I think their 1-10 rating system is meant to represent how many seconds they take to rake.
@krissisk41636 жыл бұрын
Really all they rate is the body. You've gotta admit that if you take that body and give it a good core then it would be a good lock. Nothing short of a grinder is going to beat it destructively. It's just too bad that Master apparently doesn't consider picking enough of a threat to protect against.

Very interesting. I’ve never seen an M930 with all standard pins. The few I’ve picked have 4 spools. BUT, I have run into a regular 930 with all standards... and it’s supposed to have 4 spools. Looks like a case of terrible QC, because I’m pretty sure that’s not spec. Even with the spools though, this is a 30 second Lock. It’s a shame because it’s not bad otherwise.
@mattlogue13004 жыл бұрын
Why don't they always put in spools, etc?
@katiedonovanAlt4 жыл бұрын
They've discretely changed them. In the now 930X, the screw holding in the plug is a TORX. Because, you know, it was too easy to get to the core and see their crap using a screwdriver just about everyone has. I think that's where the "X" comes from. Also, FYI; the "KA" you see in some Master model names means, "Keyed Alike." If you check the shelf at your local big-chain hardware store, you'll find a lot of these locks are keyed alike to others nearby. This makes it easier for people who need to buy a dozen of these at once to get them keyed alike; but of course it kida screws the folks dumb enough to buy one for their home from the store in the neighborhood because all of their neighbors who bought that lock probably have a key to their lock as well as their neighbors'. Master likes to screw everyone they can who is NOT a business. I think the reason they put their best cores into their LOTO locks and crappy ones into their "10's" is so their corporate clients can tell their insurance companies that since they host Master's best cores, the LOTO locks are as safe as they can be, so when it comes to a court case over a wrongful death because someone else removed another worker's LOTO, (These are often supposedly "One Lock, One Key" to ensure no one else CAN remove the LOTO without destroying it)the insurance company gets to say the LOTO was not picked opened and MUST have either been removed with the key, or by a person intent on murder. Either way, not Master's fault, not the insurance company's fault, and not the employer's fault. Wanna know why something stupid is happening? Follow the money. Always....you know that; you're a lawyer!

Hi Bosnianbill. So at my job we were in the works of purchasing our locksmiths company before we had financial issues and I already did a lot of learning by replacing and rekeying locks but never really learned how to pick but when it was in the talks of buying him out I got a pick set n would always rake with a decent amount of success and since that deal fell through and the opportunity came up where our old locksmith needed someone to handle business while he’s on his trips I decided that this was something I really want to learn and have been watching you and the lockpickinglawyers videos for the past 2 months and I got a cheap amazon and wish set (Amazon was $12 wish was $8) and when I got the sets they were relatively the same the one from wish was kinda rough but after fair use they are same in terms of feel. We use a lot of master locks at work and we have a bunch that we don’t have they keys for (if you saw our key trays which are literally hundreds and with no labels you wouldn’t want to try every key and me just trying to pick them which some were rated 7-9 on master locks ratings I was able to pick (actually picking by feel because I really want to learn the craft) I was able to pick over 40 locks within a week. (Which I now use as my practice locks) we also have some American locks which I have on my keychain which I would love to send a picture of I have 87 keys on my key rings which I use for work and if my set doesn’t open it then I know no one at work has the key and I would have to resort to looking in the bins. My question is what recommendations do you have to be a good learners but also challenging lock where I can learn how to feel security pins and how to handle them?

I purchased one of these from Home Depot a few weeks ago. Busted out the city rake and I was in within seconds. Tex Patriot it would be tougher to pick, but the way the pin chambers in the plug are countersunk means that you have a much greater margin of error when manipulating the pins. The locks are made that way to allow for sloppier tolerances with pins and keys, but this also makes them easy to pick.

It's really sad because their housings are usually fantastic. Higher end masterlocks hold up wonderfully against most criminals who would just try to cut the lock or shim it. The housings are usually top of the line. But get one novice with a rake, and they're done for. They could easily even get away with charging ~20$ more for the kind of inner workings you'd find for a 20$ lock from another high end lock company, and you'd have an amazing piece of work. I just feel like someone higher up has to realize this at some point.

After watching Bosnianbill and LockPickingLawyer's videos on picking Master Lock LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) padlocks and how good the 6 pinned core is, and then watching Wayne Winton's video on how extremely difficult it was to cut the 930 (He had to use a bolt cutter with a ratchet strap), I find that destroying a LOTO and installing the core in the 930 is still cheap enough to be one of the least expensive and tough locks for the money. The $23.00 930 is a really really tough lock to cut. Just swap the core out from a $9.00 LOTO.

