Boris Report leaked; "Boris really has adopted a disgracefully cavalier attitude to his classical studies. [He] sometimes seems affronted when criticised for what amounts to a gross failure of responsibility (and surprised at the same time that he was not appointed Captain of the school for the next half). "I think he honestly believes that it is churlish of us not to regard him as an exception, one who should be free of the network of obligation that binds everyone else." Eton when he was 17.

I can't quite get my head into the idea that some people actually think that Sunak is 'much more competent'. I see no evidence of that. With the exception of about half a day of the Windsor Framework stuff, his leadership of the country has been awful. I see him as a liability. I go on results (his ridiculously vacuous pledges and the failing of just about everything). And he's a charmless robot! The country simply can't go on with these people at the helm for much longer. Thank goodness the evil Johnson is gone....hopefully Sunak, etc will be next.

I understand why people think he’s competent even though I generally agree with some of the thoughts expressed here. It’s political whiplash, or overcompensation. After a loud boisterous leader fails, a quiet and industrious leader seems more trustworthy. It was the same thing reversed with May - > Johnson. She was quietly working away at her task but Johnson convinced everyone that her lack of results was a sign of weakness. I would go so far as to hypothesise that Johnson was largely responsible for manufacturing this perception of May.

Nadine Dorres's seat of Mid Beds will have a by election. Labour are a fairly poor second and LibDems in 3rd. But it is a rural, small towns area and the LibDems have been canvassing it last weekend and believe they can come from 3rd and win the by election as they did in North Shropshire, which would require a smaller swing. Unlike in Shropshire, the LibDems won 8 out of 9 of the Central Bed council seats up for election in May.
