What is modal interchange? And what is modal mixture? In this crystal clear guitar tutorial you will learn all about Modal Interchange, a technique for composing awesome and surprising chord progressions. Take you songs to the next level! Everything is explained with top notch graphics and tablature on screen. You will learn to use this technique to create chord progressions with borrowed chords from a parallel key or mode. Think of the dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian and Locrian mode. This technique of mixing tonalities is used in modern Jazz, but is also a great asset for rock guitar players and suitable for other styles of guitar soloing. I show you why and when to use a certain chord to get a certain effect. Never a boring progression again. You also learn how to improvise over modal mixtures.

Thanks for the great video. Your explanation is crystal clear and I love how you provide many examples of how modal interchange works in practice and little gems like how the transition between the modes can happen within the melodic line. The standard notation plus guitar tab plus chord shapes alongside the explanations helps to understand this concept much more easily. Can see a lot of work went into this and other videos. Thanks again.

Your videos are tremendous! I'm a relatively new piano player, been learning 18 months, started late in life at 53.....your content is really helping me understand music in a deeper way. I'm not really interested in learning tons of songs but more interested in expressing myself through playing what I feel and writing my own tunes. This takes a lot of learning to understand how to play the melodies/harmonies and modes are of course an important part of that. Your explanations are so easy to understand. Thank you very much for all the amazing content!! You should have many more subscribers, your channel is a real gem :)

Another great video. Rob, it would be so great to have you expand your lessons to a comprehensive multi chapter course with backing tracks, tabs, videos in progressive lesson plans starting with the basics and working on up. I would certainly pay for such an expanded course. While the videos are fantastic, I would love to have a more structured course with "lesson plans", etc. Just a suggestion. For instance Modes combined with Triads and Scales. Yes, I know about your ebooks, and have bought several, but I would like it to be a more structured package.

Other 'Modal Interchange' videos do not explain the 'Why it works' part. Is there a follow-up course to this as you explained at the end of this video? You mentioned a follow-up in regards to using the Harmonic minor and Melodic minor scales for modal interchange. I cannot locate this aforementioned video. Thank you kindly.

This is an amazing video and really helped me out. Just a question at 14:09 since I am having trouble working out what to play lead wise over modal interchanges. You say that we can "play a scale that fits the entire progression" Does that mean we could in theory, take our key (Say C Major), and just, move the notes over that interchange/borrowed chord to accomodate? Example: C Major progression - C Am F Fm (borrowed Fm) Should I just, take my A and move it to Ab to accommodate the Fm? This results in a weird kind of scale that I don't really think is useful. It floats almost between major and minor. Like, Ionian b6 or #5 or something. Is this even some kind of scale doing this? I mean, technically by doing this, we'll have all of our notes right? Or am I missing something in that. When improvising over these changes, I have heard a ton of different ways to approach playing lead over modal interchange and this has come the closest, but it still doesn't linger long enough. Should I be playing C minor over this instead? Why, why not, etc. I feel like I'm comfortable enough interchanging and borrowing chords, its leads over the top and where to shift scales, modes, etc that I'm not quite grasping.

This is an incredibly valuable lesson thank you for sharing. Is modal interchange, then, also the same thing as chord substitution? Are those terms interchangeable? Thank you!
@QJamTracks
@QJamTracks 4 жыл бұрын
Not quite. A chord substitution doesn't need to come from a parallel tonality, while modal interchanges allway do.

Is the second part already available? If so, where? If not, when? I'm interested to hear about modal interchange in modal progressions, as there is no implied functionality (according to another video from you :)) to the degrees in the mode/scale.
@QJamTracks
@QJamTracks 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Fenna. The video itself has two parts. The first part is about modal interchange between major and minor keys (ionian en aeolian) and the second part is using modal interchanges between major/minor keys and the other 5 modes. Using a modal interchange in a harmonic functional chord progression doesn’t make the progression modal. Those are two different things. Still, it is possible to use an modal interchange in a modal piece of music, where (in most cases) functional harmony should be best be avoided as much a s possible as it could draw the music back to the parent key of the mode. When interchanging modes in modal chord sequences you have to be cautious to keep the character of the mode in which you want to compose and not stray too far away from the intentional mode. I hope this makes things a bit clear. And besides all of this…trust your ears :)