The newer production ones now come with all spool driver pins. However they are not much better as I can still pick them rather quickly and i am a very inexperienced picker, also some of them still rake open easily even with the new security pins. Not to mention they still have that large nut that can be unscrewed with pliers once the rubber piece is removed. You can always count on master to make sure there is at least one or two ways to quickly defeat their locks with little to no skill so that if you lose your key or are a criminal you will never be locked out lmao.

Everything else across the Internet is fine for me. Other people in the comments are having this issue too. What's going on? [EDIT] It only loaded to 3:58 minutes... All righty. Finished loading the last 30 seconds while I was watching. Yes, I actually raked my MasterLock No. 3 open 141 times while waiting for this video to load on my high-speed Internet (at 480p, btw, because 720 was just unplayable). I kind of cheated though. Not only did I not close the lock between rakes (doesn't have to be closed to engage the lock, I merely reset the key position) but I also have in muscle memory the exact position my Southord W rake (thanks for the suggestion, Bill!) needs to be in to open this particular lock without actually raking back and forth; just like a key. MasterLocks make you look like a freakin magician. Aside from the horrendous throttling - or whatever's going on with this load time - the audio compressor and/or limiter you're using, Bill, combined with whatever background noise was in this video (guessing AC) caused for some drastic dropouts in sound between sentences and other sound peaks. You definitely should experiment more with base room levels so it's just not picking up that AC at all; even when you're talking. If that's a no-go then you can make a box to insulate the sound of the blowing air. It's essentially an insulated S-shape the air travels and expands through; kills vent hiss on even the toughest blowers in my experience.
@bosnianbill6 жыл бұрын
Tophie Sorry for all the problems you had loading and I appreciate you sticking with it to finally watch the video. I have nothing to do with the download streaming from KZbin, but I checked this on my laptop, iPad, and Android phone and it downloaded with no problem. I even downloaded it over the LTE network with good download speeds. It appears the problem is with your ISP provider or phone company, not YT. The video is fairly compact and was processed as I process all videos - nothing out of the ordinary. Could it be that your provider has speed limited you? I'd recommend you re-boot your phone and re-try if you run into this problem again.

Bosnianbill I'm with Cox... You know, the cable company whose name is more than just a coincidence? Of course you don't throttle your own videos; that'd be ridiculous. I just wanted to add my name to the list of people who were having trouble with this one video (which loads perfectly fine now, even in HD). Also, it was fun. I haven't touched my No. 3 in a couple of months. When I had to wait to watch you rake yours open I decided to pull mine out and do the same. Lastly, the annoyance wasn't that I had to wait, it's that this was literally the only thing on the Internet that wasn't behaving as expected. I'm not sure how or why this happened, but I neither like nor trust it...

When I sell padlocks, each client gets a true KD number we randomize when rekeying EVERY American and Master PRoSeries lock we sell. You mention lack of spools and serrations and a 6th pin.... the 6230 has all that, and a MUCH better tolerance keyway. Bill what would you recommend for a chain and padlock to secure a motorcycle?
@bosnianbill6 жыл бұрын
First, I'd recommend some kind of disablement mechanism. Second, I'd recommend some kind of tracker. Third, park you bike in a secure area with physical and/or video surveillance. Last comes the lock and chain. Grab an Abloy disc detainer with a shielded shackle. For a chain, look at the Peweg with a 12mm thickness. Understand tho, that the chain will only resist a die grinder attack for roughly 4 minutes. After that, your bike is gone. So, you objective is to make your bike a less attractive target than the OTHER bikes parked nearby... Sad but true. I have a friend with an older Harley and lives in a nearby apartment complex. To protect his bike against theft, he wheels it through the double glass door into his living room at night. Hey, whatever works.

I bought some really cheap from ebay. 2 of them can be opened with a paper clip as tention tool and some hits with the bare hand to the not pinned side, 3 more can be raked really easy but one has resisted everything I tried so far... Maybe I got the one in a million secure Master xD Btw you can really easy reassemble these rubber seals, if you put them in the fridge for about 30 minutes :)
@GrumpyIan6 жыл бұрын
Long story short, if you're buying a masterlock you buy their lockout/tagout lock and this one and you swap cores.

I recently ordered some sparrows tensioners. And they’re too large for any master lock I’ve got. Can’t get them in just about any key way. Is that normal? Do I need to sand them down?

Hi, after watching this video, I bought the lock on Ama*** in Europe. Here it's called "Excel" (instead of Magnum). M930EURDLH. Looks as great and beefy as it is easy to pick. Sadly, my one has two shallow cuts on 1 and 2 and deeper ones on 3 to 5. Once I got the binding order, I can now open it reliably within half a minute (SPP). Great show effect, opening a 30+ Euro lock in 30- seconds. By the way, that little key pouch on the packaging, hiding the bitting from the front but fully exposing it from the rear... Same in the US?

Yep, identical junky packaging.

