Thank you about info about the scale - so important!
@federicomuciaccia91914 жыл бұрын
here is a simple and cheap trick I used to see if my (budget) scales are properly calibrated: 1) take a thin sheet of paper, fold it exactly in half, deepen the fold with your nails and cut along the fold (not using scissors, just by dividing the two sheet away with your hands). 2) take one half of the sheet, make a paper ball with it and weight it. take note of the measure 3) repeat the procedure dividing in half the already halved sheet and weighting it 4) repeat as many time as you can (or until you're able to cut the paper exactly in half) 5) place all the measures in a computer and plot then. x is the fraction of the original paper sheet (1, 1/2, 1/4, ecc) and y is its measured weight. you can also use a millimetric paper and draw the plot on it, if you don't have computer abilities 6) with a ruler or some other straight object, see if all the x-y measures fall exactly onto a straight line and if this line precisely pass through 0. if it is the case, your scale is almost calibrated and reliable. end note: for the scale to be properly and fully calibrated you also need to check the slope of the line or if a known-weight object reads the same, but you can completely skip this complex procedure if you always use the same scale for all the chemicals (for example: if your slope is higher than a properly calibrated scale, you are just multiplying all the recipe by let's say 1.15, which yields exactly the same recipe) hope it helps!

1st: This lengthy procedure really is rewarded with result because it is always unique, and special. 2nd: I love to see this old technique presented today for one specific reason: I can reverse-engineer old pictures from history and better imagine what world looked like back than, knowing how certain technique present present day to us.

Hey man, thank you so much for this video. I was looking for a way to understand this technique for non-photographers and you were very helpful. I think you'd enjoy knowing the work of Spanish photographer José Ortiz Echagüe, he was an absolute master of direct carbon printing. His photos are just breathtaking. Thanks again!

My lucky day, Topshit video! Your carbon printing is insanely cool. Are you making video w/D850?

yes D850. Thank you! I'm paddling through period of testing, but soon I'll all the variables under control.

Aha I guess you do use DAS, if I understood. Does it work better with paper than with glass as the final support?
@BorutPeterlinPhotography4 жыл бұрын
DAS has many advantages in comparison to dichromates. For my work, that means, really dense negatives with a single layer carbon transfer, I can use only dichromates. Concerning glass and paper, is the same, just some additional preparation of the glass, but on the end of the day, it should be the same.

I see that instead of rubylith or lithographic tape you use a mask template. What material do you use for the mask? How thick is this mask?

Borut, what are you using for your carbon tissue support?
@BorutPeterlinPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Whatever plastic sheet. In this case an old RC cibachrome paper that was ment to be thrown away.

Is the paper sized? Do you use gelatine hardener?

Of course. Otherwise it doesn't work.

hello, would be x-ray film a good option for a negative for this carbon printing ?
@BorutPeterlinPhotography4 жыл бұрын
It would definitely not be a good option, but if you would prepare the carbon tissues with insane amount of ink, thus pushing the contrast, you will get a decent print.
@cronos_78none474 жыл бұрын
@@BorutPeterlinPhotography also it would be better to use normaly film and make good results to get good prints ? i have to see that i can get sooner or later the option to tryout carbon prints, i like how they looks :)

Hello. I've a question for you. Is it possible to print directly on the definitive paper, without transfer from the tissue to the paper as the bichromate gum? Thanks.
@beatrizpomesjimenez98294 жыл бұрын
It should be able. I am not a photograph expert, but I have been researching on Spanish photographer Jose Ortiz Echagüe, who was a master in this technique. I believed he did direct carbon printing, no middle transferring steps.
@parrySc3 жыл бұрын
Solamente si la exposición se hiciera a través del soporte; el mismo que debería tratarse con aceite. Con un vidrio sería fácil.
@CristianGeelen4 жыл бұрын
I’m super interested in the process. But if you would want to print big how would you do it? I’ve read a lot about creating digital negatives. :)
@BorutPeterlinPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Digital negatives are yilding really poor tonal scale. Image setting off set negatives are much better for that. In analogue way it's also possible, by enlarging a negative on another negative and then copy to another negative.
