About timestretch, you can also go into each of the 5 tracks and change Speed mode (something like that) to Pitch, then the track's pitch follows the time changes (if you speed up, the pitch gets higher, if you slow down, it gets lower). That maintains the sound quality without having that choppy aspect to it

Sound quality is immediately apparent, as are the very good drum loops. So I have to try this one. I owned the RC10R (need to replace it) and the RC-5, both are very good . I have the RC-505 MK1, it does feel a bit toy like at times, in terms of the fx and the slightly grainy nature of the loop quality. I love that I can set loop lengths, time signatures, count in times, sync to MIDI etc. All great features that old school loopers were missing (hence making them hard to incorporate in a live band context). I am liking all these new features, especially the multiple ins outs and routing potential. It's just a lot of money to splurge on an upgrade. I don't suppose Boss fancy doing an upgrade option where we can trade in our Mk1s? lol

The RC-505 is one of the best musical devices ... ever. SOOOO much fun. I think almost every musician should have one. The only real downside is the tendency to get stuck in short loops, since that's basically what it's built for. It's really hard to get much musical progression with this type of device, so it can feel pretty limiting for those looking to make longer compositions. But then, if the user often bumps their head on that, it probably means they've grown enough as a musician that they should get some sort of DAW. Aside from some early years awkwardly struggling with trackers, looping was the thing which really got me started with music. I've since moved on to use an Akai Force as the center of my studio, but a big part of why I like it is because it has a workflow very similar to a looper. But instead of 5 loop slots, it has an entire 8x8 grid, scrollable, so I don't have to bump my head on short loops any more. The RC-505 is good even for pros though, especially when you don't know what to make and want to come up with some new ideas. It's a great way to go from a blank mind to a detailed song sketch in practically no time at all, or even to just meditate with sound during a lunch break. The thing is freaking fantastic.
@aquaticborealis48773 жыл бұрын
Have you looked at the Deluge? The RC-505 does look like a lot of fun.
@ToyKeeper3 жыл бұрын
@@aquaticborealis4877 Yeah, I almost got a Deluge. It's one of very few hardware devices which have a clips+scenes+arranger workflow. However, the pads aren't pressure-sensitive, it's designed to only have a few scenes per song, and it desperately needs a screen... so I went for a Force instead. Also, it's nice that the Force runs Linux so I can add my own programs and stuff to it. But I've been keeping an eye on the Deluge for several years because it has so much potential. It's good gear.
@jm67343 жыл бұрын
Never owned a looper. Probably cause I’m more into making songs than doing short loops like you say. But with all that sample time what’s stopping you? I’m tempted by the immediacy and fun factor.
@ToyKeeper3 жыл бұрын
@@jm6734 People can and do make complete songs with a RC-505. It's just difficult, because it's not really built for that. So doing it takes more skill and more planning than you would need with, say, Ableton. As for why it's more difficult, a big part is that there are only 5 loop slots. It's like having only one of what other devices would call a "scene" or "pattern", with 5 tracks. The mk2 upgrades that by allowing each loop slot to have 2 or 3 stacked layers, which should help a lot with song production, but it's still, at best, pretty limiting... and requires pretty clever planning to make it work. Another part of what makes it difficult compared to other devices is that it's entirely audio-based so you have to perform each part real-time. This raises the skill required to produce good results, since the user must be able to actually play. However, if you remove the goal of making complete songs, this type of looper becomes incredibly fun, easy, and intuitive. It's also a great way to practice and develop performance skills. Basically nothing else can be as quick or easy, since it all happens in real time. It's great at helping the user get into a state of flow, just zenning out and jamming. The only frustrating part is the low ceiling. Try to take a jam to the next level, and you'll probably bump your head on the device's limitations. A lot of workarounds are required to go beyond a one-pattern loop. So the usual way people do it is to set up a 4-chord loop and play or improvise the melody live on top of that loop, while maybe muting / unmuting tracks to provide a sense of movement. Or they'll build up a pattern, do a break, then delete most of it and start a new pattern, over and over. It's a good start, and a ton of fun, but it's not the right tool if you want to make songs which are bigger, more complex, and less improvised. Meanwhile, something like an Akai Force or Ableton Push can be almost as quick to use, and has a much much higher ceiling. So once I got tired of single-pattern loops, I upgraded to a Force. It has opened up a lot of room to grow. I'm now at the point where my quick sketches are usually like 5-10 patterns long and 6-8 tracks wide, and I'm barely scratching the surface of what I can do with it. But there's still nothing quite like zoning out with a looper and meditating for an hour with simple, sloppy, improvised songs. Instead of calling it a "Boss looper", they should call it a "Bliss looper".
@jm67343 жыл бұрын
@@ToyKeeper Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. These are exactly the things I’m contemplating atm. On one side I’d like something hands-on to capture ideas (like many I just use my phone). This looper looks perfect for this and way more that could easily inspire songs/pieces along. But on the other hand I want something that I can actually produce actual tracks and easily export these as stems into Ableton, not just jam. So why not just use Ableton? It’s got it all really. Well, the thing is I find myself reluctant to switch on the computer when inspiration strikes. There’s definitely a threshold from composing on guitar/synth to open up the DAW. I believe many feel this way. So I’ve been scoping out for an immediate device like a good quality field recorder or sampler, but haven’t decided yet. I don’t want an Akai. But I think I’ll get the new Roland SP-404mk2. It looks nice and fast for any genre really. And I like that it’s effects are experimental. Don’t know about this BOSS looper since it’s Roland's guitar division.. I just need to make sure the software on the SP-404 is smooth for exporting stems. I’ve been thinking about these things for a while and I can’t believe why Ableton are so afraid to cannibalise their precious software. Can’t they see all the people NOT wanting computers on stage.. And all the musicians who simply want to sample/record without PCs. Why don’t they make a nice (mid-priced) portable, stand-alone device that integrates with the Live and holds a few effects. It’s must be executives that never were musicians and simply don’t get it. DAWs are not much fun to use for the initial stage of creation. That says a lot about why this desktop looper is so popular. At least I think so.

