00:00 Borsalino Fedora Review Introduction
Dress hats have certainly had their ups and downs over the past several decades in menswear, going from something that would be worn by most men almost every day to something that’s only worn today by true menswear enthusiasts. Some hat brands maintained their prestige today, and one of them is the Italian hat maker Borsalino.
02:39 The History of Borsalino
08:34 Hallmarks of a Quality Hat: Felt & Straw
12:01 Quality of Sweatband Leather
12:52 Styling of Hats Offered
We ordered two new hats from Borsalino to examine for today’s review, and both were made in Italy.
14:30 New Hats: 1. Francesco in grey
(www.delmonicohatter.com/produ...)
15:26 2. Beaver fur felt hat in dark brown
(www.delmonicohatter.com/produ...)
15:55 Detailed Analysis of Workmanship
** Fit: True To Size - Both fit in Preston's head relatively well, so, fit-wise, we’d call them true to size.
** Brim: Raw, Unfinished Edge - Both feature a plain or raw edge to their brim rather than being trimmed in fabric or sewn. While this look is fairly typical among modern hats and even some vintage hats and is perfectly unassuming, Preston personally finds it to look a bit rustic or unfinished in appearance.
** Ribbon: Gold Branding - Both hats have grosgrain ribbons, black on the charcoal hat and brown on the dark brown hat; Borsalino is stamped onto the bow.
** Wind Cord: A Vintage Detail - The beaver fur hat also features a wind cord, which is a somewhat obscure vintage detail.
17:59 Our Overall Thoughts
The overall workmanship on both hats is solid. The stitching is even and tidy with no obvious defects. The lining and leather also seem to be of good quality, and the felt strikes a good balance between softness and durability.
19:10 Borsalino Hats: Then vs. Now
We mentioned a friend of the channel Steve Heck earlier on, and, in fact, he sent us several vintage Borsalino hats to take a look at. He also sent us some of the vintage bowler hats you can see in our video on that hat style. You may visit Steve’s website here, from which we also sourced some of our historical information: germanaustrianhats.invisionzo...
20:44 Are Borsalino Hats Worth It or Not?
It comes down to your own personal criteria. Whatever route you choose, just be sure to pace yourself & consider all your options, taking in mind the advice we laid out here.

As an observant Jew I wear a hat daily for most of the day (it's a sign of respect for us). I've been wearing black Fedoras and Trilby's for many decades. The high quality rabbit pelt used by Borsalino holds up well over many years and shapes itself to the head comfortably over time. All that's needed is a shoebrush, and a new band every so often together with a steam clean. I also have 2 black Bailey's Trilby's from 1972, which are like new. Yes, quality materials and workmanship are worth it!

I own two Fedoras from Stetson made from wool and rabbit felt. Overall I'm very happy with them (a wind cord would be nice though sometimes) and I even thought twice about the rabbit felt one costing about 150 €. Most important for me was to go to a local hat shop, one of the few we still have, let myself been guided and being able to examine the quality.

Thank you for mentioning Akubra, I swear by them myself, I own several. And to this day their dressier hats are made with all the hallmarks of the classic dress hat that you mention, including the ones missing from new Borsalinos, and for a fraction of the price, e.g. as of June 2021 the Stylemaster is $200 Australian ($153 US) and the Bogart is $215 Australian ($165 US). I also own an Akubra RM (made by Akubra for RM Williams) which pairs just as well with a suit as it does with jeans and more casual shirts, and even after drying off after a torrential downpour you could still wear it to a wedding (it might look more countrified, but hey, you can take the boy out of the country...).

I am the only person in my immediate family who has not had skin cancer. Both my brother and father had melanoma; my father dying from it. My brother's doctors recommended that I practice sun safety. I don't go out of the house without a hat on. My local hat maker, who is Italian, recommends that you stay clear of Borsalino, He says that Stetson and Akubra make much better hats, use better grade furs. The hats I like cost hundreds of dollars. Before I buy a hat, I talk to the hat maker. I want to make sure that whatever I buy he can fix, clean and reblock. I've worn a hat for 40 years, slouch hats / digger's hats, sombreros / ten gallon hats, fedoras, drover's hats, etc. Whatever hat I buy has to have a commanding brim, for I have huge shoulders and a head that is in proportion to my shoulders.

I'm still wearing the Akubra fedora my wife bought me 25 years ago. I've had a new internal band fitted, but otherwise still in very good condition. I can't remember the type but it looks like a direct copy and colour of Indiana Jones' hat. It could be a Stylemaster, if Akubra has been making them this long.

I wanted one of these when I started out, but saw the akubra stylemaster on Kevin from JJ hats channel and it looks like a more robust buy for starting out. Hat maintenance is important as well as resistance to rain and weather, and most of these things are rarely mentioned. What I'd like to see is a comparison of different hats and how their construction affects longevity, things like material stiffness, the material used and how they keep their shape over time.

