It’s no secret that we at the Gentleman’s Gazette are big on hats, but they are less commonly seen today than at the beginning 19th century, for instance. So, what happened, what changed, and why did men stop wearing hats?

Hats have been around since before historical records even began. In fact, the oldest surviving example of prehistoric clothing that we’ve found includes a hat. Specifically, it’s one made of bearskin worn by Ötzi “The Iceman.” He was discovered in the Alps in 1991, an estimated 5,000 years or so after his death.
As we also mentioned in that previous guide, one such reason may have been that men returning from the World Wars were sick of wearing helmets or uniform headgear, but this may not be a principal reason either. More significantly then, we think we’ve got four main reasons why hat-wearing declined.

Today, we rarely see most men wearing hats except for the very casual baseball cap. While some menswear enthusiasts would have the knee-jerk reaction of calling the baseball cap ugly or childish, the fact of the matter is that it does have a rich history and, in fact, is older than some of the other traditional styles that we’ve highlighted before.
In conclusion, there are many socio-cultural, technological, and economic reasons why modern men often skip wearing a hat. From social class to automobiles to central heating to internet message boards, hats have had a rough go of it over the last 50 years or so.
Fortunately, though, there are still some social events where hats are required, like at Royal Ascot, for example, or as part of military or other dress uniforms, and even today, you will occasionally see some celebrities sporting hats as part of their overall image.
So, perhaps hats will rise again and become popular at some point in the future. We can’t say for certain, but if they do, they will likely become popular again because of fashion rather than function.

Wearing hats was mainly a North American and British custom; if you look at old photos from other European countrries, for example Italy, France or Sweden, you see that is was not as near as common for at least men. Of course people there did were hats during the winter monts, but that had a practical reason.

In the UK it was seen as a clothing item that indicated your class. Topper, upper classes, Bowler, middle classes, Flat Cap, working class. This was particularly prevalent until the 1960's.

In the southern US, Alot of men wear ball caps on a daily basis, and it's a little bit like the social status thing you described but it's more based off of the "Newness" of your hat 😂 if it's really worn out and kinda torn up on the brim it usually means you work a blue collar job or something that you use your hands for, if it's kinda new ish but still looks nice that's middle class, and you're wearing new type PFG or Columbia caps then you're either a teenager that just got his first one for his birthday or you live in the city 😂(this is a joke I don't actually know about any of this but this is kinda speaking from experience)

​@@coversbyben8564 That's everywhere in the US lol My husband refuses to stop wearing his favorite hat. It's one of his favorite sports teams and it was one of the first gifts I ever got him. It's filthy despite me washing it several times, the brim is chewed up, it's got a big rip on the back (better the hat than his head...he was doing something with a trailer (he's a trucker) and he scraped against some metal thing), and it's just in a horrid state. But he loves it and I love how much he loves it so it's not going anywhere.

My mom was riding in a car with her friend in the mid 1960s when her friend complained, "great, we're stuck behind an old man in a hat". My mom chimed in about these slow old men in hats until she realized he too was turning on her street and he was her father. 😂 I asked how she couldn't recognize his car, she said back then pretty much every old man drove the same car.

I remember doing my driving lessons in the late 1970s, in those days old men wearing hats in cars were everywhere, usually a Morris Minor and they would drive everywhere at 40mph, in town, open road, dual carriageway, you name it. My instructor would say “they’ve never had an accident in their lives but caused hundreds.”

You forgot one of the most important reasons of all: hairstyles. Hairstyles became a fashion trend in the 60's and 70's and more and more young people would style their hair to look the way they wanted, also the change in fashion from a mostly suit oriented society to a casual one with everyone wearing clothes that couldn't combine with hats made the fading of hats rather quicker.

I always thought that was the main reason. And with that near-global transition in fashion also came the clear message that trends and rules of the past, up until their own parents' generation, were to be rejected by the youths of that post WW2 era, replacing old restrictive ideas of decorum and social acceptance with new ones, of individualism, authenticity, freedom of self acceptance, self expression, and inclusivity for all in all aspects.

@@JoDee172 Indeed. Fedoras and trench coats were associated with adults. The hippies, products of the early years of the baby boom, wanted to show off their hair as much as possible, as the title song of the musical "Hair" made clear. That generation never really grew into adulthood, and never adopted adult fashions. The declining amount of head room in cars may have been as much a reaction to changing styles as a cause. Back in the days where there was no air conditioning, my grandfather wore long underwear even in the heat of summer, and he wasn't unusual. When did that practice stop, and why and how did it ever become popular in the first place?

