Awesome vid. Just fixed my 15year old axt2000 hp using this guide. Got a matching screw in capacitor (20uF) from Amazon for £8 and all working as new ready for another 15 years. Many thanks!

Thank you Magic Smoke for this. My exact model gave the same symptoms on Sunday, I stripped it down and yes the capacitor had had a melt down. Ordered a new one (difficult to find) and awaiting its arrival imminently. Easy Job. BTY the capacitor had its cap blown off when I opened the shredder, I thought the factory had used too much glue (it was the melted components that had forced it off) I removed as much as I could and reassembled. It started first time but after 30 seconds thick white smoke appeared. Definitely time for a new one!

Yes a capacitor prolapse.... Still works on with the Cold cathode starter PF correction caps. It is about 20 years old and has done a lot serious amount of of work and it is still going? I might retire the old girl soon....

Love the channel name - I've experienced the magic smoke myself not long after purchasing a BBC Micro. Curiosity always gets the better of me and I always have to turn them on to see what hardware is inside which 99% of the time blows the RIFA cap. Many thanks for this video - I've inherited the exact same model and it's not shredding properly as the bark from the branches doesn't go through and stops branches going down.

I have two of these and the first chewed to spiral screw to bits and /I welded and new edge but it did it again so I bought a new screw (very Expensive) it worked fine and is still working except the random direction problem and hesitant starting. I will maybe use another capacitor or maybe two wired together to give a real kick starting to it. The gearbox does need stripping out and regressing as they do no use enough for a long life also the bearing in the top of the spiral seizes up £1.60 for a new one including postage. The second machine is doing the same starting in what ever the way it wants if. At all, I will do that one as well but it is newer than the other one. One hint is to spray down the inlet/ outlet holes with a spray can oil/grease to stop it going very 😊badly corroded from atmospheric moisture .

Was a genuine replacement capacitor not available?
@razenby4 ай бұрын
Probably could have bought one but I just found some about in some old light fittings. . They are physically larger but are proving much more reliable.

Great vid, thank you. The replacement part is totally obselete now. I've scoured for one, could you recommend a replacement?
@razenby2 жыл бұрын
Do what I did just get an old light fitting or look for a motor staring run cap on ebay. Any one will do so long as it has the correct AC working voltage and capacitance. Must be an AC capacitor.
@Dblondn9 ай бұрын
Did replacing the capacitor fix the random rotation issue or was that down to a faulty switch? Thanks
@razenby8 ай бұрын
Yes, replacing the cap sorted the random rotation issue. The capacitor' phase shit generates a rotating magnetic field with more torque and rotational determination.

I borrowed my neighbours chipper chopper magnum only to find is is turning in reverse. It does not have a reverse switch like yours... Is there a way to get it to turn in the right direction.
@razenby Жыл бұрын
Usually the motor run capacitor has failed or is failing. As it gets to bad it can start in ether direction and when running lacks torque.

Mine seems to work fine in the normal direction but does nothing and blows the fuse if I start it in reverse. Could this be the capacitor too do you think?
@razenby4 жыл бұрын
Could be the capacitor. If it stops on a motor pole and the cap isn't working the motor has no starting torque and the fuse blows. Check the cap. We did loads of shredding since I made this video and it is working fine.

I have a slightly newer version of this and my capacitor went 'up it' too. As I was unscrewing the case it fell apart. I have an internal switch - lever style - and I cant find where its from or what its for. Any suggestions? I am tempted to tape it up and ignore it.... Andy G

I need one of these caps mine blew a while ago been to lazy to swap it - stripped it down when it broke on me the first time managed to get it working for a bit but then it failed again, so I packed it up and left it as I couldn't be arsed to disassemble it again. Any ideas where I can get parts for these from?
@razenby4 жыл бұрын
I salvaged 2 x 8uF caps from an old fluorescent light fitting. You can buy motor run caps on eBay or amazon. From memory I think the original was 20uF but it ran fine all summer on 16uF during lockdown as my wife shredded nearly the whole garden. It was used a lot!! There is a big tolerance on these caps anyway,

It is a great shredder far superior to the current models. For mine the on off switch needs replacing. Bosch no longer support so have not found a switch replacement yet. Does anyone know of a source? ( failing that I will be trying to use a karcher switch which is the 700 2/6 unit but without the bosch specific perspex mounting.)
@razenby2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the slow rate that this part perishes held off failures until after the pipes were discontinued. It may an unanticipated end-of-life fault. They should still sell them. Second hand ones are £50 to £90 and you cant get the correct ones for this otherwise splendid manhine.

@@razenby my karcher switch has just arrived and i have been able to use it with a little modification so my shredder lives on. Saving landfill!

I have the 1600 version, which is basically the same. I've had it for 23 years. It is fine for woody material, but woe betide trying to get leafy branches to go through without clogging. The design is pretty rubbish, really. Bosch designers must have known about the clogging problem, yet they designed a machine that is difficult and time-consuming to take apart in order to remove a blockage. Health and safety, I suppose. Adults cannot be trusted to clear a blockage in the most straightforward manner by disconnecting power, then removing the top chute. But I'm now a dab hand at removing the chute! Just to make life even more difficult, the Bosch designers specified special screws to fix the chute to the body. These screws require a special screwdriver. However, I've replaced my screws with bog-standard Philips screws. Having removed the screws holding the chute, it can be lifted off. Then remove some (not all) of the side screws that hold the two halves of the body together. Now you can prise them apart and remove the inner chute. Then it's easy to remove the blockage. Couldn't Bosch have done a better job? Well, of course, but maybe they expect customers to just buy a new shredder when the current one is clogged up solid. Note that once the blockage has been cleared, the shredder still works as well as it did when brand new 23 years ago. And it is super quiet!
@razenby4 ай бұрын
Mine is not too bad bad but I have noticed that the tendency to block depends on the plant being shredded. Mine chomps happily through, laurel, birch, privet and birch but feed t a branch of Cotoneaster and it turns into carbon-fibre ropes that binds up the Slauger (that's a name I just made up for slicing auger - see what I did there?) . The wife seems to very talented at blocking the beast too. Have you noticed that the machine sounds like Yum, Yum, Yum.

My Bosch orbital sander, hedge trimmer and power drill dates back to circa 1996 and are still going strong. Maybe they have down-engineered the products to reduce cost?? Bosch cutting tools such as drill bits, hole saws, circular saw blades keep their edge extremely well. So maybe Bosch quality these days is a mixed bag. True the shredder has been the poorest Bosch product I own.
