I’m glad they added the footage of Shoaib Akhtar against Brian Lara. Shoaib actually wrote about that in his book, he even made Lara sign the same ball afterwards. He described it as a big moment in his career because Lara was the best cricket had at that time while Akhtar was still making a name for himself.

Now imagine, before 1972, they played without helmets..Now a days there are restrictions to the number of bouncers a bowler could bowl, which is 2 per over, but prior to this they could bowl 6 bouncers in a 6 ball over.. Bouncers are there to test the nerve and skill of the batsmen and set him up for yorker or a full pitched delivery with him expecting another bouncer, therefor playing it on the back foot. If the ball stays straight he likely to be trapped LBW or if it jags away it is likely to find the edge of his bat for a catch in the slips cordon. Another video that needs to be sent to you should inform you of the various fielding positions with their peculiar names...as also why they are likely to be used...the kind of bowler and the tendencey of a batsman to play a particular shot..

@@BoringReviews There is a fielding position called 'silly point'. Basically u stand 5 yards away from the batsman, in his main strike zone. Very dangerous if the batsman hits u as it is point blank range with no time to react.

Back in the 70s and 80s, it must have been terrifying playing against the West Indies. Check out this article about England’s tour of the West Indies in 1986. The first match at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica was described as “cricket’s equivalent of the Somme”. It’s a long article, so if you don’t want to read it just look at the picture of Mike Gatting. He got that injury off a Malcolm Marshall bouncer in a one day match before the Test series started, so he missed the series as he had to fly home for surgery. There were a couple of well known incidents missing from this compilation, which you can research and look at off camera. Malcolm Marshall vs Mike Gatting (where did it hit you ?), and when Courtney Walsh broke Robin Smith's jaw, and Robin Smith just smiled. This was back in the day when helmets weren't compulsory, and Robin Smith refused to wear a full face helmet because he said he got a rush from facing fast bouncers. Sadly, this bravado was neither big or clever, and thankfully there are more compulsory safety measures are in place now, but still not enough. RIP Phillip Hughes :'(

India managed to lift the world cup after 20+ years, he played a major role in that. I remember that moment where Indian players carried him in their shoulders.

What this shows is that Brett Lees (Australia) bowled the nastiest bouncers in the modern era. He is in this video several times. He bowled 150-160 km hour (95-100 mph for USA readers) and his bouncers were very accurate.

Before the 70' s Batters didn't wear any protective gear except for leg pads, batting gloves and a box. Mainly it was terry toweling hats or baggy caps for their heads. Result - many broken bones and bruised bodies. Jeff Thompson (Thommo) a terrifying exponent of fast bowling once stated that those hats were only for mopping up blood. Brutal.

Working through some old video here. Just wanted to point out that all of these batsmen were wearing helmets. It wasn't too long ago (as far as the history of cricket is concerned) that helmets either weren't available or seldom worn. Batsmen had to learn to avoid the ball by moving their body out of the way, you'll see nearly all of these players either stood there and turned their back on the ball or tried to duck under it. Much like the introduction of hard shelled helmets in American football resulted in players using the helmet as a weapon, cricketers now rely on the helmet for all of their protection instead of it being additional protection.

As an old opening batsman this brings back memories of being hit a few times....much tougher game than many would think. I got more bruises/broken bones than playing Aussie Rules Football. I have seen a number of nasty injuries to fellow players including broken teeth.

Just to clarify, those clips were taken over a large No of years and the older clips were the clips where vision was low RES. In cricket there has only been one KNOWN death. He was a professional player. Bouncers arent meant to hit but sometimes they do. A batsman with good technique will know how to score runs from and how to avoid a bouncer. But again accidents do happen sadly.

I've always said the major difference between cricket and baseball is the bounce. It gives bowlers (Cricket pitchers) so much more variation/options, and the batsman so much more uncertainty. This is exacerbated by the state of the pitch especially a few days into the long form of the game and cracks from weather

You got it guys.Cricket is about defending yourself and your wicket first,then you think about getting runs(20/20 less so obvs, that's about quick runs).That's why you need all the protective gear.You are hopefully out there longer than a baseball at bat, so you will probably end up getting hit. Take a look at Michael Holding bowling to Brian Close in 1976. No blood, but scary enough as just a cloth cap between skull and ball!

Obstructing the vision would be more dangerous. These injuries are reasonably rare. The best way to dodge quick bouncers is to keep your wyes on the ball the same as dodging a punch in boxing you wouldnt want to blur the vision

Cricket is a sport of great extremes, probably more than any other sport. It could be day 3 of a test match on a flat pitch when everything seems so mundane that time seems to stop and even the players are yawning...but you could suffer life changing injuries while batting, bowling or fielding. - Batsmen getting knocked out, concussed, faces smashed, toes broken has happened a lot. Batsmen also run extremely fast sprints while taking quick runs; try doing that in full gear in 40 degrees heat after spending 3 hours on the ground. - Getting hit on the nut sack by a rock hard ball hurtling along at 145 kmph is a routine occurrence - Bowlers breaking their ankles, stress fractures because of sprinting in, jumping and throwing using a round arm action with great accuracy..all at the same time -Close in fielders getting smashed every now and then. Fielders picking up serious injuries while diving in the outfield, even colliding with another fielder and breaking noses and knees. I know of atleast 2 wicketkeepers whose careers ended after the ball or the bails damaged their eyes.