I have a Borsalino homburg style hat in buff or light olive. It was purchased in Naples in 1951 or 1952 (the name and address of the shop that sold it is on the liner), along with the original box. It was bought by my father when based in Italy with the military. It probably cost him less than US$20. He did not wear it much at all, and it is a beautiful hat in near mint condition. Not sure what it's worth, but as it's not for sale, that hardly matters. 🕵️‍♂️

Great review! I have four Borsalino hats still in my hold, in the late 80's I had at most nine different models. Most of my Borsalino's were made in the 80's but two of the one's I have left are made in the late 70's and I sort of feel the difference in quality. All in all I love these hats although there's not as many occasions I feel on point to wear them. I tend to wear bucket hats and caps more often.

I've found Il Cappello, an Italian company that makes decent hats for no money at all, from 30 to 50€. I've got one so far and it's good for when it's raining and such, when you might not want to wear an expensive hat. They're obviously machine made, as the sizes are exactly true to the label. My local hatter that makes very high quality hats can't always get the size 100% right. I've got a super large head and at that kind of size, just normal shrinking of the felt may make the hat not go on my head at all.

Indiana Jones got me into hats. I have always loved his outfit in Raiders, and I literally wear almost the exact same outfit every time I go out. It makes me feel awesome, and I get nothing but compliments on it. Penman hats, AdVintage hats, Screencapped leather and hats, and Herbert Johnson are amazing hat companies in addition to the ones you mentioned in the video. Though most of those focus on Indiana Jones related hats, so that’s probably why I’ve heard about them a lot.

On a trip to NYC over 30 years ago, I stopped at a well-known hat store. On a lark, I purchased a Borsolino. I have worn that hat for 30 years of winters and it still looks like I just purchased it. My guess is the reason for their bankruptcy is that few people were buying their hats, because they last so long and hold so well! "Planned obsolescence" was NOT their business model. No doubt in my mind that you get what you pay for and I am betting I will get another 30 years out of this great hat. Is it worth it? YES!

I find that there are plenty of options of vintage Borsalini that provide a higher quality workmanship, heavier felt, and a much better price.

Excellent presentation. I don't know how people used to wear felt hats year round. My head dissipates lots of heat, especially in warm weather. I can work outside in 20 degree weather without a hat and I'm balding.

I recently found a old borsalino hat probably from the 50's in a building im working in. Its quite nice but i struggle to wear it asit makes my face itch. Ive dont research trying to find the cause but i suspect the lanolin oil had dried and is leaving the hat and drying my face as it falls out during the day. Any tips on how to stop this and make the hat comfortable to wear again? Ive condisered conditioner or sending the hat for cleaning.

I had a chat with my local Akubra (Australian made hats) agent. He was telling me Akubra is importing more rabbit pelts from Europe because of the 'war' on rabbits in Australia. Australia has been attempting to eradicate the rabbit for decades, by introducing the calicivirus into the wild rabbit population. It seems to be working.

You mention Michael Jackson as a Borsalino wearer. Years ago, I read an anecdote about him on concert tour, in which he did a dance number in which a hat was a featured prop. He started onstage, and then a hat was tossed to him from offstage. He caught the hat, then tossed it into the air, and it came down to land squarely on his head, every time. He then proceeded with his dance number. At the conclusion, he threw the hat out into the audience! Well, his tour managers were growing concerned, because these were $200 hats, which meant that this act was becoming expensive! So, without telling Michael, they decided to substitute as less-expensive hat. Soon, at the next performance, Michael was onstage, expecting to catch a hat to be tossed to him. But when the cheaper hat flew onstage and he caught it, he immediately tossed it back, and continued the act without the hat. After the show, Michael talked with his management, explaining that he threw back the hat because, being different, he had not had a chance to rehearse with it and know for certain that it would land on his head after he tossed it into the air -- so, please, if they wanted to change hats, tell him beforehand, so he could practice with it and so be prepared. This is of course an important lesson for performing artists: if something goes wrong, just work around it, acting as if it was part of the act all along, and your audience will never know the difference. So, now I wonder: were those Borsalino hats that he was tossing into the audience every night?...!

Preston, do you have any tips on staying cool in suits/multilayered clothing while living in a hot climate? Texan here, and that’s the only thing keeping me from jumping on into dressing more how I want to dress. I couldn’t find this subject on the channel, though there are so many videos I easily could have missed it. Thanks!

Borsalino makes the best hats by far. The Framcisco is very refined and the name on the band is not flashy at all. I mean sh×t it is 2021 and not trying to look like I'm wearing a costume from a 1940s post war movie. Its a small brand placement.

Borsalino was my first hat, a trilby from 1970, it has 50 year old paid just 20€ and is perfect. I love it and I never use it (and quality hats in general) in rain days but now I prefer to by hats from melegari in Milano, I don't know why, but I lose my interest in borsalino

Nice video, as usual. However, I see that your criteria in judging whether a product is worth or not vary. For example, a Montblanc Meisterstuck fountain pen is judged as "yes, it is worth it" while its price, given its quality, is very high and almost double the price of other pens of similar if not superior quality. Anyway, I really appreciate your channel. Thank you.

IDK about Borsalino hats just because I don't own any, but what I am sure of is that Mayser classic straw hat, which cost me 70 euro - it does cost every cent payed for it. It gets heavy use every summer during 4 years already and I don't see why it will not serve me another 4 years. I like paying for quality, because you cry only once :)
