regular season bean when both are planted early. So, do you plant ,say a 2.5, on fields planned to go into wheat, allowing for an ealier harvest? I'm guessing you have no issues getting wheat in with 3.0 beans and would rather have the yield. But, we do have those challenging years trying to get the wheat in on time. Looks like the wye is catching. Raising the boom or shortening the drops may help.

Im not sure how i feel about the band of water. Your missing the center of the row and its nutrients to get into the plant i would think? If u get a rain then its probably fine. 3 tenths banded i think would be the same as 3 tenths from a shower. A corn plant funnels alot of water to its base
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 3 ай бұрын
Banding on the base of the plants is way more efficient. There's not near as many roots in the center of the rows and it's not like there's no moisture there.

Hey Mr Nathan I got a question and I figured you were the best person to ask! I planted corn in Wisconsin on my property.. added fertilizer when planted but we're always getting a lot of rain would I be better to top dress more fertilizer or do a liquid fertilizer corn is knee to waist high and what would you recommend as far as granulated fertilizer or liquid fertilizer thank you sir!
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 3 ай бұрын
Lot of variables there. Depends on soil tests and what you've already put on but I would think a liquid application of N and S would be helpful. I don't like granular over the top because anything that gets in the whirl will burn the leaves. Put the fertilizer on or in the ground
@scottcychosz6936
@scottcychosz6936 3 ай бұрын
Thank you! I put 19-19-19 on when planted but I'm sure most leached out with the rain any specific liquid you would recommend?
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 3 ай бұрын
@scottcychosz6936 28% and ATS will work. If you're taking about a sweetcorn patch in your garden and not a large plot just get a bag of dry AMS and band it along the base of the plants.
