Sweetwater's Guitars and Gear, Vol. 126
In this episode of Guitars and Gear, Mitch puts the BOSS ES-8 effects switching system to the test. The ES-8 gives you amazing control over your pedal collection, allowing you to re-configure the order of your effects, switch multiple effects on and off simultaneously, choose between serial and parallel effects chains, and much more.
The BOSS ES-8 is relatively simple to set up: connect up to eight guitar effects pedals up to the individual loops, connect expression and volume pedals, your tuner pedal and even MIDI, and you're ready to start. Using the ES-8 in manual mode, each of the eight numbered footswitches turn the specified effects loop on or off - you can freely configure the order of the effects loops with a few button presses. The ES-8 also has a Memory mode that allows you to save and recall preset patch layouts, so you can completely re-configure your effects routing with one stomp.
There are a lot of cool things the ES-8 lets you do besides configure your pedal routing. You can set footswitches to be momentary instead of latching for creative effects use. Stereo outputs make it easy to hook up a stereo amp rig, and dual guitar inputs allow you to connect two instruments. The ES-8 can pass Tap Tempo to pedals that accept it, and a handy mute switch makes it easy to silence your rig. In all, the ES-8 is a capable control center for your pedalboard.
Once you've hooked up your pedals to the BOSS ES-8 switcher, you'll probably never want to gig without it. You'll be able to toggle multiple effects simultaneously without tap dancing, and you can instantly change the order of your effects without touching any cables. If you use more than a couple pedals in your guitar rig, you'll definitely want to check out the BOSS ES-8. Thanks for watching!

People, I swear... This is an unbelievably well-done video. How else can you put so much information in 15 minutes? And guess what? We have this magical button that can replay parts of a video at any time. It’s a miracle. This is some of the finest presenting I’ve ever seen, and the mastery of the product to be able to present this clearly in such short time is amazing. Well, well done

I had to stop and say Mitch Gallagher is one of the best reviewers out there! He was born for this stuff. He speaks well, knows the specimen inside out. He's very thorough, but very concise, and always plays exactly the right thing for what he's describing. Kudos to him as the King of all Reviewers ever!!

Looks like a great unit. However Boss should come up with a system for analog pedals that can be placed in a rack system and plugged into a multi input part then controlled by the board on stage maybe with an integrated midi cable. Because with this and most setups, you still need to have all pedals and pedal board on stage. We need a midi like setup for analog pedals.

Hi, Great review of the Boss ES8. Did I hear you say you could adjust the individual volume level of each loop/patch? I couldn't see that option.. Also if I use a dual Volume/Exp pedal can I program the unit to use either volume or expression independently? De activate the volume when i want to use the expression?

Looks like a really well thought out unit. It's kind of like a HD500X using real pedals and amps. I really like that the trails don't cut off when you switch things; that's a feature that the 500X lacks. This seems like a great solution for people who own a bunch of pedals. Great review as well; IMHO, Mitch is the best gear reviewer in the music industry, period.

Hi. Thanks for the video. Maybe you can help me with a few questions. I'm a guitar player and singer in a portuguese band. As i sing and play at the same time it's very uncomfortable to be tapdancing. Some years ago i bought a Mooer L6 switcher. For the price i can't really complaint about it (the main problem is this kind of delay when you press the buttons, the sound kind of fades in). I've been using it to control my modulation pedals live, but i want to be able to control all pedals (dis, drive, boost, etc). This happens because i use my modulation in the fx loop of the amp and the other pedals in the front inside of the BOSS NS2 loop. My question is if using the boss es 8 four cable method feature i can route the pedals i want to the front and to the fx loop "separating" them but still using in the same loop system. Other thing i would like to know is how the boss NS2 loop would work in a foot switcher, i mean how can i still be using the noise surpressor loop or how can i use it still using a switcher. As i'm thinking of switching to another switcher, i would like to ask some of good choices for me besides the ES-8. What exact foot switchers can i use to route pedals to the fx loop and to the front of the pedal. Thank you.

Thanks for the video. I would like to ask the following question: Basically, effects like reverbs or delays are connected into the effects loop of an amp. From experience, I've noticed that with amps like the Marshall SC20C, for example, it makes a very big difference whether a reverb is connected to the amp's effects loop or directly to the input. If I understand correctly, the Boss ES-8 goes directly into the amp's input - how does that affect such effects as reverbs or delays? And how about placing such effects directly after the Effects Loop of the ES-8 and plugging into the input of the amp - does the ES-8 have any affect on that? Thank you a lot in advance for your help!

I have one of these ES-8's and the power and flexability of it are wonderful! BUT I have a ground/buzz/noise issue when using the 'FOUR Cable Method" I have a custom build tube amp that is whisper quiet for high gain metal, top notch Planet Waves cables, and a bundle of pedals. If I unplug any of the Vol/Loop cables or the amp lead itself the ground goes away. I have tried pretty much every trouble shooting trick out there to no availe. should I be using balanced cables for the loop? should I get an "HE-2" it seems that this FCM should be able to work for players with our this buzz/noise routine? any help would be awesome!

