At 3years old and about 9000kms. with no horrible noises, my bike motor stopped working with error code 500 displayed. Being out of warranty, it would likely have cost a new motor from a Bosch ebike dealer. HOWEVER ! finding Peter and his video tutorials resulted in a working motor, with me replacing my cracked idler gear with parts supplied by Peter. Total cost less than 2 new tyres, plus the knowledge that with Peter's services I've no real excuse for spending thousands of pounds on a new 2020 motored ebike.

Hi, I have the same problem with error code 500. (Drive unit BDU-290P - Performance line speed) I cycled 9,600 km. Isn't it sometimes hidden in the software to force the drive to be replaced around 10K km? Generally, the engine still works and the error appears after a break in pedaling. If you maintain even gentle pressure on the pedals, you can travel up to 20 km. Could you describe what was the cause for you? The service claims that the entire engine needs to be replaced. It's absurd to replace the entire engine every season! Regards.

Very good video, clear naration, good video and no annoying background music. Within minutes of watching, I asked myself, how can these expensive motors be manufactured with inadequate water protection. Sealing a shaft exiting a casing is mastered by thousands of applications such as motor vehicles, boats, kitchen and laundry appliances etc, so this is a complete manufacturers defect. The seal design needs to be revisited, as this these EMTB motors should be impervious to rain, puddles and creeks etc. The manufacturers should be reparing these free of charge.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. I am not defending the manufacturers here but if you look at the evolution of these motors, they were first used on road bikes and can normally cope with the odd puddle and a wash down with bucket and sponge. The odd failure would have been negligible. It was the cycle manufacturers who decided to try these motors in mountain bikes, possibly with the manufacturers blessing? I don't think either party fully understood the amount of abuse and heavy cleaning an MTB goes through. There is a silver lining to all this. The motors coming through now, are being better sealed. I am sure the issues we are seeing now will be a thing of the past.

I think you've just saved me thousands of £'s. Been seriously considering buying an electric full suspension mountain bike. But after seeing this I think I'll continue to grind away without the aid of a motor. Even my non electric mountain bike has 8 bearings in the frame, that need replacing every couple of years. Add all the bearings in a motor and it's going to get very expensive just to maintain very quickly. My knees are going to have to go without the assistance of a motor for a few more years I think.

Thank you. Most instructive. I did wonder (due to water getting inside before) how much sealent & silicone lubricant you would use in the "O" rings.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
The only O-rings that seal anything are between the crankshaft and the crankshaft bearings, and to be honest, they are predominantly there to stop the bearing spinning on the crank. Because water can sit in this area and rust the bearing to the crankshaft, I usually smear some water resistant grease around this area. We tend to fit the double lip rotary seal between the crankshaft and the sprocket carrier, this protects the right-hand crankshaft bearing completely. Then we fit the MudStop to protect the main motor bearing. We have a seal for the left side under development and it should be ready before winter.

In this case it is usually the electric motor brass gear has worn or the electric motor bearings are failing. Easy test is to ride faster than 15.5mph or 25kph and when the motor cuts out you should hear a big difference in noise. If not, please email me and we can discuss further. www.ebikemotorcentre.com

@atnfn

I have an E-bike with a performance CX motor too, after watching this one I started thinking my bike made quite a bit of noise too. It's like when you read about someone having some awful disease you start feeling the symptoms too. I think this video makes the motor sound too quiet after it's fixed, it's Hard to judge noise from a video. The noise my bike makes seem to mostly come from the gears inside the motor. The pedals still feel silky smooth when you rotate them, but the motor does seem noisier than this one does after it's fixed. I knew about this issue from the start (probably from watching this video a year ago) so I've avoided water like the plague with this bike, it's never been washed, never been used when it's wet. A couple of times it started raining lightly when I was a couple of km away from home. I doubt I've ever gone through a single water puddle. I'm guessing if you get this issue you would see a difference in how long the battery lasts, because of the extra friction.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 жыл бұрын
Great comment atnfn. Believe it or not, that motor sounded a lot quieter in real life than it did on the video! If your motor is noisy, there will be a reason for it. Firstly, don't be afraid of the rain or water. Enjoy and clean your bike, just don't direct water under pressure at the bearings and your motor will be fine. If your motor is noisy and your crankshaft rotates smoothly, it maybe a broken crankshaft gear circlip, this allows the crankshaft gear to rub against the transfer gear and the motor sounds excessively noisy. If you send it to us in the UK, I would be happy to quieten it for you.

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre Жыл бұрын
The Bosch Gen 4 is a very different motor to work on. It's more complex, special tools are required, there are a couple of parts that are extremely easy to break, and everything must be done in a very particular way or you will have problems. When we see the mess many people make of repairing the Gen 2, we are reluctant to encourage them to have a go at the Gen 4.

