It would be even better if there was a working example or two built brand new for excursion service based on the engine's design. Imagine having an engine like the A.J. Cromwell pulling excursions in the Black Hills of South Dakota; the Amish farm hills of Pennsylvania on the Strasburg Railroad; or the valleys of the Sierra Railroad alongside locomotives #3 and #28.

Come to Big Shanty, Georgia (Kennesaw) to view The General. However the Baldwin B&O Car Shop shown here has the William Mason, the oldest preserved (recently running) locomotive in North America. 4-4-0. It played The General in the Fess Parker film.

great video. Interesting how we British invented the railways but America wax at the cutting edge of loco design and power. All the loco wheel arrangements were developed in the US such as the atlantic and pacifics. interestingly though the first pacific loco which was indeed American never ran in the States. The first pacific to run was an American built loco for New Zealand. I think I have to come to the US to see preserved steam. I would love to see the UP bigboy 4004 run when it has been restored. i think my favourite US loco is the Pennys K4 which was the inspiration for Sir Nigel Gresley to develop his fleet of pacific super power for the LNER

If you're in the UK you're very lucky to have the amount of preserved steam locomotives you do. The US managed to save some great pieces, but not on the scale of the British.