My grandfather always wore a fedora. I told my wife whenever I became a grandfather I was going to do the same. As soon as our daughter announced that she was expecting my wife bought me several fedora's which for the past 4 years I wear daily.

I had the pleasure of meeting an elderly gentleman in Warsaw, Poland a couple of years ago - 80 plus, sporting a tuxedo, a very well brushed and cared for wool frock, with a white silk scarf and a bowler hat. I felt being brought back to my childhood immediately. ❤

@@BigSupaFly in the era of non bench seats there is no place to easily store your hat if you have a passenger. I have tried wearing my dress hats in the car and the headrest makes it impossible to keep the hat on my head . If I wear my flat cap it is possible to wear a hat while driving even in the winter.

As a historian I have always found this topic fascinating, especially the significance of hat wearing in a cultural context. When, for example, a Victorian described a man running around outside :"Hatless", it was a way of saying that he had lost his wits and was behaving irrationally .

I started wearing a fedora almost all the time about 20 years ago??? Why?? Simple -- I am VERY practical man. A wool fedora is inexpensive - $50 to $100. It shades your eyes from the sun. It protects your face in the rain. It is VERY warm in the cold. The hat fits closely, so the pocket of air in the crown insulates wonderfully -- better than a winter parka. [Winter parkas don't seal, and don't move with your head, so it is hard to see traffic when walking.] A hat moves with your head, If too cold, a scarf is all you need to keep very warm -- even when sub-zero. PLUS -- they are stylish and people remember me. I am in sales, and I LOVE the idea that I am easily remembered. I like dark blue, and dark wine colored hats.

I'm surprised, you overlooked something. With the 60's and 70's came a rise in subcultures where hair styles were key identifying factors. Long hair for hippies or metalheads, mohawks and dyed hair for punks, etc. Plus, more "clean" hairstyles were seen as professional, and as such hairstyles have become a bit of a class symbol

I was also about to comment and say exactly the same. Especially that this factor (the way that the hippie generation saw things and was rejecting everything representing the older generation) determined the disappearance of the hat all over the world, even in countries where the factors listed in the video were not as important as in USA. I actually think that because of this factor we can safely say that hats practically where abandoned as a regular part of men clothing since the 70s. And that not only in America.

My Dad use to wear a hat in the 1950's. By the 1970's he stopped wearing his had. He told me at that time, hats were known to cause hair starvation to the scalp, discovered in the 1960's.

This was surprisingly and amazingly interesting! Great history and answers, I have learned a lot. I've always been a hat guy of just about all types and assumed other guys were weird for foregoing them or having an umbrella. My primary purpose was weather protection, but include fedoras, newsboy hats, berets, and even sleeping caps at home. Gloves are a necessity as my hands are always cold except in summer. Great cars too, the T-bird & Vette, very nice.

My favourite combination is a wide black fedora (made from rabbit fur, not plastic), in combination with black trench coat and black woolen sweater. It makes the combination look uniform, and yet somehow casual.

I bought a Stetson Fedora about 2 years ago after watching movies from the early 60’s, with folks like Sinatra and Dino. Get compliments everywhere I go. I also started dressing in shirts, with ties and vests ( and I work from home). Let’s keep it up gentlemen, for this generation desperately needs it. I feel like a lot of the negative association comes from people buying and wearing fedoras with otherwise ultra casual and (lazy) clothing, then talking big about having style and deserving respect even though they put no other effort into their outfit whatsoever. Hairstyles have nothing to do with it really. People still wear hats today but the media has dictated the fashion trends and this killed the hat. Hats started to go into decline in the 1950s even among conservative men but modern tv really drove it down.

A hat is great to keep the sun away from your head and I use a Stetson well-ventilated hat in the summer to keep my head cool. A warmer felt hat in the fall and spring, but in the winter it's a beanie to also keep the ears warm.

Another main reason , I guess: The rising of the rock'n roll culture in the 50's, with youngmen's new interest on greasy hairstyle. This interest on hair made explosion in the sixties when The Beatles brought in the new fashion of long hair. Hats became outdated. Loved this video, very educational.

Wear a short brim fedora everyday. Brim is enough to provide shade and protection from weather without being bothersome and is surprisingly warm in the winter since my preferred hat is a dyed woven straw, even in Colorado. It was a tradition passed down from my grandfather who insisted if you couldn't get into a car wearing a hat it was poorly designed. He owned a dealership, so it may have just been a sales line he used.