Was a great video and much appreciated. Couple of questions as I feel it could just leak again. No smear of grease on the bearing outers or seats before you pressed the bearings in? Makes bearings easier to remove in the future. Looks like water has got to that circuit board covering those electrics with liquid electric tape or corrosion x oil which is safe for electrics would be wise as this waterproofs the board. Would definately no matter what the seal looks like add some silica sealant around the housing as obviously water has got in there and I would be adding a good layer of grease on the outside of bearings to help stop water. It's pretty poor to have water enter an outfit like this I have a bafang motor on a fat bike that has been through a lot of deep water fully submerged and has had no ingress. Looks like the Bosch motor could do with a pre service before use. I. Looking at getti g one so will strip it down from new and redo seals.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
This motor was pressure washed so hopefully, would not suffer the same fate again but I get your point. If we service motors in our workshop, they all get a smear of waterproof grease on the outer face, it makes no difference for later removal and does not last 5 minutes on the bearing seal, but it does help with any gap between the bearing and motor case, stopping water or debris entering this space. The printed circuit board is already quite robust and thinly coated. Also, with little fresh oxygen within the motor any corrosion is very slow and can normally be easily removed. Normally, if the board has been wet enough to cause problems, the rest of the motor will also be badly damaged and is usually scrap. I have never known a motor cover seal leak yet? So adding silicone to something that does not need it seems a bit of a waste? It also makes future removal of the cover more difficult and time consuming. Fortunately, we now offer seals for the outer bearings on the drive side of the motor and have a seal in prototype for the left side. Personally, I would not buy any current ebike mid drive unit if you want to take it under water. I would stick with your Chinese one because it will be cheap to replace 👍

Fascinating, thank you 🙏 personally I’m surprised these don’t run in an oil bath with a sump… I realise the electronics might not like that but auto gear boxes on cars seem to cope with valve bodies running solenoids and wiring, and I believe, possibly wrongly, some electronics? But at least if there was water ingress the oil could be changed. Plastic cogs? To stop harshness I guess but that can’t be good. Metal powdered cast gears instead? …anyway any Shimano motors in? I see they keep cracking crank shafts to crank arms falling off…?

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 жыл бұрын
No, changing the bearings is not something you want to do in your shed! Don't panic, the Bosch motor is an excellent motor and very high quality compared to some. The later builds are the same as the early builds, but the water in this one was caused by the last person who worked on it. Sometimes, when you re-fit the right hand motor cover, there is a dowel (peg) at the top and bottom of the motor that align the cover up with the gasket face and screw holes. The dowel at the bottom of the motor can stick and once all the screws are done up and feel tight, there can still be a big gap between the case and the motor underneath. If this gap is not spotted, water can flood into the motor!

Hi Pete, I have a Bosch Performance Line CX, and a few days ago it began to make a noise, mostly on emtb o turbo mode but only at climbing.... Similar to a coffee grinder. How can I know the kind of bearings or kit I need to replace? Thanks a lot
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 5 жыл бұрын
The “coffee grinder” noise is usually the first sign that the main motor bearing is failing. As your bike is 2018, it should be covered under warranty. As your bearing has failed so soon, this normally points to an issue with water getting into the bearing? This maybe from a deep-water crossing, hosing/pressure washing the bike around the crank area etc. You can normally confirm if it is only the main motor bearing by removing the chain from the front sprocket and turning the pedals. You will hear the bearing while pedalling forward, when you pedal backwards, you are then listening to the crankshaft bearings. Either way, if this is something you want to fix yourself, I would leave the motor in the bike, remove the right hand crank arm and sprocket, remove any plastic motor covers and then remove the right-hand motor cover, you will then be able to see and feel all the bearings and ensure you get what you need. Or, you can send your motor to us for repair. I hope this answers your question?

I wonder why they put the mechanical componets right next to the circuit board? If they separated them they coud run all the bearings in an oil bath and all of the componets would last much longer in my opinion. Or maybe some better outside seals?
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
It's a good question and although oil is extra weight and cost, better seals should have been fitted. But basically, when these and indeed most ebike mid drive motors were conceived, they were primarily designed for road bikes and as road bike motors, they suffered relatively few failures. A few years later when manufacturers started putting the motors into mountain bikes they underestimated the abuse they would undergo or the conditions they would see on a regular basis. Ebike motor manufacturers are giants and for things to change, it can't be done overnight (a bit like turning a supertanker round). However, things are changing and a lot of the newer motors are better sealed, so maybe in a few years, I will be out of business!

