Very brave man. Rhod has been undergoing treatment for cancer for the last year and ironically had treatment at a cancer centre which he did a large amount of fundraising for. I believe he has started to perform again though recently.

The lady who got burnt was pretty much publically dragged by McDonalds lawyers in an attempt to discredit her. The temperature of the coffee was exceedingly hot and not a sensible way to serve it. She did win.
@Nick_C1997
@Nick_C1997 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, the coffee was so hot it would be legally considered a hazard. There were over 700 cases of people complaining to McDonalds about the coffee too hot, but McDonalds didn’t care, even after the courts said they had to reduce the temperature of their coffee, they didn’t That woman suffered third degree burns and needed skin graft treatment because McDonalds served their coffee at 190 degrees, she nearly died!
@SarthorS
@SarthorS 2 ай бұрын
@@Nick_C1997 Not 700 cases of people complaining. But over 500 lawsuits from those who had been hospitalised and even permanently disfigured. This had been going on for years with McD's refusing to serve their coffee at a more sensible temperature. The woman originally asked them to just cover half of her medical bills which were something like $40k. I think McD's offered her a few hundred. It was the judge that bumped the award up into the millions to send a message to McD's. McD's lawyers argued that absolutely scalding coffee tasted better. The womans lawyer made the more sensible argument that people would have to wait for the coffee to cool down to the point it was drinkable, and so would get fewer free refills.

Rhod Gilbert is a master of 'angry rant' comedy. Other good clips to check out are 'Luggage', 'Egg and Cress Sandwich', 'Duvet', 'Toothbrush' and 'Torch (flashlight) with the power of a million candles'. But the one that NO ONE talks about is his rant about a cafe/restaurant called Red Hen. The 'Red Hen' video is one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life and actually made me cry with laughter.

Rhod (pronounced Rod) is short for Rhodri - a Welsh name. He’s extraordinarily shy off stage and such a lovely guy. When you go to see his live shows, he leaves mystery prizes for random ticket holders but tells people in advance to collect these at the box office as he doesn’t want people to feel embarrassed or nervous thinking they’re going to be dragged up on stage later in the show😅

I know you probably won't see this but I just wanted to give some info about the woman who sued McDonalds that you were talking about. She admitted that it was her fault the coffee spilled, what she was suing about was that the coffee caused third degree burns on her thighs and genitals; she wasn't sue because she wasn't told the coffee was hot, she was suing because McDonalds' was serving coffee so hot that it was basically a safety hazard and she only took enough money to cover her medical bills (it became a class action lawsuit at 300 people also got similar burns). The reason why people think because she claimed she 'didn't know hot coffee was hot' was McDonalds' lawyers had a good smear campaign.

Rhod Gilbert is a very funny comedian, always has me in tears laughing. When he first became famous across the UK his style was always him ranting about some ludicrous situation hilariously. This show is one where he came out and tried to convince everyone he had been having Anger Management classes, hence his anger management diary, which he "reads" from. Several VERY funny stories based on this, you should look at more

Couple of pieces of context. As people have said, he is referring to large potatoes, suitable for baking, so he is buying raw uncooked potatoes. Tesco is a large supermarket chain, but ‘Tesco Metro’ is a small, scaled down version, often found on a high street or at a Gas station, more the size of a convenience store,with fewer goods and they obviously don’t sell loose potatoes, just a pre packed version sold in a pair. Also, when he mentioned ‘loose potatoes’ and the potatoes sitting round chatting, he was making a joke about a show called ‘Loose Women’ which I guess is similar the ‘The View’

Ok, so here's the context: This is part of a big bit in the show about him attending anger management. That's why he starts out reading from the piece of paper, which is supposed to be an anger management control plan. He's supposed to write down incidents where his anger got out of control and how he dealt with it. Oh, and ps. In English, he's just called Rod, like the short form of Rodney. Rhod is a Welsh name and in the Welsh language, the Rh makes a specific sound that doesn't exist in English; You noticed that he rolls his r's, the rh-sound is like that but without using the voice at the same time, so kind of like the difference between Z and S, where R is more like Z and S is more like Rh. I hope that makes sense to the English teacher at least :) Anyway, just to reiterate, it's just pronounced Rod in English.

Macdonald's coffee being that hot is actually an issue. Should never make coffee above 80°C, ruins the flavour apparently. Also, on occasion, burns you to the point it fuses your clothing to your leg if you spill it, but we all know the real issue is the flavour

Rhod is an exceptional story teller, when he can easily point out the absurdities of modern living, and the every day frustrations. His full show is a laughter roller coaster from start to finish, when you mentioned rolling his “R’s”, it’s quite a Celtic trait most easily heard in Wales and, Scotland and Ireland. I do enjoy your reactions , as your more and more introduced into British humour, a lot of which is grounded in sarcasm.

In the UK we can buy regular raw potatoes, and the supermarkets also sell much larger raw potatoes specifically for making into baked potatoes, which are sold as ‘baking potatoes’. I think he was talking about raw potatoes rather than pre-cooked potatoes, as these ‘baking potatoes’ are normally sold in packs of 2 or 4.

The woman who sued for the hot coffee is one of the most misunderstood stories. She was a 79 year old woman who was driven to McDonald's by her grandson. She was in a parked car when she spilt the coffee on her lap. The coffee was at near boiling point and it gave her third degree burns on her legs and genitals. She went into shock and nearly died. She needed painful skin grafts and her surgeon said it was the worst he'd seen. She admitted that the spill was her fault, but believed that the coffee was too hot. She didn't want to sue and all she wanted was for McDonald's to help with her $20,000 out of pocket expenses, but they only offered her $800. McDonald knew that the temperature they sold the coffee at was hazardous as the previous year they had 700 complaints from other people who had received burns from it. She tried mediation with McDonald's, but they weren't having any of it so her only option was to sue. It was the court that decided on the enormous payout and it pressured McDonald's into reducing the temperature and stop burning people. This was a case of a working class person taking on a big corporation and winning. The reason why people think this is frivolous is because of a massive disinformation campaign by the corporate lawyers, including lying about the fact that she was driving when it happened. The major corporations funded fake protests against an "epidemic" of frivolous lawsuits and the media fell for it hook, line, and sinker. As a person from the UK, I love to make fun of the american suing culture, but it's simply not based in reality. The average lawsuit is settled for $55,000 and most of them are justified. It's not all about putting labels on vacuum cleaners saying "not for rectal use". I learnt this from "Adam Ruins Everything" by the way. It's well worth a look if you aren't already aware of the programme. It comically challenges many myths and misconceptions.