Enjoy your videos very much. Been watching and learning from you for years, albeit slowly. Based upon your low opinion of Master locks do you believe there is any training value in picking them? Thank you for your tireless teaching, innovation and time you put into your channel!
@deeknhays6 жыл бұрын
You got a junk lock then. Mine came with a couple spools and a serrated driver pins. Granted it wasn't too hard to get in. I used a city rake then spp'd the last pin that didn't set

Bill, have Mastercrock ever been in touch with you? Or has anyone ever fwd one of Bill's videos to them and had a response? I would be embarrassed if I were the CEO of these jokers.
@bosnianbill6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I heard from them a few years ago when one of their lawyers threatened to sue me if I didn’t take down a video (Picking under Stress). I refused and after a couple more threats, never heard from them again.

At least the core can be replaced with something more suitable. That black retaining nut though, is it plastic or steel?
@bosnianbill6 жыл бұрын
It is case hardened steel, pretty tough stuff. Still, it is the weak link in the system.

Master Lock 10 in 10 seconds. All standard pins? WTF? Like really!!! YA, 1000% JUNK.
@soulseek26 жыл бұрын
i really don't understand their philosophy.. i mean they actually do make really nice quality locks, apart from the locking part. it's not like it would be twice as expensive to get some security pins in there. just... why...

And while we are on the subject of junk. I just bought a Master lock Magnum M50xkad with a security rating of 8 and racked it open in 30s econds. Then I spp’d it in a minute. And I’m not that good of a picker yet. I could not believe it.

Been a long time but almost my whole tool chest is full of Wera stuff, from screwdrivers to wrenches (Joker), to Socket sets. Nothing but the best! I bought it all from either eBay or Amazon, mostly the latter.

I see comments on video and audio problems -- Mr. Bill - I have NEVER ever had any problems with video or audio -- I must admit I don't listen through my Studio Monitors, but your videos ALWAYS sound just fine (maybe a little quiet or variable sometimes in terms of audio levels)

There is something wrong with this video or it is being throttled. I can view other channel videos and your latest madbob video without any issues. Keeps buffering even when set at the lowest resolution.

Bill, I have this exact same lock I got on eBay some time ago. Was wondering how you fixed this lock? Didn't see anything else from you on it. I'm guessing you could re-pin it with american lock pins? But I agree the cylinder looks pretty sloppy. Did you find a replacement cylinder? I took an American cylinder and tried it in the lock , it fit but the engagement end is different and I couldn't seem to make it work? I know on American locks I put a spring and top pin in the last cylinder and a #4 pin and it gives you 6 pin security with a 5 pin bitted key. Ironically the exact same pin on Kwikset does the same thing, if you have a 6 pin cylinder. Worked like a charm on my Abus 83/45. Also I'm wondering do the master locks suffer the same problem as the American locks with the Peterson cylinder bypass tool? Sure looks like it would? Speaking of those wafers that you put in up to 3 of them to secure American locks, do you have a source to obtain them? Only ones I found were on eBay and they were $5.00 for a bag of 10. Seems kind of expensive. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

So, after I sent this yesterday, I decided to try my hand at picking this thing. Note I am probably the worlds worst lock picker lol. I wouldn't have much of a career as a burglar..... But any way it took me maybe 30 seconds to rake pick it lol. Wow if the world all used Master locks, i would have a thriving career as a burglar lol. Anyway all kidding aside it's pretty sad. The lock is build like a brick Shit house. And the core is a mess, I can't even imagine re-pinning it with spools and serrated pins is going to help much? Is there a better cylinder that can be put in this thing? American lock cylinders don't seem to work or I could make mine anyway? It's really too bad this lock would be awesome if it had some really secure core in it.

Do we ever get tired of making fun of Masterlock? Wait, no. No we don't. Seriously though, if they take that model and put the core from their plastic LOTO locks in it it'd be a pretty good lock. I still will never understand why Master only uses the only decent core they make in a plastic body.

With all the "Picking" Bill had done on Master Lock over the years you would think someone there would have taken all the free advice he has given them by now ... besides just improving the marketing on the packaging for the unknowing.

You know, it's funny. I've been watching Bill's vids for years. A few years back, I noticed that the padlock on the garage door control box was missing/stolen (I think I know what really happened to it but I won't elaborate here). So I went to a local hardware store and bought a Master padlock (a dial one with a key that lets you change the code). It's piss-weak. I tested it a few times. The code I selected doesn't work properly but you can open it with a few tries. Anyway, it hasn't been stolen yet. :)

I got to say the intro on this video is one of your classicist and makes your channel look snazzy Oh and All of those alphabet soup just means that with out to key to open the lock you aren't going remove the lock from the impenetrable Chinese plastic packing material. Next let's see the LOCKPICKINGLAWYER do destructive force opening video using his RAMSET GUN.👍
