The biggest thing that sets this game apart from other games is that you aren't working toward your own comfort and achievements, but you're working to set up a life for another player coming after you. Everywhere else, you are playing to be better, stronger, with better technology, because you know it will help you, but here you do it to help someone else.

Arguably, it's a bit of both. Starting out, your main focus is to survive. Once you are in a position where that is doable you work to continue surviving. If you don't, the odds of dying early go up. You work to make your survival easier for yourself and for your immediate loved ones, because you want comfort for yourself and them. You work to make things more comfortable so that your decendants will have an easier time after you, but also because there is a chance you'll be reborn. So, you want to set up the future to be an easy and comfortable one - not just for your descendants, but also for a potential future you.
@shinichigojir122 жыл бұрын
When Precious died, I thought wow, you moved on quickly, because it’s all about survival. So when Ma is about to die, and daughter asking to move South, i thought you would prioritize survival first. But you didn’t. You decided to stay with Ma. Such twists and turns. It’s like watching a movie with a redemption arc.

Its such a novel concept to me that you start the game off not only as a baby, but as another player's baby. Most life sim games would have you customize your character and live with other computers, but imagine instead that you enter this life and you inherit the genetics from your parents, and you need to be taken care of until you grow up. Its such a neat idea.
@Okk6812 жыл бұрын
I wish to see more games with this idea, it’s super interesting and makes some fun dynamics between players.
@Greyshi2 жыл бұрын
There are actually some games that do that, or at least allow for that. These are typically online creature survival games, such as The Isle, Beasts of Bermuda and Creatures of Sonaria, for example. The players there play as a dinosaur or a reptile or some kind of a monster and can hatch other players. The offspring will inherit the species, and, depending on the game, may also inherit the colors of the coat and maybe even some of the skill tree as bonus points.
@ghostwizard75972 жыл бұрын
Ok, how tf did the first players look like?
@nottechytutorials2 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking the idea could probably be an Adam and Eve deal, they held the genetic potential for the entire human race, so their children will all have a diverse range of appearances, until eventually you have identifiable distinct groups. One thing I would change about the game tho, or perhaps approach it differently in a different game, would be to not have the women randomly pop out babies. It seems really inconvenient.
@user-sf9gs2pg1b2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The cool thing is, this game can almost be anything because of how much freedom you have. It’s literally life. Like, I’ve always wanted a game where you can be the NPC merchant, blacksmith, etc., and the whole thing is 100% player economy and workers, and you can probably be a merchant in this game trading stuff. Really cool game.

I play Sky more than a year now. It can be quite tiring to farm game currency often and boring after you finish playing the main story and explore and do stuff, but I try to take small breaks when needed and come back to the game again. You can just goof around with friends, help new players, do random stuff with strangers and meet new people. Not to mention the graphics as someone already said above my comment. It is a great experience and I think you'll enjoy it!
@pimmylouspimmy13912 жыл бұрын
@@catea1._ I’ve been playing for 2 years now, and while it can be seen as tiring, I find it therapeutic. During busy times though I understand trying to find the time to farm will be stressful. This is for anyone who plays OHOL. For experienced players: how to handle new players. Rule of thumb is to be respectful and answer questions. If a player is lost or aimless, find an aspect of the village that is lacking and teach them there. If you don't know, ask someone else. Someone is bound to help. If push comes to shove, the wiki is a useful tool. For new players: this game can be intimidating; trust me, everyone's been where you are. If there is a plethora of options and you don't know what to do, I recommend starting with cooking, but go wherever you're needed. Ask specific questions. Follow others' lead. Some will be mean to new players, but most should be understanding. You got this. This game beautifully represents society in a way none else have. Keep that in mind when playing. It will be hard. But you can do it. I believe in you.

So many good moments, but nothing as good as what happened in the ending. The three generations all discuss their next move as a family; the granddaughter, born gifted with knowledge, pleads with the player and Ma to go South; the grandmother, knowing it’s too late for her, saying she’s fine where she is. Our player is split, but time forces them all to go their separate ways. We watch as Ma passes away, and as we dwell in the moment the sentimental music hits, and we are still with grief, alone. Soon the player, overcome with grief to the point where they did not pay attention to their own well being fast enough, dies alone in the wilderness. That was a whole movie in what, 30 seconds?

I come back to this video so often. As a mom whose parents died when I was young and only have extremely toxic family left it’s been hard to raise my daughter on my own but now seeing how supportive he was to his mom just GETS me every time. I feel guilty that she doesn’t have a lot of family but at the same I don’t because I wouldn’t want her in the environment that I was raised in. I hope she understands this well when she’s older. She was around 1 when this video first came out and now she’s 4, and I keep coming back to it. I know it’s just a game but still.

Reminds me of a train of thought Carl Sagan sent me down. "To make a pie from scratch, you first have to make the universe." So I started thinking about how unethical it would be and whether or not it would be worth it to create a whole universe, which will presumably develop sentient life who will suffer greatly for it, just to make a pie from scratch. Ultimately though, it's worth it. You can make it up to that sentient life by teaching them to make pie.

Kinda wish the sims had a online concept like this where a player can start out as another players child and just go through life. Maybe make each neighborhood a server and have other players as neighbors, if possible give it the open world treatment like the sims 3 and let player kids ride a school bus to school and stuff

I would really like a modern sims multiplayer like this. But when there were rumors of Sims 5 being multiplayer, most of the community seemed against it. I think what I would like best is worlds like we have now, for our own games. But destination worlds could be multiplayer/servers.

They're like "I didn't know what to do and was so lost" Yeah buddy, did you automatically know what to do irl when you were born? They're like "I die too early, so I can't experience the actual game" Yeah buddy, you just experienced the game by dying, just like some children die in *_real_* life. I think people misconstrue this as a game you're supposed to win, rather than a game you're supposed to experience. And I got this point from just 10 minutes of it.. soooo...

the learning curve on this game is crazy, i've played it a lot but had to spend hours with it and a wikipedia up to learn things and I still know almost nothing, i basically just make fire and eggs lol but you're totally right that's part of it and learning from other players is the most satisfying part of the game, when a player teaches you how to make what THEY know and are good at, it's very enriching. Lots of people do ditch it straight away for being too hard and that's ok, this game is more like a social experiment / art I think
