All you do is throw the scraper blade in the Sawzall, then hold the Sawzall at roughly a 30 degree angle or so, flex the blade against the rotten wood, then pull the trigger. Works wonders for stripping out wet wood. I couldn't tell you how much balsa coring I've ripped out using one. I'll look forward to your next vid!

Thank you! That's awesome! Um, underwater lights can get tricky and super expensive. Some of the cheaper one's work great, but eventually, all of them, without exception, even the expensive ones, will leak lol So, I've put on a few of the cheaper ones and they seem to work just as good. They only last a couple of years, but they aren't terrible to replace. You just have to make sure and get them sealed properly! We put some TH Marine ones on the Venture and they have been working great for a few months now :) I'll work up a list of a couple next week, we're not at home right now so I can't access land n sea to look through them :(

That's awesome! Yeah, there's a huge debate between doing it from the inside or the outside. Depending on how it's done and prepped, it can be done either way. If the stringers are rotten a lot times you'd do it from the inside, but for this boat, the outside is just fine! Seacrafts are a great boat, we see a lot of those being restored these days. Actually quite a few to be honest, I think I've seen at least 3 23'ers in the last month or two! It's awesome to hear you got it done :) great work!

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes we'll do the transom from the outside, but if all you need to do is the transom and nothing with the inside of the boat, this is the best way. To be honest, in hindsight, on this transom we should have left 3 inches around all the sides, seeing the gunwales on this boat stick in so far, it didn't leave much of a lip. So yes, you want to leave that lip around it like that, but do 3 inches to be safe, this is fine, just in hindsight lol Thank you! It'll be up next week :)

Hi my brother. I am presently repairing a 17 ft mako. The stringers are rotting and there are dry spots in the Woven roving on the floor. I know I have to repair those, but the side of the boat songs a bit hollow. The side are originally done with woven roving too. I am wondering if the hollow song in the sides need to be strengthen as well? Please let me know your thoughts.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 18 күн бұрын
Depends, the gunwales on the outside will sound kind of hollow, some of those makos have foam in the sides, but it shouldn't be too much to worry about as far as the structure of the boat is concerned, if that is what you are talking about. The stringers and transom are going to be the most common trouble locations like you seem to have already find. You can also check under the rub rail where the cap attaches to the hull of the boat. That can separate sometimes and cause other issues. But I think that is what you are talking about.

Ahhh gotcha, not sure about the starters. The brushes seem to be getting dirty and wearing out. Just really quickly. Then the starter will just click and won't push the bendix up, or it won't turn the engine, just lodge up into the flywheel and click! You can take them apart and clean them and they start working again, but not sure how long they will last and what is the root cause :(

I been rebuilding for years and years. I almost never take it off the back of the boat. Maybe 22; whaler. I've quit boats because boat owners are narcissists. I'm tired of bring ripped off. I hate boat people now. I will say, more finish work but less work not cutting the deck out. Once I started charging 100$ an hour for demo work. People brought it to me with most demo done. But what scares them. Nobody curs the stringer out. They scared going through. LoL

What are the benefits of doing the transom from the outside like that? I’ve seen other videos where they do it from the inside. If that boat goes back together even half as easily as you took it apart... I’ll probably just look for boats with rotten transoms from now on and save some serious $$$!!
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the boat really. The biggest benefit of doing it from the outside is that it is usually quicker and easier :) Normally, as long as the stringers and the deck is in good shape, you'll want to do it from the outside so you don't have to cut into the fiberglass on the inside and then mess with the deck of the boat. Especially when the deck has this type of non-skid, you can never match that, or well, I don't know how to do that lol maybe a fiberglass guy might. So doing it from the outside takes a lot of that away and your glassing straight up and down opposed to around the stringers. Both ways are fine, as long as it's glassed up properly, they will both hold up for many years to come! Hahah, yeah, transoms are easy, you can usually do them in a week and a weekend if you really get at it :) plus, doing it in wood and doing all the work, you can usually get it done for under a $1,000!