One thing you overlooked is that wearing a hat has a real advantage when it is sunny, to save your head, ears, nose, cheeks, etc from becoming sunburnt and possibly getting skin cancer. Hats are also great for keeping your head warm. I have lived in Australia where nearly everyone wears a hat outside in the outback because of the power of the sun.

I'm Australian and many of the men in my family own an akubra hat. My grandad is never without his, but myself and fellow grandchildren tend to wear ours only when we know we'll be spending a lot of time outside. We grew up rural, in the city, hats are rare unless they're ball caps/snapbacks etc.

This is not exclusive to Australia or other hot regions anymore. With global warming, even Central Europe which used to be a very cool environment (basically 25° summer, -25° winter) gets 45° summer days. It's even higher in cities, to the point where doctors are telling people not to go outside unless absolutely necessary.

A gentle correction: The rim-less items which you referred to as "hats" are caps. Hence, baseball cap, knit winter cap, etc. The difference is the presence of a rim (hat) or its absence (cap) When I was a boy in the 60s in the US we boys all wore caps of one kind or another, especially in winter. Gentlemen wore hats; workers wore caps, berets, etc.

in Türkiye, there has been a resurgence of classical hat wearing on men, specifically the flat cap or irish cap or in Türkiye as "Kasket", its mostly worn nowadays due to because of its comfortability and classiness, and its mostly worn around the west of Türkiye (example: Izmir)

As a farm kid growing up, you wear baseball caps. But to be honest, they served little purpose as they didn't provide cover for your ears or back of the neck. This is literally the reason the term "red neck" came from. Southern males wearing improper head cover. And it is only a new term in a matter of speaking. Fifty years ago everybody wore large brim hats in the field. Man or woman. It didn't matter. When I went into the military it didn't take me long to transition from ball cap to boonie which offered more head cover. But the boonie hat was not authorized for normal wear and you could pretty much only get away with it when being in active operations or training in the field. Then I shifted to the Navy. Back to ball caps. And when in dress uniform, even worse. The "dixie cups". Now I'm out. I've got more grey in my facial hair than black. I've got the "friar tuck" hairline. I still occassionally buy ball caps. But these are meant more for recreational, outdoor use. But for the longest time I would still wear a boonie hat when working outdoors. Now I've transitioned to a large brim leather hat. (Something close to a cowboy hat.) My wife hates it. But it isn't for show and tale. It's to offer cover for my pre-historic skin. I've yet to get skin cancer. And I'm trying to keep it that way.

So, my western-style hat is not just a fashion statement, but a political one as well. Having said that, I do wear a drover-style hat when doing field work for the reasons you listed.

I think hats disappeared as a result of the Automobile becoming more ubiquitous. It is awkward to wear a hat in a car, wich is one reason, but since men spend less time outdoors, there is less need for a hat.

While you mentioned the car as a major reason for not wearing hats, you left out THE most important part: headrests! Before headrests became a necessity, you could still wear a brimmed, or even a wide-brimmed hat without too much of a hassle, I often did. But once headrests became the norm, that went right out the window! You cannot ride in a car with a brimmed hat unless you spend the trip leaning forward, thus avoiding the headrest, but making you quite uncomfortable, especially if you're the driver. I know, I tried. Headrests, alone, would have put an end to the wearing of traditional brimmed hats.

Having grown up in the 60’s, I would offer another reason why hats lost their popularity. As younger men grew their hair longer, and as men of all ages began developing their hair styles as a new fashion, I believe hats were worn less because the ladies and girls of that day expressed their appreciation of the newer hair styles. Wearing a hat would have resulted in obscuring a fine head of hair. Turning the head of a desired female in my opinion resulted in the loss of popularity of the hat.

I was surprised that there was no mention of the "teenager". The decline in hat wearing coincided with the rise of the teenager as a distinct phenomenon. Prior to the 1950s, children became young adults, and went from children's clothes to adult clothes. Post WWII, with more money in their pockets, adolescents could more and more have their own fashions and trends in clothing. Dressing like your dad was square... er... daddio.

Thanks for the well made video! One additional technical advantage that I think has also reduced the use of hats is sunglasses. Brimmed hats were much more necessary for blocking sun glare before sunglasses became widely available to the common man. Just consider the baseball cap worn backwards-its brim isn't even used for shade! I've never been fond of caps, but I've found the benefits of brimmed hats in the last 10 years. Wearing one takes a bit of self-confidence to express individuality in such a way, which I might not have had as a younger person. But the practicality of a brimmed hat, even in Finnish conditions, is outstanding. Whether it's rain, sleet, or snow, my glasses would get spotty without the brim to protect them. Here in Finland, where the sun often shines lower in the sky, glare is a real problem too. My headgear of choice is a Stetson type in summer and a Traveler hat in winter. For dressier occasions, I turn to felt Fedoras or Trilbys, and I’ve even worn cotton fedoras for ballroom and social dances as a stylish version of a sweatband.

