I replaced the 150 gallon tank in my old 1988 Mako 240 walk-around in 2020 before I sold it and it was a chore. It did have an access panel, which was very nice to have. I saved a ton doing it myself, but to anyone considering this task, I would say it's worth the cost of labor if you can afford it. I also rewired that boat myself and that was no fun either. I did learn alot about the boat though.

Recently I saw a video of a fisherman in Florida that paid $69,000 for the same make that was allegedly turn key. He stated while fishing he noted the smell of gas fumes....took it to the shop, same procedure....final cost to redo the deck and install the tank was approx $30,000

It's not going to save much, but you can buy a vented gas cap that connects to the through hull fitting with a hose and use the fill tube as the fuel tank vent as well. I have one on my boat and capped off the fuel vent hose coming from the fuel tank. Works perfectly. I also just ordered two captains chairs with adjustable pedestals and my 1998 Sea Pro 210 CC is restored with the following: 1. Brand New Yamaha 175 SHO VMax (Currently 4 Hours on the Engine) 2. Brand New Sea Star hydraulic steering 3. 2 Brand New VHF Marine Radios , one Console one Hand Held with GPS capability 4. Brand New Marine Antenna (forget the name, but the good one with Stainless Steel Mount) 5. Brand New Batteries (x2) 6. Brand New Perko battery selector 7. Brand New Bilge Pump 8. Brand New Live Well Pump 9. Brand new fuel lines 10 Brand New Vented Fuel Cap 11. Brand New Trailer Hubs, Tires, and Rims (x4) 12. Brand New Tongue Jack 13. Brand New Garmin 9 inch touch screen GPS Fish Finder and Transducer 14. Brand New AM/FM Radio with Bluetooth 15. Brand New Marine Speakers 16. Brand New Electric Trim Tabs 17. Brand New reed type Fuel Sender 18. Brand New Trailer Guides 19. Brand New Trailer Lights 20. Brand New Throttle Controller and Wiring 21. Brand New Trailer Bunks 22. Brand New Wash Down Pump 23. Brand New Wash Down Hose 24. Brand New Bait Cutting Tray (Rod Holder Mounted) 25. Restored (not brand new) Canvas T-Top Cover with Brand New lacing line 26. Brand New Fish Net 27. Brand New Casting Net 28. Various Brand New Rods and Reels with Brand New Fishing Line (x4) 28 Brand New Navigation Lights The only thing I'm considering adding now is a Brand New 72 Inch Minn Kota 110 pound thrust Salt Water Series trolling motor with 2 Brand New batteries. The marina quoted me a price of $7,200 installed. They must think I'm made out of money.

I wish my project was this efficient and cheap. I bought a 1999 26ft world cat a few months ago. The previous owner had filled the hulls with 2 part foam. The boat could not drain properly and would hold water. Been going through the boat for 3 months and keep finding new spots where foam is soaked with salt water. Stress fractures and other fiberglass issues. I am located on Oahu Hawaii and the price of everything here is through the roof. I appreciate these videos because I get to see what should be charged for certain jobs and how they should be done.

Literally doing all this right now to a 1998 Proline 2700. Had no idea the tank was bad before I bought the boat. Lesson learned.

You forgot one of the most important aspects of the tank replacement - the tank coating. I recently uncovered the tank of a 30 year old 22' Mako. Because the tank was both coated and foamed in, the tank was in excellent condition. I cleaned, recoated and foamed it in again. Also added new hoses and fittings. Now the 30 year old tank has a new life. The coating is the most important factor in the long life of a tank.

There were no poly tank options for my boat, reason:dimensions. Had a 33 gallon belly tank fab'ed by a local Puget Sound boat builder Peterzelka bros, it is top notch, heavy gauge and no not cheap! And I've heard that coal tar epoxy is a great coating for aluminum tanks

If the tank is bad and deck is soft a lot of time the transom is usually bad also. Especially on Parker’s and Grady whites

this is a great eye opener video for people who arent familiar with how boats are built and how crazy expensive it is to have to cut the floor out in some boats. I would probably esuggest using poly tanks instead of aluminum especially in saltwater environments, itll never corrode and the newer tanks are super strong unlike older versions which would degrade over time.