Born Again Boating, Thank you for that very informative response. What would you say is the biggest factor that determines what size outboard you can hang on the back of a boat? Is it mostly the weight of the outboards? Or does the amount of torque being applied to the transom by a larger outboard play a factor? My boat has a 250, it’s rated for 300 hp (which back in the day meant twin 150s, because a 300 didn’t exist) ... would a single 350 be too much? Currently at 5000 RPM it can do about 30 to 35 mph. Wide open it can do 40 with a light load. I’d like to be able to cruise at 30 at maybe only 3500 or 4000 rpm

You're welcome, um, that gets kind of tricky. There are some rules by the ABYC and the NMMA as well as the Coast Guard. So, basically boats that are under 26' are required to have a HP and weight capacity. Boats above that that are Yacht certified don't really have those tags because it is based on stability, which gets really gray if you ask me! For your situation, the 300 might work, but you want to watch out for the weight of the engine because it will affect the ride of the boat. You won't be able to get a marina to put a 350 on there because it is illegal due to the coast guard plate. So, you've got some legal things there, but I don't think the Coast Guard is going to come and carry you off if you hang a 350 on there lol
@ericdavi1231
@ericdavi1231 5 жыл бұрын
Born Again Boating... it doesn’t have a capacity plate on it. I found an old brochure from the manufacturer that lists 300hp. The Hull is 23 feet and a few inches long 9.5 feet wide and has a dry weight of 4000 pounds. The motor bolts to a bracket that’s another 2 feet long. The 250 that’s on it is a solid motor but really has to work hard to cruise at a decent speed, so I get terrible mileage. If it ever kicks the bucket, I’m going to repower with a 300. But if a 350hp outboard weighs the same I’m thinking of going that route. Maybe the 50 extra HP would help cruise the boat at a lower RPM.

I see, to me, for a 23' boat that seems like not enough power, being a 250 on there. We did the transom on our Wellcraft and put a 250 OX66 on it and that's a 20 footer :) So, I'm always a big advocate for over powering lol I'd rather have more than enough power than not enough! So, I think a lot like you. If we were shopping for an engine and I didn't have the 300 Verado, we'd be looking to put a 350 on the 23' Ocean master! Seeing that they do weigh the exact same thing, the cruising speed will be higher and the fuel consumption will be lower! It's just your boat you know, you can do whatever you want to do, but no one can really legally tell you that you can do something that is technically "not legal" lol I think the Ocean Master has a rating of 300 on it too though, but since we're doing the transom, it's been "altered" to support the "new" horsepower of 350 if we put one on there ;)

Why would you cut the outer glass layer? Your going to have to fix stringers up against the transom interior anyway professionals always law transom from the inside what is the logic here???
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
There are a couple of ways to do a transom. The stringers in this boat are fine and don't need to be reglassed. So doing the transom from the outside is the quicker and easier route to doing this boat's transom. :)

terry fonz, I’m no boat restorer, but everything I’ve ever seen on this type of repair, said never cut the outside of the transom glass as its an integral component of the hulls integrity. I’ll be interested to see how this turns out .

Well, with marine plywood and doing all of the work, the transom would end up around $1000 painted. To do it with Coosa, about $2000! But that's doing all the work yourself though.

What is your opinion on coosa board vs plywood for a transom?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Well, ultimately, it really depends on the budget. In my opinion. The marine plywood is only about $100 a sheet and you can get it at most local hardware stores, that day, depending on where you live. The coosa board on the other hand, costs over $400 a sheet and needs to be delivered! I think that the plywood is definitely stronger than the coosa board, but it does rot and depending on who does the rigging, might only last 20-30 years, more if it is done properly. Whereas the coosa will last indefinitely really, until the transom flexes so much it begins to crack heavily. Which is what we see on a lot of the larger boats with trips or quads on it, just the force that gets put on the transom. After about 10-15 years, they need to have work done because the outsides are stressing and cracking so bad that the whole thing might come off in one solid chunk! But that's all big toy problems and the effects of doing 60+ MPH in a 3' chop in a 40' boat lol

@@BornAgainBoating Awsome reply, I hope a lot of people get to read your reply. Since it is a very largely debated topic especially with new boats being made completely out of composite materials now a days. Its just as controversial as polyester resin vs epoxy. Hahaha, keep up the good work.
