These Nextone amps actually impressed the guys over at That Pedal Show. With a *Fuzz* the Nextone actually sounded better than whatever high-end valve amp they were A/Bing against. And they admitted it. I still love my simple valve amps, but this line of amps is definitely getting very close to indiscernible emulation of that sound, feel, and response.

I hear beautiful music, rich, dynamic, powerful and complex sound. I then wonder why anyone would continue to care about, or push the “nothing sounds as good as tubes” idea. They could have lied and said it was a new all tube deluxe reverb model, and it would have fooled most people. Just play, play with all you’ve got, and maybe you can sound as good as Chris someday.
@8sigreg

Jason Guion While it’s a nice thought that solid-state is going to catch up to tubes, it hasn’t yet. I have a Stage, and like it a lot, but it won’t replace my boutique tube combos, except when I need to keep them from getting beat up or need a smaller and lighter amp for travel. The Nextone presets live and loud are much better sounding than the sounds in this demo, but a $500 solid-state combo just isn’t going to compete with a $3000+ ToneKing SkyKing or even a Mesa Lonestar, and Boss knows that. But the Stage will definitely kick a $500 tube amp around the stage, and would give a Fender Hotrod Deluxe a run for its money in a lighter and more robust amp for the person wanting a pedal platform. A great tube amp doesn’t need anything else to sound good, it’s the holy grail sound other amps try to copy. The Stage does a creditable attempt, good enough I don’t need pedals with it because it feels and sounds good when I crank it. So when I’m comparing to things in its category I recommend it highly, but anyone who’s playing great boutique amps regularly will know the difference. But for the average beginner to intermediate players it’s a great amp and solid choice and should be a no-brainer.

First things first, this amp looks as good as it sounds. That IS something that I consider when purchasing a new amp. The sounds of the amp is pretty good too. It's just what I've been looking for. I wanted something kinda small light and that sounds great. I really don't care about how much metal or distortion I can get from an amp. Just give me some wonderful clean tones and I can get the rest. I'm not a purist, I just know what I like and this amp fits the bill. I want it to augment my Fender Blues Deville 2x12.

What would be the best way to silently play and record this amp? USB output, line out, phones out, or from the speaker output with something like Two Notes Torpedo Captor 8 (i own one), i mean to use it with IR's and preferably some stereo effects after the amp. Could i turn off the speaker simulation have my stereo delay/reverb after the line out in the chain, and then go straight into my soundcard's line in, like i do with torpedo captor and tube amps? (Blues Junior -> torpedo captor -> NUX Atlantic -> Sound Blaster Audigy Rx with Wall Of Sound IR plugin) Are all recording outputs placed after the power amp modeling stage? I really like the idea of these amps, but i have to know how much can i do with them in the silent practise/record situations, because i have a small child and it's like 90% of my playing time right now.

The Stage keeps up with bigger amps. Remember, you have to have 10x the power to double the volume, and only get +3db if you double the power, and 3db is barely perceptible, especially on stage. I think the Stage is a perfect size, and could easily be miked.

Nice amp. But apart from the external appearance, what is the difference with the Boss Katana (or even the Roland Cube) ?
@8sigreg
@8sigreg 5 жыл бұрын
Nextone is the latest generation of the Tube Logic technology first seen in the Cube, then in the Katana. The Nextone has four separate power-amp circuits, each is optimized to sound like the main power-tubes in tube amps, which would be like four modules in a Cube at a time, only they can be switched under the software control in the editor’s presets. I have a black-face 6v6 clean and 6L6 Tweed Lead in my custom preset that sounds really good loud.
@sid35gb
@sid35gb 4 жыл бұрын
The nextone and blues Cube are using tube logic tech which is not present in the katana I think It costs more to put in. The tube logic makes the amps sound very good and very dynamic. Also at volume it will do the strange wobble that tube amps do but a little bit quicker. The katana is not as responsive. To break it down Boss katana good amp for beginners that doesn’t have the money to buy pedals and wants to know what they sound like and wants to jam/ gig with friends and practice at home. Boss Nextone + Roland Blue Cube for someone who loves valve amps but doesn’t want the inconsistency, unreliability and expensive maintenance costs of a tube amp plus the back breaking weight of the things. They are fairly simple especially the Roland and make excellent valve amp replacements you can also include Orange Cr120 and Cr60 amps in with theses as well. All the amps will take pedals not so much the katana. All the amps can be turned down to whisper quiet bedroom practice levels even the 120 watt Orange amp and will still sound got. Turn down a tube amp to bedroom levels and you’ll be disappointed.