Hi RoBo, It is possible to remove the PCB completely, but it would require the three large motor wires to be de-soldered from the board. You do stand a very good chance of damaging the board though. I would leave well alone unless you absolutely have to.

Hi Pete, I have a 2017 Haibike xduro nduro with the Bosch performance cx motor it’s just covered over 1k. Just recently on tougher cadence the crank arms starts to slip and makes a horrible grouching sound. The motor works fine and has plenty of power but it definitely sounds like it has wear in tear. Does this sound like something you could fix.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
This is not something the Bosch motor is particularly known for? Especially after 1K. I would recommend getting this looked at sooner rather than later. The only thing I can think of is water ingress into the large clutch bearing possibly? There is not much we can't fix, so feel free to contact me if you want to go down this route.

There is not much to check unfortunately. Just listen to your motor. Remove the chain from the front chainring and wind the pedals back and forth, any grating, rumbling, scraping noises or excess play in the crankshaft, get it looked at before your warranty ends.

How important it's to use the right grease for these motors. I'm using blue grease. Before I use to used white grease synthetic but it doesn't last too much
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 14 күн бұрын
The right grease is generally critical. The wrong greases can affect the plastic gears, can cause the clutch bearings to slip, damage seals and O-rings etc. For example, using an aluminium based grease with a lithium based grease, will turn the lithium grease back to oil, and then it will just run off of the parts it should be protecting. The genuine Bosch grease is readily available and does a fantastic job.

Hi pete, mine sounds like a coffee grinder now, how long can I ride it before it goes kaput?
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
This is a great question and I hope lots of people read it. Once a bearing becomes bad enough that it can be heard or felt, it is done! Finished, kaput! Once the noise or play starts, the balls inside the bearing are rough and wearing away fast. As the balls get smaller the bearing seals come away from their seats and let in any water or dust that comes their way. All the motors I repair that that require crankshafts, or motor cases, or full service kits when just a single bearing would have done the job etc. are from those who keep riding until destruction. 👍

You have a good point Mark. If these motors are used on road in relatively clean environments they will run and run, just as a standard peddle bike will. When you get them in a mountain bike and use them off road in wet, dirty environments they can suffer, again, just as a standard mountain bike does. This motor had not done big miles, but had seen a lot of water!

Turns out I sent this video to my mate yesterday and asked him if he had ever had any servicing done to his motor and he said none at all and wasn't aware that it needed servicing ever lol But as you said this motor has seen a lot of water and hard water! IMO any well known brand mid mounted motor is good for at least 10 years in normal road conditions. These motors are very new technology and I do wonder what the life span / mileage range of them will be. I'm running an Active Line Plus motor myself with 2k on the clock and it has been fantastic, never missed a beat. But again, I only do normal road riding. Thank you for your reply :)

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 3 жыл бұрын
This depends massively on so many different variables that it can't really be quantified. The length of time a motor normally lasts depends on riding style, riding terrain, bike cleaning habits and equipment, countries climate and weather conditions (wet or dusty), how you transport your bike and how you store your bike etc. If you jet wash your bike for example the warranty would be an excellent choice because your motor may last as little as 100 miles. If you ride on the road, keep your bike in a warm garage and wash it occasionally, it could last over 50,000 miles (at which point you would probably have sold the bike and bought a newer model). This is a question I am asked a lot, but sadly, it's very tricky to answer.

My motor is squeaking when I manipulate the cranks. Any idea why? The cranks don’t seam to have any play.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
All the moving parts within your motor run on bearings, so squeaking is not common. First, I would remove the chain from the front sprocket and turn the pedals forward and backwards. This will eliminate the drive train, and pushing the crank arms forward and backwards uses different bearings and may narrow down where your squeak is coming from? If you find something your not sure of, you are welcome to email me through the contact page at performancelinebearings.com

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
There is no dedicated service schedule for the Bosch motor. Basically, if it's not broke, don't fix it. However, if it starts making any noise other than the usual quiet whine, or you feel play in the crankshaft, or feel vibration etc. That's the time to get it looked at. Don't ignore it, it will destroy itself eventually. With clunks and creaks, check seat post, rear shock and linkage (if fitted). Check pedals, crank arms, knees etc. first.

@@tydlig You can see from my pictures (Haibike Rider) in that post, the snapped inner crankshaft circlip. There are three of these on the crankshaft inside the motor and any one of them can fail. When this happens small bits will be floating around inside the motor and could jam a gear? If this happened though, it would be fairly shocking and I would be surprised if it would clear with a back pedal, but you never know? Personally, if your motor is out of warranty, I would remove the right hand motor cover and take a look inside, just to be sure there are no bits floating around? I have circlips if you need them.