I’m now 71 years old and I do not leave the house, in any weather, without having a brim hat on my head. The compelling reason(s) are having developed a complete lack of hair and wearing glasses, both of which are pretty much two milestones of aging for men. I’ve worked outdoors most of my life; hatless in my youth. Once the scalp sunburns set in and the rain or snow on my glasses Interfered with my activities brimmed hats proved invaluable. Heat, cold, sun glare, snow- rain,?wind…. Nothing improves an outdoor activity better than a proper brimmed hat. Just sayin….

I be mindful to the eye thing. Can be that of a heath problem,getting older. That your eye can't make correct compounds, keep it moist. Because the eyes naturally make it so that sun and home light doesn't hurt, make you turn away so much towards it. As liveing indoors to much is bad for yourbeye health. Works for me as a 22 year old. You have to dress at a similar level of formality as what the hat would suggest though. You can wear a fedora with a sports coat and chinos pretty easily, for example. Feltcaps work great for dress/sport shirt + slacks/chinos/some denim. I will say though, I do love beanies too

Otzi was shot by at least 2 arrows, and fell some distance (thus his body was not Looted by his attackers). (At the museum, it is speculated he probably didn't die when attacked, and was likely trying to escape when he succumbed to his wounds/blood loss... From the few arrows in his quiver, he may have wounded, or at least driven off his attackers. His hat likely came off when he fell. It was so obvious he was the victim of an attack, that the hikers who discovered his body, thought he was possibly the victim of a recent crime (recent years, not as in days). As I recall there was an issue because his corpse was actually just across the border in Austria, not Italy. Police soon realized "Otzi" was not a recent victim, and contacted a university. Perhaps exposure killed him, however, arrow wounds were the likely primary cause of death 💀

I think the rike of Teenage culture in the 1950s played a large part in hats not being as popular to the masses. The crooners still wore hats but the young rock and roll guys did not. Having cool hair a style like Elvis ,Little Richard , Jean Vincent and Eddie Cockran became more popular. Instead of having lots of names for hats there became more names for hair cuts.

Great video. Somewhere else I heard (probably in another youtube video) that the baseball cap's history may go back far further than the modern usage as a game head cover. The suggestion there was that the more modern form of the baseball cap actually came from full brill hats that were modified by sailors to allow for better peripheral vision for work tasks, and were even adopted during the pirates during their hayday because the trimmed brim hat allowed for better vision while still keeping the sun out of the eyes of the shooters.

This is absurd. Are you saying people today spend more time indoors then outdoors? As opposed to people in the 30s,40s and 50s? Hats were worn to protect one from the sun, rain and other elements. At one time people preferred the shade to being out and exposed to the brutal effects of sunlight. Sunbathing is a recent habit, and did not become a thing until it really took off after the 2nd World War. Fashion had a lot to do why people stopped wearing hats.

Military and food. Military because facial hair was not the best thing to have when you needed something like a gas mask to fit tightly on your face. Food because European food was mostly eaten with a fork and knife, but we diverged to stuff that can easily get in your mustache like kebabs, burgers pizzas and so on - oftentimes without even anything to wipe your face with. Overall, we could say that every part of modern attire is tailored for utility and utility only. To me it's not sad, it's unsettling - it makes me feel less like an individual, and more like a tool.

That's possible, but there are also other things. The worker's caps were made of cheap materials like cotton or wool and were relatively easy to sew, making them way cheaper. The top hats were made of silk and diffucult to manufacture correctly, making them way more expensive. And when it comes to practicality, Worker caps were brown, so dirt was not so visible on them. And when it got dusty (a regular thing for a working man) you could just slap it towards your arm to get the dust off. Top hats were black, so every speck of dust could be seen on them and had to be cleaned regularly. Generally, they were very impractical. And wearing something impractical was a sign, you don't have to work manually, therefore you are rich.

