This lesson covers a concept that many would consider advanced. But I've tried to explain it as simply as possible.
Borrowed chords occur in music all the time, whether intentionally or not. In this lesson we discover where these chords are "borrowed" from, and what makes them work.
By understanding where these common "outside" chords come from, you'll know when to change scale for your solo.
But you'll also have some new ideas for writing your own chord progressions that are a little less predictable than those confined to the natural key.

it;s easier than you think ALL 12 NOTES WORK...You just have to WRITE your own chord progression . Play the GUITAR..not the Piano. THINK like a GUITAR PlaYer.lol ( KEYS are just PITCH), But lets exployer All 12 notes in C MAJOR/Amin. From C MAJOR/Amin. b2 b3 b5 b6 b7 ( the 5 BLACK keys on the piano) We're going to PURPOSELY play those 5 notes too.lmao Im going PUSH DOWN from C MAJOR Towards C min b6 = Harmonic MAJOR b3 = Melodic min b3, b6 = Harmonic min b3, b6, b7 = Natural minor b2, b3 = Melodic min b2 b2, b3, b6 = Harmonic min b2 b3, b5 = melodic min b5 b3, b5, b6 = Harmonic min b5 b3, #4 = melodic min #4 b3, #4, b6 = Harmonic min #4 #6 = Ion #6 b3, b6, b7 are just the SECOND arpeggion of the I, IV, V chord C Maj F Maj7 G7 CMaj F MINOR G7 YOu can reverse the process PUSH UP from A min towards A MAJOR... The POSSIBLE FULL diminished will overlap in C Harmonic MAJOR and A harmonic min AND C Harmonic min and A Harmonic MAJOR D F Ab B B D F G# There..you can alter those chords.lmao and these AUG........C, E. Ab or E, G# B A Harmonic min b2.....just insert the Bb Maj7........ to G min or D min Bb7 to C min Im still in A minor as the parent key...lmao A min D min E min A min Dmin E7 F (ly#2) A min B min D7 E7 F# dim G# dim/aug E7 F# min Amin B7 E Maj F #dim G# ( phrygian b4) B maj7 G# minor A min Bbmaj C7 E dim F Major Bb7 C7 F minor Amin B min D7 E7 F#7 A b5 The Eb note????? it;s just b3 from C,. ( keep it simple.lmao) or play Lydian #2, b7 1, 3, 5, b7 1,#2, 5 1 ,#2, #4 b7 or 1, #2, #4, 6 It'also over lap to F7 G7 into C melodic min The Melodic min #4 is AKA Lydian b3 you can alter it to A dim so you can play A dim to B dim into C melodic min or A dim to G min/Bb MAJOR D7 into G MAJOR or Gmin Lets say you modualted down to G min...via the Bb note You can playing play G min.....C min D7... but continue to pUSH UP to E7 ( you can use that as your pivot) into A min again....F dim G# dim into A min or E maj or min F# dim G# into A min.... I show the Amin.......D7 E7 F#7...for a reason... ( it's the samething) Amin D min E7 F#7 into B minor B minor is still the II chord of A melodic minor...but you can use it to shift KEYS Bb dim into B minor....as the (N6) as well. or you apply classical music....after playing the B min chord ( A melodic min) Just play the F Maj E min D min G7 into C Maj...again or whatever or from C Maj to F Maj ..E min/E7 into A minor again then play the B7 into the E minor chord... Then play Bb Maj7. C Maj7 A minor.lmao or lets say you play B7 into E MAJOR = C#min G# into C# min... You can apply the N6 C# Harmonic min b2 = D7 E7 into A minor ( again) Just get use to playing G7 into C MAJOR or C min E7 into A min or A MAJOR Then play Harmonic or melodic .....b2....then the b5 The #4 is pushing UP D# into E I worte it all wack for a reason....so your brain might get it all WACKED.lmao

@@guilhermebgirardi no problem.... You know you can play A min penta, D min penta, and E min penta and still be with in all the notes of A natural minor....yes? There's the DOMINANT pentatonic..... It's just a minor with a Maj3...or Major penta with a b7. But I play it over G7 ( it's just so I get use to using it over the G7) So i can see it layer in with A Natural minor... becuase I see the fretboard in the MAJOR scale ( in whatever key) First and foremost....No matter what I do...from decades of playing the fretboard....it's just easier for me to see it...throughout the fret board. It's just me working the dominant penta into it. Or play the C Major....LESS C and E note. R....x.....2.....x...3................5............b7....x......R from the 5th. D b3 x 4 x 5 x 6 R ( dorian) or you can do this G Maj triad B dim triad D min triad You can also do this using the A melodic minor D7 dominant pentatonic Mix #4 ..aka lydian dominant) E7 dominant penta Mix b6 AND play B minor pentatonic ( B dorian b2) you'll still be within all the notes of A melodic minor. if you play A melodic min or A lydian b3 it's F # aeo b5 or dorian b5 F# Harmonic min b5 or melodic min b2......yes?? In other words F# minor/A MAJOR You could had play F dim ( lydian #2 or Lydian b3 into F# minor If you play A Harmonic min b5 it's Lydian #2, b7 ( or Mix #2, #4) If you play E Harmonic min b5...it's C mix #2, #4 as in C7.... ( notice the C7....when applying the N6 from A) Then you might see this...A dorian #4, b2 or you could had play it from the D7 while in A melodic minor D mix #4......to D min #2, #4... F# harmonic min b5 ( just another way to get to F# minor/A MAJOR)..... Anyways....He did lessons on dominant chords to different keys.. Just here are some dominant is modes... you can use to play over I, IV, V...progression...ect Using all Dominant chords...( for jamming over Blues or whatever) I use the Dominant pentatonic as a stencil to over whatever dominant chords.. Simply modulate. mix mix #2 mix #4 mix b2 mix b6 mix b2, b6 mix #2, #4 mix b2, #4 Mix #2, b6 phryg b4 loc b4 Aeo b4 , b5 ( the F# aeo b5.. if you play the A melodic min b2) Ion #5, b7 Ion #4, #5, b7

some of them have what i would call "the cobain switch" where you think it's in a certain scale but then it finishes with a borrowed chord

Many are as Radiohead often simply switches to a minor where you expect a major. Of course, those talented folk do much else in their music, but your ear is correct.

One of the best fret jams yet. It’s nice to see it like this, because all day you can look up parallel minor and get the concept. Then, you have the job of searching for teachers that show examples in popular music. This just shows both, and even begins ear training. Of these examples, I can pick out a song instantly that I know that has one of these moves as it’s main hook. So the move, I remember by the song. Very good.

This is one of the lessons I always come back to. Helped me to understand the use of borrowed chords from a minor scale, but also borrow from others modally such as C mixolydian and/or C Lydian. Superb lesson!