My question is... yes, so it can send out tap tempo and expression signals to pedals that accept that information-BUT how many at once? Let's say you have three pedals ALL looking for temp info (ex: chorus speed, delay rate, reverb reflections); wouldn't you therefore need THREE cables going out to those three pedals? Can the EX-8 somehow accommodate that? Is there such a thing as a "1-into-3 super-splitter" cable etc? (And I'm also guessing that, IF all three pedals utilize MIDI, then they _could_ all be set to receive the one tempo command which I'm _assuming_ the ES-8 could somehow be set up to send.). NOTE: I do not yet own the ES-8, only imagining the possibilities and entirely open to correction. Thx!

As long as I've played guitar 25yrs... I've never had or considered a switcher. I run a traditional stomp box setup, into a M13, into Fx loop of my amp. My question is can a "switcher" recall different settings/dials from your analogue pedals, for each preset? Ex: for one I have my Earthquaker Palisades set to OD mode low gain, then on another switcher preset have it set to palisades fuzz heavy gain? Or can it not do that, and when the switcher calls up that pedal it's stuck to whatever dials you have it on? What about a digital pedal, like a HX stomp? can you have the switcher call up different fx and settings from the Stomp, and assign them to different presets on the switcher?

I have a question about the ES-8, which I don't seem to be able to find an answer for in Roland's knowledge base. Let's assume I have two amps - one clean and one dirty. And I have some fx on my board (for this purpose, let's just talk about one delay pedal), that I want to run into both amps. Now, I want to know if the same pedal can be run into the fx loop of the dirty amp, and into the front end of the clean amp, using the ES-8. Suppose preset 1 has the clean amp, I want the delay running into the front end, and preset 2 has the dirty amp, with the SAME delay pedal running into its fx loop. Is this possible? And then when I toggle between preset 1 and 2, the output changes to the corresponding amp, along with the delay pedal's connections.

Hello there, thanks for this video. Do you know if you can send a midi out from let's say an Ableton session on click track to automatically switch from preset to preset during a song? So that Ableton sends midi signals to the ES8 to tell it to switch for one preset to another?
@sweetwater
@sweetwater 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Vincent. Thanks for the question. This is a possibility, as long as you have the proper ins and outs. You will need a midi interface with at least midi out. Internally, you will set up a midi track to launch and adjust the output to control the ES-8. You will need the ES-8 MIDI control command and use Ableton to send that command to the ES-8. You will have to launch the clip in order to change the patch. Here is a video that we have that will help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iV6mo36mYqeIlaM Please give me a call if you have any other questions. Ok, this from the Roland site entry on my ES-5 (the ES-8 *should* do the same) "The ES-5 turns any amp and pedalboard into one cohesive unit, with the added ability to connect it to an amp’s channel switching or any other footswitch that uses a standard 1/4″ TRS connection. Going from the Blues Driver with the H9 with a delay, with the amp on clean with no reverb, to the lead sound of the Peavy, reverb off, with the chorus on, was done in the touch of one button."

Can i use a dual expression pedal for two different pedals; or one channel for total pedal volume control. the manual on the es-8 has two exp in; two outs plug 4 control. NOT CLEAR IF th cv outs and exp out is dedicated to what its plugged into ! Why not have expression inputs be assigned to the different pedals that support exp. pedals; but fed thru the es-8 rather than the exp input on each specific pedal. the exp pedal does different thinks to my pitchfork vs tremelo box, perhaps a volume control. But the ES-8 does not seem to have that now; only two exp out; vs being able to supply Qty-8; outputs if you had 8 pedals to support that. OK. next version of the ES--8A !! You Could feed thru to control all 8 pedals ( then software editable) or add 8 Exp/cv cabled outputs.

I have contacted Boss and Marshall about this pedal as I have a TSL602 Amp. I understood that this could be used to switch amp channels along with setting which pedals are connected at the same time. Both have come back to say that there is no way to switch amp channels, so this looper is pretty much useless unless I want to use dirt pedals instead of my amps drive channels. £500 well spent....hmmm? Hope this helps anyone else who is thinking about this.

OK, according to Roland, "The ES-5 turns any amp and pedalboard into one cohesive unit, with the added ability to connect it to an amp’s channel switching or any other footswitch that uses a standard 1/4″ TRS connection" Surely the ES-8 is the same?
@thesphericalguy9018

For anyone reading this, both the ES-5 and ES-8 can change amp channels so long as the amp uses standard 1/4" TRS connections. If they use other connectors like DIN, sometimes a special cable can be built to make switching possible from the Boss units. Worst case scenario it's not possible at all and you're stuck using the footswitch that came with the amp. Isn't it great that every company does things differently with no standards whatsoever? I hate this industry sometimes

I can change anything on my JVM410HJS head using the ES-8 MIDI out: channel, channel color, noise gate, master, and mid-shift for example. This works perfectly. And if your amp is not MIDI but has some input jacks to monitor it from one or several footswitch(es) then you can use the ES-8 output controls: there are 3 of them, with 2 controls per jack i.e. 6 amp parameters potentially monitored from your ES-8.