@@sid35gb Well said. Tube amps always sound best when loud as fuck which sadly isn't a option for most folks. Most folks live in the city and can't blast noise that disturbs the peace. Plus they are typically more expensive and harder to maintain. If you do have that luxery than tube amps kick ass in terms of loud great sound but that's it. Solid state today beats them out in every way.

When are these getting released ?? These look cool
@druwk
@druwk 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve cyberstalking the reviews on this amp. From what I’ve been seeing (hearing) Roland/Boss have really designed their way into something really cool. I have been a long time tube amp player, and a fan of power tube distortion/breakup. I first went from large hi watt amps (which could never be turned up) to small, low watt amps (which could really only hit their sweet spot at gigs or loud rehearsals). The small amps could never really get the tone of the big boys. This amp looks like an answer. There is no perfect. I need the dynamic response and tone that can react to my guitar, volume, pick attack, and pedals in a “natural” way. The fact that you have built in attenuation and power tube voicing seems like a dream. I have never been able to afford the high end boutique amp with an attenuator. I have a beautiful old Fender Vibro Champ, which is too loud for my neighbors and not loud enough for gigs. If this amp sounds this good live, it will be my next amp...I’m hoping, 🤞
@8sigreg
@8sigreg 5 жыл бұрын
druwk I have two of the high-end amps with attenuators and use them similar to how it sounds like you would, relying on the power-amp distortion. The Stage is a really good compliment to that sort of player. The Tweed Lead preset available in the editor is very close to the feel of an amp with a tube rectifier. It’s not an exact match to the tube-amp but it’s very good, so good you won’t care once you consider the weight and lower cost to purchase and maintain. Be sure to run the master volume on 10, just like you would with an attenuator, and use the lead volume to set the volume for the channel.

Ruinstorm warp, Nope! I got a 5e3 clone with an attenuator for live/jams, and a Strymon Iridium for silent rehearsals or silent stages. After checking out the Boss, I wasn’t blown away? It’s cool, but there’s something about a tube amp dynamics and riding the guitar volume that is really hard to duplicate?

If you guys are wondering about metal tones for use "live". Can tell you modelling only goes a little way. The cabs, pres, amps make the tone as much as the player. COSM is great tech but it's how you apply it. A small cab will only get you a small cab sound. But in a small crowded venue this might work, not too sure about plugging in downtuned guitars with loads of drive from Metal Core or Mega Distortion. I remember using JC-120 with them. Lol. If they like your playing, anything goes. 😂
@aaronkaaimarino
@aaronkaaimarino 6 жыл бұрын
Tube Logic is very different from COSM and these amps are very different from typical solid state though. Current driven, vs voltage driven, class A/B power. Cranked up this amp barks like you want it to.
@nickash5
@nickash5 6 жыл бұрын
@@aaronkaaimarino Aaron Marino yup but there's a reason why we use the actual equipment. It's give me the real thing if you have it. Like, cables, the cabs, etc. Roland makes great products and I've been using and sharing them with players at gigs. It's easier to change the guitar than to change the amp for the seasoned players. Personally, I prefer the solid state amp to use with the modeling software. I think the benefit of the tech in this amp is to reduce wattage but drive the amp at high load. It's built for those requiring lower volume but a high load response. Small clubs, home band practice. Try it and see if it works for the situation. So with this amp, we can change the response of the amplification characteristics by making changes in an editor through the computer? JC-120 is ok for the job. 😉

Agreed. I have a Stage and like it a lot, and used it live two times I played last week, then last night took my Lonestar Special instead. I run my amps on the lead channel 99% of the time and control it all from the guitar’s volume, and the Stage responds like the tube amps, and gets very fat and compresses like a tube rectifier and distorting power section does, but the sound and touch isn’t quite there. The Mesa had that extra zing that makes good tube amps so fun to play. I highly recommend the Stage for its category and price point but it’s not ready to put high-end amps on the shelf nor is it intended to.

Sweetwater has it listed for $499. I agree, if this was priced like a Katana I would be all over it. A Blues Jr is $599, and that is the benchmark for this sort of amp

@NoiseFeedMusic I think it sounds great too, it's just hard to get excited for it when the "real thing" is available for similar money. I don't know what this amp cost to make or how much R&D money is behind it, but I hope that improvements to solid state technology will make great tones cheaper. If the price of solid states is inflated to what people will pay for a sound, they are pointless.

