Good stuff, James. Thanks for sharing this. That has a nice final fitment which is so well done the separation between the two parts just disappears. Good job!

Great video, as always! I'm in the middle of a similar project. While I have several shaper keyway bars, I recently acquired a Tree tapered boring head...but it didn't include the original boring bars, so I'm making them. Cutting the 1/4" squares through the bar, might be the most challenging part.....

Great job. Some of my old tooling had a cap type tool bit holding with wrench Armstrong to I think. Been awhile tho. I made my own tool post mount for two or three sizes of boring bars back in the 70s.copied there round one for the lathe. I know its not the same as the shaper but essentially it is. Thank for the video

Hi James. Nice idea the different size interchangeable square tool bit holders for speed. If you'd left the larger diameter section on between the two smaller ones the shoulder would have acted as a thrust ring up against the tool holder face. Enjoyed the machining process, something else to make. Tony

With the number of times I saw the word USA jumping back and forth across my screen (it's stamped on your tool holder), I thought I was watching a Keith Fenner video! :)

looks good but i think i would have milled a flat on the counterbore section of the tool holder and put a set screw in the bar to secure the tool holder.

I have been trying to score some square broaches on E-Bay for awhile now. No deals yet.They always go for big money.

Yep, would not have purchased one just for this project. Little ones like this .25" still go for over a C note

I don't bother with square holes. Just take the size of the square tool bit and multiply that by the square root of 2 and drill THAT size and you're done. It is just as stable and I'd say even MORE stable than a square hole. 1/4" bit needs a .3535 min hole.

Nice bar, but aren't you worried about it unscrewing itself in a cut? With my luck, it would right on the last cut.
@jtkilroy
@jtkilroy 4 жыл бұрын
That is a valid concern, but a little blue loctite and a firm turn, there is not much to worry about.

Maybe I missed it but, what kind of steel did you make the boring bar from?
@jtkilroy

1177 Stress Proof. That is pretty much my go to alloy for steel projects in sizes under 2"

@@jtkilroy Great Video, James... Is that correct, you use 1177? I know of 1144 but I can't find much on 1177 stress proof.

Boring intro - could you really not speak and think more slowly?? Try harder. Plan your script and rehearse reading it. All that stuff about 15/16" bars was uninteresting. Two out of ten for the intro.