When I started work in London in the mid 1980s, there were still City Bankers wearing Pin Stripe suits and Bowlers with the classic brolly. For Americans to see what it looked like, look at Monty Python's Ministry of Silly Walks. Sadly, from the early 1990s, they had completely gone, along with much more casual clothing. I bought a bowler from the shop that invented it in St James, London, and wore it to London with a morning suit. People were actually asking to have a photo with me, and I felt uncomfortable so never wore it again. I do wear flat caps in Autumn and Winter, or a Panama in the garden in summer. JFK broke with long-standing tradition by not wearing a top hat to his inauguration. He was also famous for his luxuriant red hair, which made him highly visible in crowds, so he was disinclined to wear a hat to cover it up. Since JFK and Jackie were such trend setters, America and the world took note and followed suit, to the everlasting dismay of milliners and haberdashers everywhere. Nothing can make an outfit so unique and polished as the right hat.

The thing is that hats stopped being popular at around the same time in the whole western world, not just in the USA. In Europe they couldn't care less of what JFK was wearing or not. So no, he wasn't really a key factor.

I still wear one, although mostly in the winter when I wear a London Fog jacket. That doesn't count the big hat I wear when working outside or the occasional ball cap in the nicer months.

I was thinking about this the other day. I wonder how much the popularity of sunglasses is part of it. One of the basic uses of hats is stopping you from squinting in the sun, but sunglasses take care of this while being more portable, better at the job and usually cheaper. Additionally, the use of headphones in the 80's 90' and 00's makes having a full brim inconvenient meaning that only baseball caps viable. The rise of earbuds may negate this. Another note on headphones is that in some social circles, it replaced the hat as a status symbol and fashion accessory.

In the summer, it's hard to do better than a lightweight fine straw hat with a 2.5 to 3 inch brim, c crown or center dent fine, but the c crown is a bit lower profile and slightly more casual.

Ive worn a hat my entire adult life starting when i served in the US Marine Corps and learned how to wear a cover ,as a civilian i really liked the Fedora and began wearing them while out on the town on weekends ,once i began wearing a fedora every day i began collecting them,i have between 50 & 60 Fedoras ,many are vintage 1950s examples .

Even finding a good, well made hat that is affordable is difficult. I wear a hat every time I step out of the door and more often than not, it is a baseball style simply because of availability. I do have a Stetson for winter wear but doing so in public is a challenge. Booths are so small there is no place to put a hat. Some chairs do allow a careful hanging of a hat but most are curved. the tables are built so it is even difficult to keep it in your lap. Still, I sport my cover. For the record, you are right on with the car roofs. In some I even have to take off a ballcap. Great video and interesting correlations!

There's a fifth reason people stopped wearing wide-brimmed hats: the rise of sunglasses. Men went from wearing hats to keep the sun out of their eyes to wearing sunglasses, which helped them keep the sun out of their eyes while keeping their heads exposed to the fresh air. As for the "neck beard" issue, I have to say, that's kind of why I stay away from the trilby and the fedora and instead stick to the flat cap or a homburg. But one thing to take into consideration is that there is a certain look that comes with wearing a cheap trilby along with a t-shirt and jeans vs wearing a nice fedora or trilby with a matching suit.

Also transition lenses! Wearing sunglasses or clip ons can be a pain when you're already wearing eyeglasses, so hats could help out there, but now it's pretty common to get transition lenses if you wear glasses everyday. Also seconding the difference in perception of trilby with t-shirt vs trilby or fedora with a suit.

I never understand this perspective because my eyes are very light sensitive, and so the glasses function to protect my eyes from strain. This is the case for everyone, however. Limiting UV exposure to the eyes will prolong eye sight

Actually a hat with any type of brim keeps the Sun out of your eyes better than a pair of sunglasses(unless the sun is directly in your face like morning and evening sun) Normally my head is facing forward and the sun is above me shining down into my eyes whether I have glasses on or not. Wearing a hat stops this, no hate just my thoughts and observations ✌🏼

I generally wear a fedora in the warmer weather and a cap in colder weather. Also … I drive a 1923 model T Ford runabout nearly every day .. around 80 miles a week. With the top down it is amazing that the air over the windshield holds my hats in place most of the time. It’s only the occasional side wind that tend to displace them.

Fabric selection makes a huge difference. I wear almost as much year round, and even in 90+ degree weather, I am still comfortable. Yes, a hat too, heh.

As some have said, fabric selection is important. Also, though, your body does acclimate to it after a while. It can be 90°F outside, and if I’m in shorts and a tshirt a breeze will make me feel cold, because I typically wear a jacket of either fashion or motorcycle protective variety year-round. Your body adapts.

I happen to enjoy wearing my hat. I have a Stetson that I wear and enjoy it for its ability to shade my eyes on the sunny days and then the protection during rain and snow. I also have a Homberg that my wife likes it also and I have to often take it away from her when I want to wear it.