I've changed my fuel tank. I ordered 4 mm marine grade aluminium. It was 64 gallons cost 831dollar . complete with fittings ,hosees , primer and paint it ,total cost 1.011dollar excluding my time to fit it again on the boat

Very interesting video thank you so much for making it. The one thing I don't understand about the labor is say you were lucky that the tank did come out in 30 minutes BUT the mechanics book says it's a 2.5 hour job he/ she is still going to charge you the 2.5 hours even though reality it took him/ her only 30 minutes. To me that's not right it's stealing. Thanks for posting this video, enjoyed it.

My 260C Sea Ox has a bad forward tank. Luckily, the rear tank is newish and we only use the boat as a family day boat on inland waters. One day I’ll have to replace the forward tank, but it can wait until I need to get into that area for other reasons.

What’s your take on a going with a cross-linked polyethylene tank and the cost instead of going with aluminum again and having poultice corrosion rear it’s head after you put that tank back in and moisture gets in between the tank and the foam?
@jeffcarter81602 жыл бұрын
For me I found it best to go back to aluminum.
@BuckcreekTV2 жыл бұрын
If it is truly crosslinked you should have minimal issues with ethanol fuel. The only thing is it may not have baffles to help keep fuel from sloshing so probably best for 50 gallons or less.

Oh crap I hope my fuel tank doesn't go under the CC. I thought I could get to it by just removing the seatting deck section. Also from what I can see my tank is not foamed in. It's 1996 Bayliner trophy. Did they foam in the tanks back then? If so I'm betting this fuel tank was either replaced or something was repaired requiring them to remove the foam to get the tank out.

I wouldn't put that bare aluminum tank back in that boat. Epoxy paint it then take it to the spray in bedliner guy and spray that whole tank in LineX bedliner spray. Then the only way that tank will rot is from within. It will totally be protected on the outside foreverrr.

The cost of these repairs is pretty steep but no where near what used boats are selling for.you show examples that are down right ludicrous-and right now it’s beyond insane.30+ yr old boats heading toward $50k-when 2 yrs ago that same boat would be maybe $10k on a good day.Absolute insanity in the boat industry for the last 1.5 yrs and I feel bad for people who are falling into it.I for one-will NOT! I know what the market was and the bottom will fall out-those who paid 40-50% more than they are worth are gonna be way upside down and that’s gonna hurt…

Had a former friend learn that one in my shed, trying to DIY it on an 18 foot twin console. Bad tank, opened it up, bad foam, cut the bad foam out, bad stringers, while you’re in there, may as well redo the wiring and power steering lines and refresh the inboard, and if you’re doing that much mechanical work, you may as well redo all the upholstery and refinish the hull. He was diligently spending 6 hours per Saturday on it for the first 6 months or so, learning to do each thing and giving it a college try. By that point, he’d had the hull down to bare glass, he’d re-built the wood structure, reformed the hull, replaced the tank, replaced all the pumps and hoses and such, but broke off half his manifold studs in the block, and the motor was kicking his ass. He started finding excuses as to why he couldn’t be over that week to work on the boat. It’s too cold, I’ve got a family commitment, the new Zelda just came out, etc etc. I got sick of it by May and told him he had until August to get it finished or I was packing it all up in a tarp and dumping it on his lawn. I got a buddy who knew marine motors to fix his 302 for parts and beer, and bullied his wife into making him come over on week nights and he got it back on the water just in time for July 4th. It looked as good as new and performed better than it had ever performed (cutting close to 2thousand pounds of fuel and waterlogged foam out will do that). He brought me out for the inaugural ride, and we’ve barely spoken since. That was 2007? Paying to the the job would have been 12-15Gs in money he just didn’t have, but I’m sure his parts bill was at least 4, and it chewed on him for over a year, if you count it beating him up mentally in his 5 month project hiatus, never mind what it did for our respect and friendship.
