you either appreciate it or you don't. I don't think it's necessarily a hipster thing if you like this. I think it's honestly kinda pretentious to immediately dismiss this because of the lack of melody or whatever. Just accept there are people who love to be engulfed in a wall of uncompromising noise, something you just can't experience at home. That there is beauty, purity and a sense of catharsis derived from this crushing and monolithic sound. I wish I could have been there.

+Ryan Hoffman there is a slight difference between noise and music.  it would be normal if you had the ability to recognize that.
@ryanhoffman56548 жыл бұрын
MegaKronnik Yes there is: intent. These people sound like my grandma when I was a kid who said Slayer wasn't music, it was just noise lol
@MegaKronnik8 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Hoffman Just because two people say the same thing doesn't mean they are obliged to be mutually valid or invalid. Depending on the context, a particular statement could ring true or false. For example, saying the sky is blue, while standing on Mars, you're wrong. I am of the opinion that the grandma you refer to is dead wrong due to the presence of rhythm, melody, and actual song structure. However, to my point, the cacophony of sounds you'd hear in a forest are not music anymore than the shit that merzbow makes is music. With poetic license I could completely understand, and would myself, describe the sounds of birds and the wind in the trees as music, but I would at least have the sense to understand I am taking poetic license in that situation. Likewise with Merzbow. I personally don't mind or have an issue with anyone enjoying listening to the noises he creates, much like I'd find it absurd to criticize someone for enjoying the sounds of the forest. However, I will roll my eyes and disagree if someone were to insist that the birds, or merzbow, are dabbling in the creation of what is known the world over as 'music.' TL;DR the term noise exists for a reason. not all sounds are music.
@ryanhoffman56548 жыл бұрын
MegaKronnik Theres a difference between not liking it and calling it noise (in a seemingly derisive way). Hell even at universities they teach about and have composition classes for musique concrete, which has been around since the 30's...
@MegaKronnik8 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Hoffman - - - - I appreciate your ability to not let this devolve into a meathead slug fest on a youtube forum in spite of our disagreements and any snark i may have thrown out there, and I am glad to have come here because I did discover boris, who I will explore later as I'm able and in the mood. What would you say about John Cage's supposed composition entitled 4'33"? You can look it up on wikipedia if so inclined, but in essence it's 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence. I posit that it is not music. the 'composer' of this silence insists the actual "song" is composed of what the audience will hear in their environment during the aforementioned silence. I am completely on board with referring to this as some form of performance art, although nobody is actually actively performing anything. I will admit there is enough flexibility there in concept and definition to allow a passive type of performance within the arts, of any variety, not just audible formats. However, to call 4'33" of general silence a 'song' or a 'composition' or more broadly 'music' I find that quite misleading and factually incorrect. To get back to our original debate here, I feel 4'33" of essentially random white noise and static and arbitrary throbbing bass would be similarly received: it is sound (or lack thereof to encompass John Cage's piece), it is a performance, it is art, but I don't believe it is music. One could argue that the entire infinite expanse of the universe is a musician and is constantly producing music because our scientific instruments on earth can hear various anomalies. -------- Ok, just listend to Pierre Schaeffer's piece entitle "Apostrophe" here on youtube. It is admittedly easier to listen to for me, i.e. not as abrasive as merzbow, but I still wouldn't call that music. It is yet again a performance art piece that happens to use sound as it's medium. Would you call the 7-eleven logo a painting or visual work of art simply because you can see it? The color bars that used to appear on TV stations as they ended their nightly broadcast is no more a work of art than a business logo or (though I know a work of art could be used as a business logo, I admit this isn't the perfect analogy for the concept I am trying to convey, but I am sure you get what I'm driving at). Musique Concrete seems to me to be amazingly important to the modern creation of music as it appears on the surface to be some of the earliest examples of sampling I've ever encountered. I am grateful to have heard merzbow, boris, john cage, and pierre schaeffer at this point in my music listening life. I don't find any of it to be outright worthless or devoid of meaning. I simply have a hard time reconciling these types of things as music, or songs. Art? Absolutely. And some of it beautiful to behold.

Just absolutely DEVASTATING!!! Not only does the music have an avant garde feel to it but it forces your mind outside of the box. Once outside that box it throws on tons of compression and sound waves clipping which makes another small perimeter and those two push the sound away from each other like magnets repelling and all along staying in that space. Someone in the commentary makes the point regarding intent, which by itself is maybe insufficient. This style is tricky to pull off convincingly under the best of circumstances; there's NO shortage of examples of how to do it poorly, so maybe the best to be hoped for is NOT to do it badly and see if and where it lands. Best case scenario, you might end up with a hybrid. -The Boris/Merzbow hook-up is a fine case in point.

He's been doing experimental/noise music since 1980, it's not a new thing. Nobody is making noise music to make money or be famous, I can assure you of that. I honestly don't think most hipsters even know/care about noise. If you don't like it go listen to something you enjoy and stop moaning.
@MegaKronnik8 жыл бұрын
man this is terrible, though it's an amazing tool to use against telemarketers. I string them along through the robo part of the call, and once a human gets on there I keep talking with them and slowly turn the volume up until all they hear is me mumbling and this shit pouring into their ears. I can barely tolerate it (have it paused while I write this actually), and I'm the one pressing Play, can't imagine they enjoy it any more. so, thank you for making these sounds as far as that goes.but yeah, terrible music. waste of talent, in my not so humble opinion. I'm sure they are all great people and good musicians (technically speaking), but as far as this goes? this composition? this particular genre? it's terrible. it makes me feel old. I do, however, take comfort in knowing that it's a small, small, super fucking tiny segment of the population that can actually call this music without rolling their eyes or smirking, so there's that.
