Boss BD-2 & Boss SD-1 - are these the only two Drive pedals you need?

Two of my favourite overdrive pedals the Boss BD-2 & SD-1 are affordable classics and readily available across the planet. The question here is: are these the only drive pedals you'll ever need? I've approached it from the point of view that the Blues Driver is a great core tone and the SD-1, with it's mid hump, is great as a boost or for using it's mid hump to make solos stand out more. It can also tighten up a dirty amp.
If you are looking to get into overdrive pedals and are not sure where to start this is as good a place as any

Great pedals. The SD gives some mid range bump which complements the Blues Driver really well. Great for solo lifts etc.

OD3 is also a favourite.It's my Number 1 fave. The OD Turbo Overdrives from further back still have their individual flavours too.

OD-3 is arguably Boss's best drive pedal. It's fet based and a lot smoother than the Blues Driver

The Waza version does seem to be a better pedal. The buffer alone is superior. As I always say about Boss pedals, there are some bargains out there on the second hand market. I'm kinda seeing this pedal more than any other on people's pedalboards as it's so wide ranging as you say. You can get towards metal tones when cranked!

I have both although my BD is the waza craft version, I love the SD but the BD doesn't sound great through my Marshall DSL20 so maybe stacking them will solve that!

The SD will be great with the Marshall as it will tighten up the amp and is also a great solo boost. I used one with a jcm 800 for years

My only ever issue with Boss are their buffers. But if you are only using a couple it's not an issue. You can pick these up cheap virtually anywhere making them an even bigger bargain

@@bryanclarke1927 I actually like the fact they are buffered when using them live and with long cables but yeah get what you are saying, I have 6 of them on my board but with loops so it's really 3 at any given time unless the buffering is affecting the chain even when the loop is not engaged (not aware if it is so)

The BD-2 and an EQ pedal are the only two pedals you need for every flavour of dirt.

@@bobcoleman9045 The modern boss GE-7 pedal doesn't seem to add a lot of noise (I use one at the end of my chain for fine tweaking to the venue)

On their own hard to judge. One should also consider guitar (hb/sc) as the amp and amount of gain on tap. SD-1/BD-2/OD-3 are classics for a good reason. The OD-3 was a bit under the radar but gained popularity.

I love running the Sd1 into the Bd2. I also run a pedal pawn fuzz in front of the chain… now I want a Friedman be-od and a clean boost 😂 guess you really can’t have enough drive pedals

I have both but the BD has a Monte Allums kit in it. Great pedal. Tube screamer style pedals too thin sounding to me. I had a TS 808 but sold it as the SD 1 is better to me but still not a massive fan. Definitely better with a Humbucker guitar though.

Would you swap either of these out for the OD-3 when stacking 2 pedals? I have all 3 and have tried switching the BD-2 for the OD-3 with the SD-1 boosting either. I kind of liked both options :o Have you tried and what are your thoughts? I'm running into a clean fender pro reverb. Cheers for a great video 👍🏻

I've just posted a video on the OD-3 & SD-1 combination and given my thoughts. I would always pair one or the other with the SD-1 as that is a mid hump pedal great for boosting solos etc.
