Go down the Metallica rabbit hole! Over 40 years of music to catch up on. They have been my favorite band since about 1985 when I first heard them! They just dropped a new album in April. As an old school Metallica fan I’m loving that they still got it in them to not only create new music but still sound superb live! Long may they reign! James hetfield is not only the singer and one of the guitarist he also writes the lyrics. He writes in a way that is personal to him yet can be interpreted by the listener to their own lives. This album is the first metal album to be placed in the library of congress for its cultural and musical significance!!!! Keep the Metallica reactions coming!!!!!

The thing I love about this song (other than the fact it is a total BANGER) is the layers of meaning that are built into it. The song is about drug addiction and is written for the majority of the song from the perspective of the drug. The drug is gloating about becoming the person's master and helping them on their way to death. The drug is the Master of Puppets, making the addict it's puppet. This was beautifully illustrated in the cover art where you see the puppet strings connected to all of the graves on the ground. Then to show the artistry of the musicians the music is written to follow the cycle of drug addiction. The first part represents the addict craving the drug and the drug taunting him. The middle piece represents the addict taking the drug and the euphoric dream like state when you hear that amazing guitar solo that almost feels like a dream. Then you can hear the drug wearing off and begin to go back to the chaotic frame of mind as the addict is wanting more. This song is a masterpiece on so many levels!!!!

awesome reaction. I love getting to see someone listen to this stuff for the first time. I was blown away by this song the first time I heard it. My list: 1) tie - MOP / One. One was the first Metallica song I ever heard, and instantly, that was my favorite song. And that was in 88, when it got radio play. Then, I heard MOP a few years later, and I couldn't get enough of it. My favorite is whichever one I'm listening to at the time. 3) Ride the Lightning - the top 2 are clear cut, but I like Lightning more the more I listen to it, and I've listened to it a lot. 4) Fade to Black - I mean. Amazing song. For 99% of the bands in history, this would be easily their greatest song. 5) Disposable Heroes After that, it's Fight Fire w Fire, Orion, Leper Messiah, Creeping Death, Blackened, Four Horsemen, Battery, Damage Inc, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Dyer's Eve, No Remorse, Sad But True, Unforgiven, No Leaf Clover, Call of Ktulu, Don't Tread on Me...all changing the order along the way. If you include live performances, I'd add Harvester of Sorrow, The thing that should not be, and Sanitarium to that list, much better live, IMO, than studio versions of those songs.

Not only that. It was all done by young people at that time, James was like 20-21 years old when Ride the Lightning came out, Cliff Burton did most of the songs on that Album too (but unfortunatelly he died in a car accident during the tour)... And if you listen to master of Puppets & Ride the Lightning - think of... drugs. As those songs are about them and influence that they have on lives (and James was quite open about it too). Again, amazing that it was all done by a very youg people at that time.

It's the best Metallica song ever... or at least top 3. I know everyone has their own opinions, but as a Metallica fan since 1981, and I can say from Ride the Lightning ..And Justice For All, Master of Puppets it's one of the finest songs, ever in metal.

God people keep going into the meaning of the song. Forget that, just revel in the fact this was Metallica in the genius years where they were angry and hated the world.

Leper Messiah. That song is soo underrated. Awesome base riff, but that whole breakdown section, prior to and after the solo...it's amongst my favorite Metallica jams in all of their songs. Not quite as powerful as One's amazing breakdown /outro, or as epic as MOP, or quite as awesome as Lightning. But, it's right up there.
