Stanley Johnson denied a knighthood, no doubt on nepotism gone silly reasons. Blair didn't do any resignation honours should be reminded to everyone much more often. 👍

Johnson has always made my skin crawl. So I've always been astounded that so many seemingly-intelligent people couldn't see that he was a complete sham - even my best friend told me he 'oozed with character'. I've never seen him as 'brilliant' in any way. I perused his Churchill book once in a book-remainder cafe (I wouldn't have bought it, or be seen borrowing it from a library) in London and was gob-smacked by how bad it was - as shallow and engaging as a dried-up puddle. The baseless adulation the man has received is really the phenomenon we should be examining. What does that show about the UK and so many of its vested interests and institutions, not just Eton.

It's a depressing and fascinating insight into the vestiges of our class system, and the way in which otherwise sensible people cower before it. God knows I hope it can signal the end of the whole sordid setup (though until we at least strip these public schools of charitable status that desire may be unfounded).

Hello Alistair, hello Rory, I strongly suggest you rethink and revisit the comments on the P2 loge of which SB was a member. At least Alistair is definitely old enough to remember the horrific bombing of the Bologna Rail Station with more than 180 victims. As I recall it, as a teenager at the time, it turned out to be the last straw in a long series of right wing political killings, bombings and assassinations in Italy, which finally forced the Italian authorities to crack down on the main organization core = the P2 loge. P2 turned out to be a neo facist organization that posed as a masonic loge, mainly to provide a respectable front for a large membership cadre of very high ranking DC, police, military, secret services, and industry leaders of Italy. And for most of them the facade was just strong enough to provide enough cover to avoid direct culpable implication in the P2 organized terror activities. The P2 leaders were convicted. But most high ranking members like SB escaped just with a slightly tarnished reputation. I found Alistair's comment regarding the Propaganda Due P2 singularly misplaced and regarding the many victems of P2 activities very disrespectful. For my part, I'm not a victim, nor am I concious of even knowing relations of any victim. But, I grew up in German in the times of the constant terror scares of the Rote Armee Fraction in Germany, the Action Direct in France, the Brigade Rosso in Italy, the IRA in the UK, ETA in Spain, and the PLO, PLAF, various other organizations linked to the Israel Palestine conflict. I remember seeing the evening news about Bologna, as a boy just shy of my 15th birthday.I remember my late father's immediate analysis: This was done by facsists, because it targeted indiscriminately the innocent, just to create terror. I hope to hear some form of retraction of your comments on P2 and maybe a reflective discussion on the deeper roots of todays antidemocratic post truth populist politicians in Europe. There is a long and steady extreem right wing support infrastructure tradition existing in many countries. P2 was an early high profile legitimizing front entity and perpetrator. SB, JM LePen, Jörg Haider, were the initial populist open rehabilitators of the shunned and disgraced facist thoughts. The personages that used the "It must be allowed to say..." free speech arguments to reestablish the unacceptable as part of now consistently accepted public and political discourse and biased or ignorant media "both sidesing". Best Regards, Dr. Axel Laistner

It is not the Scottish nationalist who are the separatists. It is the English/British Nationalists who took the entire UK, against the wishes of half of its member states, out of the EU to suffer in 3rd country isolation. Once again, the British are not a race, and the UK or Great Britain is not a country or a Nation. They are all political constructs hiding English taxation and rule over the rest of the UK. It makes no sense for Scotland to be outvoted 543 to 57 now in the House of Commons or be overruled by dozens of reserved devolution powers and a new Internal markets act by a foreign power next door we can not control. Not only does England disrespect Scotland, but you also threaten our very right to exist as you impose your will on the people of Scotland. England is the separatist movement, not Irish, Scottish or Welsh nationalists. We see your mistakes and will not pay taxes to you to fund them anymore as you attempt to weaken and break apart the EU at every turn. The more you attack our Scottish Government and its elected officials, the larger the vote for All Under One Banner will become at the next election.
