I don't know if others can relate to this, but while I can listen to a guitarist alone and be impressed, or be able to appreciate certain elements, I don't enjoy just listening to it, for any length of time. However, I not only enjoyed this, but found it highly listenable. I was laying here tired, started the video, and went on listening to it in the background, while doing other things, such as reading articles, and checking things on social media. And kept forgetting what was playing. It was soothing and enjoyable sounds in the background. I'm sure the amp is great, but it isn't the amp that accomplished this. I wish I could play like that. Amazing.

Yeah he's, "the real world" guitarist review guy. He's not technically perfect. But his tones sound good WITH A BAND!!! That's the most important I get from his channel. I used to do a lot of shredding, I mean I was almost at paul Gilbert racer x days levels. But in THE BANDS I WAS PLAYING IN. We played go-go(jam band funk style, from Washington dc), old and new r&b,classic rock Ala hendrix, mountain, cream. As well as originals. This was about 15 yrs ago. My keyboard player whom was from DC and a dear friend of mine. Told me that I had to find a tone fit for the band. Which resulted in less distortion and good power amp gain which is cleaner. I got tones very similar to Dave's. More along the lines of johñ Scofield, "jolene". So yeah Dave gets,"gigging " tones. Because let us guitar players remember IT'S ABOUT THE AUDIENCE ENJOYING THE BAND... peace party ppl,see ya later

It was also FAR more expensive but you know what? WE WERE GRATEFUL! Yeah, I know, I sound like a ranting old "boomer".

Nice playing Dave!! So awesome to see how the music is comforting for you when you play it. For us Nero-Atypicals (Those of us with Autism, ADHD, etc) it can be very hard for us to feel normal and comfortable, and this can stress us out greatly. I was lucky, for my 50th birthday this last January, my family got me a Boss Katana-Air (KTN-AIR). It is all the guitar amp I could every want. Since I don't gig, I don't need an amp to get that loud. Use Dave Simpson's, The Studio Rats. and Juca Nery's suggestions for setting up the Katana, and I am good to go. If I need a louder amp, I can always plug the Boss Katana Air or my Boss Pocket GT into a larger amp and go from there. Small amps are the way to go these days if you ask me. I have learned so much on how to get the sound I want out of an amp since I got the Boss Katana-Air. Even though I basically had the same capabilities with my Boss Pocket GT and my Roland Micro Cube (Red color), the Boss Katana Air is set up more like a traditional amp with a 3 band eq vs just the tone knob on the Roland Micro Cube. What I really want to get is Thomas Blug's Bluguitar Amp 1 Mercury Edition, that amp looks amazing, small amps and pedal amps are the way to go. I might just get a Quilter Power amp to go along with my Boss Katana-Air and Boss Pocket GT. I am really glad I got the Boss FS-1-WL wireless/bluetooth footsiwitch, it works with both the Katana-Air and the Pocket GT, and I should be able to use it with my Amp-Sim on my Linux laptop with Carla, NAM and Guitarix. Need to take a week and figure it out, the creator of Guitarix is very active on the Linux Musicians Forum. The Boss FS-1-WL not only gives you three footswitches by itself, you can add an expression pedal to act as a wah or a volume pedal, and you can add an external 2 switch pedal also, so you have 5 footswitchs and a wah/volume pedal, which makes the Pocket GT and the Katana Air a way more usable item. John Nathan Cordy even gigged with the Boss Katana GO, which has similar capabilties and functions pretty much like the Katana Air or the Pocket GT.

