The new Yamaha F25 doesn’t require muffs or you to even start the engine to flush it out, you just simple plug the hose into the side and let it run 15 minutes. Love it 🙌🏻

I agree. I have one myself and Yamaha’s website states you don’t have to use the muffs anymore. Of course I have a friend that says that doesn’t get all the components on lower unit (the rubber pump/fins etc) so a video showing how the direct garden hose connection works would be awesome. Nice work. I’m now inspired to service my lower unit asap. Thanks 👍

Thanks for this thorough explanation. Best boating channel!! We have insects for instance Mason bees that like to plug the exit port with mud and their eggs so that’s another thing to look for. My Yamaha 150 doesn’t like peeing with muffs, only in a tank, whereas my 9.9 pees fine with muffs 🤷🏼

I have started putting mine in a tub filled with water. The water hose just fills the tub. Works so much better.

I just ran into that problem last week after getting a new water pump installed. Worked on muffs before I had the pump replaced but after it wouldn't pee until I hooked the hose to the flush port, filled it with water, and then when I put the muffs on it peed. Was like priming a pump. I'll just find a tank to fill with water and run my Salt Away through that. I normally replaced the water pump myself but having back issues that will require surgery in 3 weeks. Great video and explained a lot!

Nice explanation of how the impeller works. I use muffs that have a rectangle shape that matches the intake and not that round shape which doesn't seal well and leaks. Never had a problem on my 90 Yamaha 2 stroke getting enough water pressure or volume in there. As yes the tell-tale gets build up in (salt, mud, sand, etc) so I run a wire up there to clean it out occasionally. I think 16 or maybe 14 gauge 12v wire is the perfect size to fit the hole without removing the hose clamps under the engine cover. In fact I keep an 18" section of wire on the boat for this very purpose as I've had it get clogged up while out fishing.

I have an older Suzuki 2 stroke. It will not work on the rectangular ones. Works fine on the OG round ones. The manual says to also place tape over the water inlet/outlet near the torque tab. I also purchased a 100+ gallon plastic water trough from Tractor Supply which allows me to completely submerge my lower unit. The neighbors appreciate it as it’s much quieter.
@jamiesawyer51029 күн бұрын
That is great explanation as I have a 40 HP Yamaha and it doesn't pee on the muffs, now I know why.
@SandmannOZ5 күн бұрын
It's also worth jamming a stick or something similar up the telltale outlet whenever it's not in use to prevent insects nesting in it and blocking it. Doesn't need to be a tight fit, just enough to fill the hole.
@crispernator9 күн бұрын
Gday mate i put a small clamp with groves filed into it onto the wire of the muffs and push them on really tight when flushing after use ,if im just running up the motor i use a mini colapsable bath tub over the cav plate and run it that way i have a 40la hp yamaha 4 stroke model

For whatever it's worth: I never have any issues on my OMC's; on my Yamaha, it's another story. I've gone to a muff that feeds from both sides, turn on the water, tilt the motor all the way up and leave it there for a minute or so to "prime" it...then start the motor with a good stream - usually!

I have a through pin type muff for my Merc 150. It holds super tight and I get a normal stream.

I had to make a Y splitter to put a hose to the muffs and another hose to the flush or my yamaha f200 would overheat. Even with a brand new impeller
@tm87479 күн бұрын
i would not put the little piece on the end of the descharge wtaer flow, i would leave the little cap off. this way it has more clear flow of discharged water flowing out then a pencil stream.

Yamaha 2 stroke 50 HP TLR, here; doesn't pee on either box or circular muffs, new water pump etc. Pees like a champ in a rubber tank, though.

I never really trusted the muffs to do the job of flushing. Got a collapsible rain barrel on Amazon for about $60.00. Feel better knowing the water pump is completely submerged like it is when in the water.

I had tried using the "thumb pressed against the tell-tale" trick to build up enough pressure in the power head. One year this worked. The following year this didn't work; I had to replace the impeller because 2 of the blades of the impeller had broken off. Oh well...

Lol with 2 missing blades I'm surprised it peed at all lol

I have a yamaha f300 that I can't get to pee on muffs. My understanding is that this motor is particularly difficult. I am able to get it to pee if i feed water from both the muffs and the flush port in parallel.
@boomereaux9 күн бұрын
I had same issue with my f300. Bought a Rubbermaid tub from tractor supply. Solved!
@ronk33329 күн бұрын
@@boomereaux Yes, I also use a Rubbermaid stock tank to flush my motor. However, I use the muffs/flush port combo when performing a salt away treatment. Mixing salt away into a 100 gallons of water in a stock tank is just too diluted.
@julianspringer18357 күн бұрын
The housing is eccentric. There is more volume on the suction side than the pressure side. If the impeller is no longer flexible you will not get the pressure.

On muff my df140 when first start . But slow down a lot after thermostat open uo, is that normal?
@BornAgainBoating8 күн бұрын
Yes because you are loosing volume when the thermostat opens up because it's dumping water into the exhaust

If you see this I was wondering (free advice seeker, sorry!). My 25 Yamaha pees about half of prior Tohatsu 20. Very big difference?? Anyway your content has encouraged me - small service only but done it 👍 thank you
@BornAgainBoating8 күн бұрын
Yeah, Yamaha's aren't known for having a really strong tell tale like other engines, so as long as it's peeing in a normal steady stream, you should be fine
@wallace-bv4rl8 күн бұрын
Thank you! You’re video just out Yam 25 is also really useful. I didn’t even know where the thermostat was let alone that it could get gummed up. AND that grease point on the leg - thought that was an earth or something due to the wee wire! Best regards from Scotland. In remote spots here if you don’t do it yourself it’s difficult to get it done at all. Without towing a hundred miles which brings a whole other set of issues. Thank you
@mwiltfang461810 күн бұрын
If any of that grease you have on the back side of the impeller plate gets on the wiping ends of the impeller blades, it will definitely affect the efficiency of the water pump.
@ThatTexanCollector9 күн бұрын
I just put my motor in a trash can of water so the whole lower unit is submerged and it pees strong
@trackie19579 күн бұрын
In regular use, the pressure at the inlet is what, 12” of water? That’s just a bit more than zero. Even a leaky muff attached to a hose that has 20 psi behind it will do better than that. So, no. You explained how the impeller pump works, but not why it doesn’t work when being fed with a hose.

LAKE/OCEAN WATER LEVEL MUST BE ABOVE PUMP, IT DOESNT SUCK JUST BLOWS 😂....What I've Noticed in these type pumps is "THE PUMP HOUSING SHAFT HOLE IS OFF CENTER ~ CAUSING THE IMPELLER BLADES TO BEND MORE ON THE NARROWer SIDE CAUSING A HIGHER PRESSURE (less area between blades) FORCING Throwing THE WATER UP^ " 🤮
@whatsupshittafabraans19265 күн бұрын
The impeller operates epileptic miss match to the shaft centre, that’s how suck & pump works, the outer wall of the impeller housing is not concentric to the shaft, dude, research before making yourself a goose.
