@Bosnianbill. I laughed @10:35 when you said"... it will not be good news so let 's do it!" with enthusiasm. And then at the end, the less elegant way to open the lock. Thank you Bill not only for the education but the entertainment. I understand that lock was only intended as a safety lock like for electrical boxes to keep someone from accidentally turning on power when an electrician is working on a circuit and not for security. I guess the unique key makes it easier for workers to remember which key is for the lockout. I appreciate the lessons and what you do in the name of science. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

I just looked up another lockpick video dealing with this exact lock. The camera was terribly placed, there was almost no dialogue explaining what was happening and the picker was completely unprepared to get each of the tools he needed. I really appreciate the quality of #Bosnianbill videos. The audio is very consistent between videos and he explains everything in a way that I, a non-picker, can understand. I appreciate his self-deprecating humor because, even though he's a knowledgeable pro, he makes me feel like I could do this kind of thing, too. Keep up these great videos!

For some reason, some people, when a machine or system is shut down, and they they think they need it back on, have gone to great lengths to turn it back on. There have been a lot of deaths from this type of intentional accident.

The core is actually pretty important, the company using these does not want people getting these off non destructively. If they were very easy to pick, Someone could get it off and hurt themselves, and say the machine wasn't locked out. So having a decent core protects the company from lawsuits and osha.

That was really interesting. Very different style. Like some other locks you've picked, the real challenge in this one is being able to tension it with that weird warding. I wonder if a Y wrench like the ones used for car door locks would work, or maybe one of the circular ring tensioners with the little pins. When I first seen the key bitting, it reminded me of a tubular lock and what one might look like flattened out.

For a $20 lock, it would be good enough for a garden shed or kids bike. The core was actually fairly pick resistant. The average picker is not going to have a specialized or custom turning tool for this lock, so in the wild that would stop the thief.

14:38 I understand that from the perspective of a locksmith this is a big issue. But if you think from the perspective of construction sides, it probably makes sense to have a partially destructive override. I could imagine that the situation might emerge, where the machines are clear to run, the team is in safety but someone lost his key. Let's pop that lock before we lose another hour of revenue on the machines.
@hxlize4913

bit of a late comment here but from a tradesman, most workplaces using LOTO will have all teams locks keyed the same eg: one of the electricians will come and inspect it and take their branch’s lock off. doesnt matter if the original key is lost as any tradesman of that branch can verify safety and remove the lock.

Gary Cameron it’s used for applications in factory’s on equipment, and things along those lines. Locks require a certain level of resistance to picking, as to avoid injury or damage to machines by someone messing with the locking mechanism, but must be easily cut with a set of bolt cutters in case of an emergency.

@@666Tomato666 Exactly. The point of this lock isn't increased security, it's patent protection for the keys such that only the manufacturer can make them. LOTO locks usually have a soft (or even notched) shackle because they are intended to be cut off rather than opened with a key if they are left on when the person issued that lock goes home or loses their key. Think of them more as reusable seals than security devices.
@norlin76

Can you pick one with the plastic covering? They get stuck partially rotated because the back of the chamber the core is in has a point that the lock gets stuck on and doesn't provide tension on the core anymore.

Seems really complicated for LOTO... Just speculation here, but MIGHT have been based off a more secure lock and they intentionally switched out the plate to provide another option if a worker forgets to take their lock off and leaves for the day. That way, should it happen a supervisor can, after verifying that the work was complete and the employee is indeed off site they can just bend the plate back, let the core fall out and the only thing that needs to be replaced is the plate (which could prolly just be bent back into shape) .
@RobertSzasz

You'd never do that. You'd just cut the lock off, retain it with the documentation of why you removed it, and then give the person who left without proper procedure hell before they can return to work.

WOW that was overkill for a lockout. the last lockout lock i used was a No 2 master with a restricted keyway back when the cores for master locks were completely brass without the potmetal bibles they use today. keycode was 1C681. assuming the C stood for [C]ustom keyway. we also used cheap 'equipment is tagged out' with a cheap magnet to hold it on the electrical panel. i always used my padlock.

@firesurfer
@firesurfer 4 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking not. You'd have to try it. The springs are horizontal. If you strip the plastic it just spins in the same plane. Perhaps if the plastic becomes completely destroyed it would work. It's rather irrelevant due to the plate weakness.

It is, there's no need for that level of security for LOTO. On top of that most places that have a LOTO policy mandate that all locks used by individuals be matching in build and color so you don't have a choice in what you use at all. Where I work you have to use company issued locks so you can't even just paint a lock you bought, but again, there is absolutely no need for a high or medium security lock for LOTO.

The locks look absolutely ridiculous there but it matches my house key...

@@FranzAntonMesmer a lot has changed in 4 decades in regards to LOTO requirements. Mostly pertaining to you use whatever your employer provides or they can get fined and you can lose your job (worst case scenario). Again, there is literally no need for high security locks for LOTO. If I have to remove your lock, after going through the proper steps to prove you're no longer on the premises and you're unable to remove it yourself, I'm going to cut it with bolt cutters. I could pick it, but that takes too damn long and bolt cutters are a thing. So no, you don't use whatever you like. At least not if you're employed by a company that has A LOTO program in place and they follow it. You use what they give you.

Those sidebars ride inside a plastic sleeve huh? I get that this is a lockout lock and not a security lock. But at this point you might as well use a sticky note or a ziptie. This thing can be opened with a screwdriver and some muscle.

That's exactly the point. If the employee calls in sick or goes on vacation and forgets to turn in the key, they need to be able to destroy the lock without damaging the equipment. The lock just needs to be strong enough to prevent someone from inadvertently energizing the gear. Some places still use zipties, but a lock is reusable and can't be cut by accidental contact with a sharp object.

it's always sad to me when a lock is so very nearly a great lock but they do something really stupid like make it with plastic parts or make a stupid part like that top place. I imagine this could be a really secure lock with some false gates, higher quality steel internals, and a properly designed top plate.

As safety lockout padlocks are intended to act as reusable tamper seals, this is quite the flaw. One could open the "pop tin", pop the shackle, put a new "pop tin" lid on to hold in the core, and then screw it back together. Not the easiest attack but far easier than picking and only costs $20, less if you can buy "pop tin" lids separately.

I love you bill your great but I have to correct you on the false set there is no such thing as a false set on a lock with no security pins if there is no spool there is no counter rotation to say there is a false set! That’s just movement on the core 😊your still amazing though!! Stay safe stay legal
