The twist rate of the barrel may not be matched for that lighter bullet. The twist rate is probably too fast for the lighter bullet. You need to match the same grain (140gr) of bullet as your Sig ammo. Seating depth can also affect accuracy between brands. Powder type and charge will also affect accuracy. To many variables in factory ammo. Reloading and building your own ammo is key for accuracy.

Great video, that barrel is pretty thin and was likely throwing shots after the first group (5-6 shots) at 480 due to barrel temp.

Interesting, as some have said different guns like different ammo. But I can say in my own limited testing with 243 Win, that PowerPoints on 2 deer did not make an exit wound, corelokts on 3 deer didn’t make an exit wound, fusions on 1 deer did not make an exit wound. But Nosler partitions blew out of a backside shoulder. All shots witching 75 yards. To be fair they all died so I can’t complain too much, but my limited experience has me wanting to pay a little more for better Performace.

In many cases, the quality and performance is highly correlated to cost as it pertains to ammunition. You’re paying for consistently measured powder charges, projectile dimensions and precision manufacturing of such, as well as quality of components. If running ammunition from the shelf, shoot various options and see what the rifle shoots best for the intended purpose, and only consider cost when there are more than one providing good results. Otherwise, hand load.

In my experience owning precision rifles with Bartlein, Kreiger, Proof Research & Christensen Arms barrels. A good barrel will shoot just about anything even Wolf steel case ammo 1 MOA or less at 100yrds & they seem to like every ammo you feed them. If a barrel won't shoot cheap ammo well it speaks just as much about the barrel quality as it does the ammo quality.

Its definitely eye opening, but I think they key and most important part here is your gun should always be "Setup" to the ammo you prefer to buy/shoot. Its clear your Sig gun is/was setup to shoot Sig ammo. The different grain could be a play. But a True test would be set up 3 similar guns to each of the ammo types and repeat this test. Set the gun to the ammo repeat the test at different yardages and see what happens. Just an idea. But thanks for this field test it was cool to watch it unfold.

It all really depends from gun to gun. I've been shooting different ammo through my savage .270 win trying to figure out what I will use for elk this year. The cheapest ammo I have shot has so far been the best with a group that was a little over 1 moa, all the rest have been more expensive, like $0.50 more a round, but those have all shot 2 moa or worse.

So I’m going to say this and I don’t care if I offend anyone but the ammo you shoot depends on what your gun likes. For example in my 88 Winchester in 308 I have shot Remington psp corelok ammo in 150 grain and the gun loves that but I also shoot a 165 grain hornady sst hand load as well and the gun loves that. I have tried higher price ammo and the gun hates it. Now in my 300 win mag which is a model 70 from Winchester I have cheap ammo and it did ok but as soon as I went to the higher priced ammo such as the sierra tipped game kings or the Barnes ttsx bullets the gun started group sub moa at 100 yards. So in reality it just depends on the gun you are using and what the gun shoots the best

Ammo comparison is a hard one. I have favourite ammo rounds that certain guns I have does not shoot well. For example my .308 shoots federal hunter hybrids best. I bought 8 different brands with similar grains of ammo shot them all and my gun shot the hunter hybrids best. My friend had exact same set up as me (rifle brand and caliber, rings, mount rail, same everything) his shot the hornady eldx best. What does this mean lol I don’t no other than he shoots the eldx,s and I shoot the hunter hybrids.

When reloading ladder loads, you are right in that a rifle barrel may do better with certain brand ammo, different bullet grains, clean versus one-shot (i. e. not pristine) bore, cold bore versus warm bore, etc. I don't shoot more than 10 rounds of one recipe without at least running a bore snake through the bore, waiting for a cooler barrel, then trying another recipe (or brand/diff grain in this case). Jus' a thot. 🤔

He's right about low round count groups not being statistically valid. The entire box of ammo gets close to that n of 30. The big issue with factory ammo is lot to lot variations. I had a 300 Win that i shot the 200gr Precision Hunter out of, 2 different lots, 1 lot shot 10 shot groups right at an inch (1.1"). The other lot averaged 2-3/4" for 10. And that was shot consecutively. It was more for an experiment as I handload, but still eye opening.

So far i have found that she loves the 150 grn hordany sst bullets and the 165 sst and the hordany factory 165. 155 grn hordany fmj she dosnt like as much but the different powder could be a difference. So it was deff a good test on what your gun dosnt like. But i would try 3 different things next time. 1 same grn factory bullets, make sure the barrel is cooled down and the barrel is cleaned each time. It will change also if you run a led bullet vs a fmj bullet. Copper with throw the lead tip bullet off.

I think your results were valid, that sig was optimized to be precision target ammo I don't know but I would suspect that the Nosler was hunting ammo probably with a premium bullet designed to perform better on impacting game rather than being super accurate. Rifles can be finicky about what particular bullets they shoot better. A big thing you could do to help quantify what some of the problems might be would be to chronograph the shots and see if the shot to shot velocities are consistent.
