I am about to buy a bicycle with a Bosch Active Plus motor. In my country there aren't any mountains, but we do have 'extremely annoying' viaducts with an incline of ~5%. So - as the Bosch motor did not overheat in your video, and the plastic gears inside the motor housing did not break either, I think I'll be fine buying this bicycle. Thank you for testing!

Thanks! The bike and motor performed really well on the climbs but I can’t speak to the long term reliability or longevity of the motor. I sold the bike two years ago. It didn’t cause me any problems while I had it but I may have only put 500 miles on it? Before I purchased I specifically wanted a brand name motor and Bosch had a good reputation.

@@thatalaskaguy Bosch indeed has a good reputation. If you allow me, 1 more question: which battery came along with your bike (watt/hour), and can you recall the range you got from it by extreme use (hills/heavy wind etc.)? The reason for asking: manufacturers always provide the range measured/calculated in absolute perfect weather conditions, with a dummy cyclist wrapped in the most streamlined cycling suit out there. I take that with a grain of salt of course, and that's why I am always interested in the opposite: real life tests under the worst conditions.

@@JanJansen_ it came with a 36v 11Ah 400Wh battery. It would usually read around 60 miles of range in the minimum assist setting and as little as around 20 miles in Turbo the highest setting. In the cold the range would be reduced. If you were climbing steep hills or heavy wind and wanted max assist I’d say plan for 20-30 miles of range.

The Active Line Plus motor is not intended for mountain biking ..... actually city bikes!

Why did they sell it in a mountain bike then?

@@thatalaskaguy I think that BOSCH wanted to try it with the ACTIVE LINE PLUS motor in the eMTB area but the demand was low and after 2 years they installed the Performance Line!

@@bandit8720 it wasn’t very good until I installed the tuner. That really woke it up and made it a lot more fun.

@@thatalaskaguy Hello, OK, once you've tuned it is of course more fun. Doesn't tuning affect the battery? Less range?
@thatalaskaguy3 жыл бұрын
@@bandit8720 yes and no, it depends on how fast you want to go and with how much assist. It’s the same case as stock. Since it now provides boost over 20 mph, you will use more battery if you are going over 20 in all modes. If you stay under 20 it won’t be much different than stock. You can also turn the tuner off completely and then you’ll be back to stock. If you are running in turbo and cranking on it over 20 mph for top speed, I believe it only showed a range of 14 miles. In the lowest mode it still shows around 60 miles of range. IMO the bike should have some stock with this performance because it isn’t very impressive otherwise. It drove us crazy cutting off at 20 because that was right where our cadence was when riding flat ground with boost in the two highest modes.

@@erikmalmberg7319 It seemed like it worked quite well and caused me no problems while I had it. I ended up selling the bike a couple years ago. It was more fun after I derestricted it. 😄
