You should do a comparison video of, Carbon Core, Sea Cast, Coosa, Star board (plastic version of plywood), foam core with layer of S.S or Aluminum, versus the tradition marine grade 3/4" plywood.

My last fiberglass boat had a radiused composite transom, self bailing deck, and full foam flotation. Sounds like a Whaler, right. Same heritage. Same handling characteristics. bare hull. roll edge. commercial duty. low h.p. requirements. shallow draft. dry and stable. I built a pilot house for it and rigged it out myself. It was my inlet/striped bass boat in the north east. Maritime makes a great Skiff you can build on. I had the 2090. It's fishing for crab off the Olympic Peninsula now and has been fished in Alaska.🙂

Cut and gut. Been there, done that. Tahitian mahogany, fiberglass and lots and lots of goo (resin/hardener). Engines sure have become more complicated... Ours had only five connections: Steering arm, gasoline, electrical positive and negative going to the battery, the starter wire and the ignition wire. All ship's systems were taken off the battery harness. The speedometer pitot was a separate thin, black plastic tube up to the dash.

Replacing the transom? After a close look at how extensive that damage is, I would consider replacing the rest of boat too! Haha. I admire your optimism, lol. And courage to tackle a tough project. Thanks for posting, your detail and throwing in the little tips about technique, etc are actually extremely helpful. Im working on a nice CC 38 Constellation now, have a 2 page "to do" list, currently remounting the teak swim platform. Its been hit or miss when ordering hardware/parts. Also would like to fix the trim tabs, which are frozen in place. She planes off nicely now as they sit. (Did last summer anyway), but would be cool if they worked. A lot of 12V electronics in need of repair. Most everything that runs on 120 shore power or generator works fine. (I suppose cause it didnt get used as often). I'll be watching for more tips. 👍

So, in a quick need of a boat, we put the transom on it in one weekend and then stuck it straight in the water so we would have a boat lol we call it the whack and pack, nothing works but the engine, the lights, and the GPS lol :) So once this boat is done we'll pull that out and fix up the wiring and what not. Haven't decided yet. Marine plywood is about $100 for a 4 X 8 sheet and the Coosa board is about $250 a sheet. So it's between $200 and $500. To be honest, I'm leaning toward the wood, because I will be the one rigging it, I'll seal up all the holes drilled and it will be good for 30 years. So, I'm still undecided lol maybe I should run a poll on the channel and see what everybody thinks?

Ive got a 22ft Sea Hunt BX 22 with a 250 yamaha 4 stroke. Its got electric trim tabs and they are a life saver any time you are running into a head sea or when you want to cut through some wind chop. @aj06bolt12r 5 жыл бұрын
@@_noname617 How would they inhibit the boats ability to perform? In a lake there is almost no reason to use them other than to compensate for poor weight distribution. They are controlled by buttons on the console. In the full up position they have no effect on the boat. You for sure do not want them down in following seas because they will increase the boats tendency to bow steer. They are just another tool in the bag for controlling the boat. If you know how to use them I can't see any down side other than the fact that they cost money. I've had the boat over 30 miles off shore of Big Pine Key probably about 10 times now, a few of those were in 2-4 3-5 forecast seas. I can tell you this, if they ever quit working I will be replacing them before I take the boat offshore again. You really need to get someone who has them to let you operate their boat and play around with them...

@@aj06bolt12r surfing heavy seas in a small boat i want to be as nimble as possible. reacting to converging waves or multiple rollers i find it's best to make yourself bigger than the situation, dragging an anchor (trim tabs) poses another obstacle [me] that may work well in certain scenarios, but eventually mother nature's gonna show whose boss. for some reason this year here in the north east it's been ripping everyday. imo you have to out-muscle the situation or you'll get owned real quick. after 150 mile epic/one-way trip with those conditions i battled 20 hours and feel it couldn't have gone any better - with trim tabs they would've burned my (2) 37 gl saddle bag gas tanks.

@No Name yeah, I guess it is a matter of preference. I've ran tons of boats with and without them. To me, I think it depends a lot on the hull and the power of the boat. I've seen some boats that because of the power they have on them and the way the hull rides, you couldn't run the boat without them. Then at the same time, like the 34' Venture that we run a lot. Before when it had the F250 Yamaha's on it, you couldn't get out of the hole or run very well without using the trim tabs. Now that we repowered it with the 300 Verados, we don't even touch the trim tabs anymore! Even in rough seas with a loaded boat in 8 footers!

Ok, yeah, well a lot of it will depend on the budget and what tools you have.

lol piece of cake you "just" this and "just" that. I love watching this stuff though. That boat was not cared for I would think all the risers and floor would need it also

Lol thank you! Yeah, it was sent for a few years of neglect before we got it :) To be honest, the stringers and the deck are in pretty good shape. The middle fuel panel access is a little spongy though. So, we'll be digging that out and patching that here later on down the road when we get to glassing!

Lol this will be a nice boat once we're done :) I got it for next to nothing, which is about the only way you can "affordably" do a project like this. :)

@@BornAgainBoating Oh its your personal boat? That makes sense. I figured you had a customer paying you to restore it... Didn't see how it was financially feasible in that situation if you were to actually make any money for your labor unless there was a very wealthy client with a sentimental attachment to the boat.

Yeah, we usually do a couple of them a year. Depends on what we come across :) Ocean Master's are a good brand, and they are still in business up in Stuart. So it's worth doing :)

You could have augured out the rotten transom and just do a liquid pour transom with carbon bond and then make any cosmetic fiberglass repairs as needed. A lot of wasted time and effort. I did a transom pour on my 86" Aquasport 222 and not that thing is beautiful with 0 fiberglass repairs. Did it all in 3 days.