Hi Dave, just watched this and was impressed by the voicing, and I understand how you can get lost in the moment! I do some days when just finding my way around the fretboard,3 or 4 hours no problem, hands hate me after tho(arthritis!)but I rest overnight and maybe go again later in the day. I know it's cheeky but I watch and listen closely to snippets of your playing and try to insert them into my twangy noise to improve and try different things, some days I'll play to or three notes and it'll remind me of something I've heard and then use it to practice with and then add to. This is all for my fun as I'm in no way to public playing I just enjoy the thrill of maybe making a pleasant bit of noise that pushes me to add more,I've found lately I'm using a lot of neck pickup, just love the creamy tones I can get. Also I'm beating a dean Evo into submission as it was a banana necked g string machine head missing 20 quid practice thing, like you I find a 'new' instrument will show you secrets it has already learned! I have to admit, I've actually never been a fan of the sound of Katanas, but this is one of the first videos that has caught my ear. There must be something to that new speaker. I always thought the sound I was hoping for with them could perhaps be a speaker change away. Who knew, eh??? Kinda makes me want to try one of the new Gen 3s out at my local shop. Sounds like you were channeling Michael Chapman a bit toward the beginning of your acoustic demo. 😉 I also enjoyed the music you played using your Columbus ES-guitar a great deal. OMG! That little amp sounds 18 million times better than any other combo amp I’ve ever heard. Since you did the unboxing video I’ve been looking into this amp and decided to sell the amp I have and buy one of these. I saw that it has a ‘.5’ W setting. Is that like an attenuator? I need to keep the noise down where I live and turning the sound down would be helpful. When you played the last Les Paul, I think it was a Vintage or something but it sounded like 60s music 🎵 at all the great venues in New York and San Francisco. Can’t believe all those sounds came out of that amp. It sounded amazing. Thanks for the demo. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵🩷

Nice playing there Dave, sweet! I'm looking into this amp, but probably the EX version of this amp in case I decide on a footswitch later on, and for its apparent upgraded speaker. Like I mentioned before, it was tough to sell my Blackstar Silverline Special 50, but it really lacked the bang for the bucks where I've been watching reviews on this Gen 3 Katana, and love some of the Tube Screamer settings you can download from the community using the Boss software. It has more features like the power to change the wattage, better and more varied voicings, and the ability to change those voicings; I feel it is pretty unlimited. I just couldn't get anything I liked out of the Silverline except a slight variation of either the previous voicing, or the next (For example, Super crunch wasn't all that different than the OD1 when gain was pushed..), not to mention no looping for FX, and if I recall, no foot switch support. Maybe that's why the Silverline model was discontinued? I feel like Blackstar need to revamp their voicings. Even the ID Cores have the same issue that the Silverline series has/had. At this point, Boss loads their amps for much more replay value, and more importantly, the fun factor. Again, nice playing!

Nice one Dave, hope all is good in Simmo World? Top review as ever putting the new Katana through its paces giving us all an insight into what it can do. Some splendidly playing as always. All sounds excellent, takes the pedals fine straight into front of amp without using an FX loop which I don’t bother using either and happily live without. I think too many guitarist get too hung up on things like that convincing themselves and others you gotta play through an FX loop etc, or it’s the end of the world. Just plug your gear in and play and tweak your settings to your preference, it’s always possible to achieve decent tones if you work with your gear. You’ve just proved plug it I play and it sounds great with use of FX loop which no one in an audience would notice any difference or be bothered, most musicians wouldn’t either, only the guitarist playing would know and think they’ve gotta have it. It’s all in the mind it’s a must. Nice one anyway cheers Stevo

Sorry I'm late to the party, This video is a perfect example of EXACTLY why you should check out different reviews of a product by a company. For instance, Elmo Karjalainen did a review on the Katana Gen 3 and described it as a "buzzy box of plastic", even he said it was a matter of taste, and I do respect his opinion, but then listen to Dave take a deeper dive using a mixture of amp, amp effects, external effects and guitars, you get a completely different dimension of sonics and gives you an eye opener of it's capabilities. As someone already said previously, Boss picked the right man to demo these amps.

After watching your review, I bought the 50 gen3. Except of using the amp and the tone studio (which I do most of the time) I want to use it as a monitor (with the power amp in). I have a portable ik multimedia interface (iRig HD2) and according to it‘s manual I can send the headphones output to a power amp input. I also use AmpliTube and I want to use the amp as a monitor. I mean, that’s why power amp input is meant to, am I wrong?. I don’t have a clear answer from the a.m companies yet. Thomann told me it is better to use the aux in input. But, what is the use of power amp then? Sorry for my long comment.

I think he'll say that the Gen 3 is a step closer to perfection, if not perfection itself, but he'll also say that the MK I is still an excellent amp, especially for beginners who don't want to fork out for a brand new amp. 4:45 Just a thought for the shoot-out: release a video per channel rather than a long video with all channels... might be more views as the audience for 'crunch' is likely different than 'brown'... Very intrigued by Gen 3 (I own a Mk I) so thanks as always!

Have a 2x12 Katana 100 for 4 years, never missed a beat. I also have Marshall and Vox amps, the katana is first choice.
