Join me on a Giocoso interpretation of Bordogni / Rochut No. 7. Book mark the page below and let's play a few Rochut Etudes a day as part of your warm up.
Thanks for watching!! Let me know if you have any questions or ideas for future projects like this one in the comments below. 🤓
Recorded at New England Conservatory by James Donahue with help from Alex Knutrud. Royer Labs provided the awesome SF24V mic and Edwards Instrument Co. provided and customized the "Oft" model trombone.

I’ve been trying to emphasize phrasing on the Rochut etudes and your recordings help a lot. Beautiful vibrato and amazing tone quality

For anyone using a new edition (come with a CD), there is a misprint in measure 68. The notes Toby plays are G F Eb, rather than A G F. Helpful to know if you're playing along.

Thanks for these great videos; I hope you keep making them! I'm a horn player but these are incredible to practice keeping the air moving and good for middle low register. Bravo once again. I hope the BSO comes to DC!

This tune is my demon. It won't leave me alone. I even grind my tooth to it. Please stop playing in my head. Rochut, I haven't played a note of you in 15 years. Let me be.

Hey Toby, I know you're a super busy guy... but do you ever think you could do one of the duets written for these Rochuts? I just wanted to see how you would approach accompanying a vocalise line with another one. Also, absolutely beautiful playing!

Dear Mr. Oft, I watched a video of you doing lip slurs (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKa8dKGsltGbnNk) and noticed a lot of movement in your chops between different partials., whereas here there is very little. I've been taught to stabilize the embouchure throughout the horn. What's your opinion on the subject? Is this more of a personal thing from player to player or do you find that movement is typically more successful? Or is it more situational in when you would adjust your embouchure. Thank you very much for your videos and time, Noah

Fidencio Oviedo-it's fine to have an opinion, but considering the relative skill levels of you two, it was incredibly rude and presumptuous of you to phrase your thought as a criticism. I have worked with Toby. He plays everything exactly the way he wants to, because that's how skilled he is. NOBODY in high school should embarrass themselves as badly as you did here. At the very least, you should have not phrased your criticism as a definitive judgement of how the piece should have been played, placing your musical judgement above that of this supreme artist. You should be so fortunate as to ever be 1/1000th player Toby is-and with your undeserved sense of superiority, even that will never happen. Grow up, kid.

Connor Krakosky Don’t act like Toby didn’t have a good point when he asked that question. Fidencio said that he was a freshman in high school. Toby is the principal trombone of the BSO , someone who has been through the brutal audition process to win the job. Fidencio was just adding his thoughts about the interpretation but the way he presented it, he made it seem like his opinion was irrefutable.