@@zrwhiskey This amp FEELS great , and responds like a tube amp, after a few gigs with the stage 40 going out to the desk and using it as a monitor for myself I really like it , I found using the custom' patches and with lead selected I could clean up the sound but then get great o/d just turning up the vol knob on the guitar , not going to suit everyone but its light , silent and nicely built for the price of a couple of pedals , a mate has nearly 2k invested in his board alone , so its a personal thing .

Zachary Weyandt Blues junior is the benchmark most popular amp in the world. But it’s a tube amp with tube amp problems. If you go to a gig and it’s got bad power or the electricity company is working on the grid at that time valve amps will not perform how you want them to no matter how hard you try to dial it in but the next day it could sound amazing. Also a tube can go at anytime which means you’re in the lap of the gods from gig to gig. Solid state/ digital amps don’t have those issues. The tube logic tech makes for a great sounding amp that behaves like a tube amp. The gap has closed enough that tube amps days are numbered. I’m a tube snob got Marshall’s, Fender tweeds, Orange and Vox tube amps but I’m trading them in for solid state. Although I own a Katana it’s not got the mojo of the tube logic amps or an Orange Cr60 which is basically a rockerverb circuit with op amps replacing the valves.

@@sid35gb I'm glad to hear great tube amps will be for sale soon because I love them and they will never die at this point. Solid State wouldn't continuously try to sound like them if tubes weren't the goal tone and feel. There are companies that make great solid state amps too. I have an 80's Peavey Jazz Classic and the tone is undeniable. We are in the golden age of gear and there is something for everyone.

Nope, wishful thinking. Nextone is the next generation amp and younger brother of the Katana. It has improved circuitry over the Katana. It’s not designed to compete with the Katana, it’s for the player who already has pedals, or doesn’t want pedals and expects the amp to be the whole sound, like we do with boutique tube amps.
@sid35gb
@sid35gb 4 жыл бұрын
Nope not correct the Katana is not the same it doesn’t have the tube logic tech makes a noticeable difference to the sound and dynamic response. Also the Katana has all the effects you’ll need but putting pedals into it is Meh! Nextone is more a old school amp with a digital twist.

This sounds great from what I have heard, but the marketing terms are getting silly. "Class AB power amp circuits", "Tube logic", etc. It's a solid state amp with power amp modelling. Solid state amps also do not need power control attenuation.
@Knightsie
@Knightsie 6 жыл бұрын
There are two reasons it does. All Power amps have a "class" Most valve amps are Class A etc. This is Class A/B which means it reacts the same as a valve amp, so the more you crank it the better the tone (like a valve amp would react) so by putting the power amp control on there it means you can crank the power amp but maintain the feel and response as lower volumes. Each Power amp type and volume type changes the way the amp reacts. So it does more than just attenuate the volume Tube Logic is Boss' evolving technology used in there amps. Also worth noting the four power amp circuits in this are not modelling. They are real analogue circuits designed to match that of the valve counterparts. Hope this helps.

@@Knightsie exactly. Well said I own a Blues Cube Hot and this new amp is the same concept with the Tube logic taken to the next level
@aaronkaaimarino
@aaronkaaimarino 6 жыл бұрын
Also to add to what Matt Knight said, BOSS amps (Waza, Katana, Blues Cube) are all "current" driven class a/b amplifiers (like a tube amp), not a typical "voltage" driven solid state amplifier. Nextones have 4 versions of class a/b, 4 analog sections. Like a tube amp they respond to the reactive impedance of the speaker, whereas solid state typically does not.

Power atténuation feature is really helpful on these amps. When I'm playing at home I use mostly the 0.5w setting, and I barely reach half the full volume. To get the same level with the 25 or 50w option in my Katana I'd have to keep the volume around 1, 1.25, so it would be much harder to control. Turn the knob a milimiter more than you should, and you're too loud.

Well, we will have to agree to disagree on this one. I run a number of amps including the ID260TVP ( and there is a big difference between the 60 and the 260 ) and the TVP Section works incredibly well with the cab/speakers etc. The boss is just their stab at it.

Stand in front of one that’s cranked up and you’ll immediately change your mind. It’s small but it doesn’t sound like it at all. I’ve had compliments for the sound of my Stage at 20 watts with the master at 10, saying it sounded really big.

Demolab Studio There’s no modeling at all in the amp. It’s purely analog through the signal stage. It’s definitely not old-style solid-state. I had a Helix and currently have an AX-8 and like the Stage over them. It’s not perfect but it’s a a great amp live and loud.
