Andy here, and today we're going over the Boss AC-3 Acoustic Simulator. This pedal let's you transform any electric into an acoustic guitar with the help of Boss COSM technology. Along with 4 natural sounding acoustic models, the Boss Acoustic Simulator lets you shape the booming bottom with the Body control and the bright, percussive end via the Top control. Plus, built in Boss reverb adds a more spacious environment and sense of realism to the AC-3's acoustic tones. The Boss AC-3 Acoustic Simulator can also tackle a number of stage or studio configurations by using the line out for sending to a PA/mixer, soundcard or separate amp while a dedicated guitar amp output preserves your guitar's natural tone.

What happens if you plug this into an acoustic guitar? Does it get even more acoustic? Or maybe it cancels the acousticness of the acoustic guitar and it starts sounding like an electric guitar? Someone try it please, I NEED to know.

I don't see why people rip on Boss.... I play on Boss, and I think they sound as good or better than a lot of other pedals on the market

I've tried it on bass guitar, and no, it doesn't sound like an acoustic bass, but it does give it a nice, natural woody tone, which I enjoyed a lot. But nothing like an acoustic bass.

My thing is, if I would've heard this on a record without having known it was a simulator, I would've thought it was an acoustic guitar. The facility of switching between the AC-3 & other pedals is a plus, thats why I bought it :D

Alright I'm an acoustic lover so I've always been skeptical of these pedals. But when Andy kicked in the piezo mode for the dobro sound I was buying in!

IMO the only pedal/effect boss left out of their ME-70 multi-pedal, i'd easily switch the defretter or slow gear on that thing for a sweet AC-3 effect.

The acoustic sound was through the "line out" output. When the pedal is off the signal goes through the "g.amp out" output.

I don't know, man, check out PRS's P22, that piezo pickup is incredible. Granted, its very utilitarian, but still awesome in every sense of the word!

I can still feel the twang of the Strat. Maybe this is something good for one to use it for just a while within a song for some acoustic guitar sound without switching guitar.

Love the opening riff. I believe it was Skid Row's I Remember You. I have the AC-2. It was good when it came out. But I have the Roland Cube60. The Roland has a pretty good acoustic preset. The AC-2 has lost it's "soul". The other riff I recognize was GNR'S Patience.

Bear in mind that this may sound better without the Pre-Amp of your amp. For example, I use a POD HD500 in the Combo Power Amp of a Blues Deluxe Reissue, and I'm sure that using a Direct Line FROM THE POWER AMP (for those who don't know, this bypasses the pre-amp) will achieve better results with such a pedal.

@aznjt No. The reason you couldn't hear the Power Stack was because I'm guessing when the AC-3 is engaged with a cable in the line out it's going to wherever you have that line out plugged into, this case being PGS's sound card. The Power Stack was on the whole time but the signal was going to the sound card, when he turned the AC-3 off the signal went right to the power stack and then to the amplifier. If something is plugged into the line out it will only play through that when engaged.

Quick question; if I wanted to get the most natural acoustic sound possible, would it be best to use humbuckers or single coils? And neck, bridge or middle position? I love the idea of being able to leave my acoustic at home, since I only use it on one or two songs in a gig. As always, your videos are the best around. Thanks!

Hey Andy, thanks for all the cool demos. I've been using you guys lately and great prices and fast shipping. with the boss AC3 can you run both line and guitar out signals together to get the electric and acoustic flavors at the same time. I understand when you engauge the line out function it silences the guitar out signal. would be nice to have a blend.

Or a microphone, or a high quality contact microphone pickup. Piezo pickups tend to sound very dry and, more importantly, pretty fake. They don't reproduce the acoustic sound very well.

It's not an exact simulation, but it's more than adequate for live purposes. Even for recording, it might sound fine tweaked into the mix as a background instrument. To be fair, this pedal sounds better in some of the other videos, I wonder if they recorded this clip with a humbucking pickup - the AC-3 sounds much, much more authentic when used with single-coils. It sounds much better on the "Boss Sound Check Video," where they certainly use a single-coil pickup.

Greetings, this AC-3 seems to be very nice. I'd like to ask a thing about it. I'm playing small cafes and pubs with my acoustic guitar plugged in acoustic amp Marshall AD50D, which is very good, 'cause I can plug a microphone to the second microphone channel and I can play and sing the whole gig with it. But I have hollowbody electric guitar that I would like to use on a stage too. So my question is, would AC3 work with a hollowbody electric guitar plugged into acoustic Marshall AS50D? thanx