There would be nothing stopping you here from (for example) putting your 2-3 fuzz stomps all into ONE "fuzz stomp" loop; then, before each song etc., manually activate whichever fuzz(es) you'd want on, so that when the time comes to activate your "fuzz stomp" patch, it's ready to go with the specific fuzz stomp you'd just pre-selected. Hope that's clear. Of course, you couldn't switch the actual individual fuzzes via separate patch changes in this way (unless you dedicate one fuzz to each loop), but still, this is one approach to using more than 8 pedals. Hope this helps.

Help please! I've probably missed an easy explanation of how to do this, but basically I'm confused about how this can run pedals through the front of my amp and it's effects loop. I'd like to know as I'm really interested in getting one of these. Here's my scenario... I've got a number of pedals that I run through the front of my amp (wah, overdrive, etc) and also a few pedals that I run through my amp's effects loop (delay, chorus, etc.), like most guitarists typically do... In this demo, I'm assuming that all of the pedals that he is running in the loops of the ES-8 are going through the front of his amp(s), with none of them running into the effects loop. So here's my big question: How would I be able to put my Overdrive, Wah and Distortion pedals in loops 1-3 (respectively) of the ES-8, but with my Chorus, Delay and Phaser going into loops 4-6 with the latter 3 somehow going through the effects loop of my amp? How would I do that?
@ozkansafak
@ozkansafak 8 жыл бұрын
+Elliot Stent You buy two ES-8s one for front of the amp one for the effects loop of the amp and then operate them separately. Not an ideal solution nor inexpensive.

+Elliot Stent It's done using the 4 cable method. You don't need two units...lol it's described on Boss's website. It's very easy and part of the design:)
@mark7166

+Elliot Stent Just route the amp into the Volume Insert loop. Then you put your pedals in the other loops. Internally, the ES-8 allows you to virtually re-route the effects so you can put them anywhere in the signal path. That way, you can have your Chorus/Delay stuff in front of the amp or in the loop, based on preset.

Hey! I have a DD-500 and a RV-500. Can you change the presets on the ES-8 to control the DD-500 presets? (Example: When setting up your preset 1 on your Boss ES-8, does it allow you to to control which preset on the DD-500 it will use?)
@larryh.3173
@larryh.3173 3 жыл бұрын
@@iequalrandomness I'd be VERY surprised if it didn't. I would _imagine_ that you'd set up the DD and RV to receive on different MIDI channels, then from the ES-8, send MIDI out to the DD, then also with a MIDI Thru cable over to the RV. Then... set the ES-8 (within the patch) to send out on those two MIDI channels, complete with seperate preset change commands that each external unit would respond to. (Ex. MIDI Ch. 1, program change #22 to the DD + MIDI Ch 2, program change #60 to the RV.) Make sense? (NOTE: I do NOT own the ES-8 yet but this seems a logical expectation given its purported capabilities. And I am _totally_ open and willing to be corrected here.)

Hello, Clayton. Thank you for the question. You are only able to use Stereo S/R 8 as one independent mono send/return or one independent stereo return. Page 2 and page 12 in the manual gave me a pretty solid explanation of how to set that. Please give me a call if I can help answer and more questions. Great device but I'll pass. I just played with my board. 2 taps and my OD + Fuzz are on. My Pitch Shifter and Flanger are set to Temporary mode so I can simply hold the pedal down for as long as I need the effect and release to disengage. I don't need to spend more $$$$ and rearrange my board just to save a few taps!
@mattchurchify
@mattchurchify 4 жыл бұрын
That's perfectly fine if its your solution. A small, tight board has lots of advantages! But, trying to say this will just "save a few taps" is obviously a giant understatement. You can change the order of your pedals in the signal chain, keep unused pedals completely out of the chain, and also set up, say, 6 different tonal palettes that, all using different pedal orders, fit every tone you need for a whole set. Thatd save 20+ steps and rearranging your pedalboard.

Daniele De Santis what's better quality about it? it's only $50 less (used, if we're talking new the MK IV is $50 more) and the only thing extra i see that it has is one additional loop. It offers none of the routing flexibility the es 8 does which is easily worth the extra $50. There's also additional es 8 features not detailed here such as an internal LFO that can be used to control parameters that an expression pedal would normally control.

Huge fail with the cryptic UI and ridiculously huge manual. I'd have gladly paid another 20-50 bucks for bluetooth app control. That display is plain awful. As it is, it's like the alesis andromeda of switchers - it can do sooo much, but it belongs in another decade.