1st question I always ask with a new Boss looper - how well does it handle being slaved to MIDI clock?
@ChinchillaWafers3 жыл бұрын
The original 505 could slave to MIDI clock, it had some advanced software to smooth out jitter. For best fidelity you want the thing recording and playing audio to be the master, though- otherwise it does little nasty time stretching stuff to the audio to keep it in time with an external clock. A lot of people will make their favorite piece of gear, or most expensive piece of gear, or their midi sequencer the master, but it is much cleaner for any midi stuff to slave to the thing doing audio playback, than vice-versa. Only exception would be when you have two things doing audio, like a DAW or another looper. The 505 mk1 was good with the options for clock and start/stop messages, there were a few options as to when that happened. I settled on having the rhythm track start/stop also start/stop the midi clock being sent out. You could turn the rhythm track down and still use the rhythm start/stop button to get your synced midi stuff going, and it wouldn’t stop if you stopped the loops from playing, only when you hit the stop button on the rhythm track. The 505 does the thing where it is always sending clock, even before and after the start/stop messages.

You mentioned driving the MIDI clock from a drummer - I know of someone who does exactly this. They have a mic on the drummer's kick drum, which feeds the audio in of his MODX. The MODX tracks this and sets its tempo to that kick drum. The MIDI clock, derived from the MODX's tempo, then feeds everything else, including the RC-505. The original RC-505 did have some audio glitching problems when it was performing time stretching while slaved an external MIDI clock and attempting to derive its tempo from that clock. I'm curious to see if the MKII has fixed this problem.

I had been pondering over the mk1 for a while, so when news of the Mk2 came along I pre-ordered and paid my money. Sadly, that was in November, was told it would be December delivery, then Jan, then feb, now it’s the end of March. I wish that manufacturers would have the products in store and ready to ship when they tease you, I know there have been a lot of times that I would have made an impulse purchase on the back of a KZbin demo, but then the item has been a pre order so I’ve not bothered about it, and then subsequent videos convinced me that I didn’t really need it. I’m at the point where Boss/Roland are about to lose a sale.

Is there an audio quantize feature of some sorts? It would be great if it could automatically quantize the timing of recorded clips like Ableton Live can, preferably with less than full strength like 75% strength, and to a swing pattern such as 1/16th 62% swing.

learn to quantize yourself, hardware won't do all the staff. Imperfectly quantized notes is what makes us humans hey
@yzimsx3 жыл бұрын
@@IIeTpOc9H4uK It's a good tool, just like pitch correction. Ableton and others can audio-quantize, and quantization is completely expected from MIDI sequencers. Why not audio loopers.
@IIeTpOc9H4uK3 жыл бұрын
@@yzimsx coz you gotta learn to play music in-time and in-pitch initially to keep your brain fit. The main principle of loopers for me is that they are fair. You got what you've played. It's not supposed to be easy no.

@@IIeTpOc9H4uK I'm 45 already, so I don't expect significant timing improvements. My timing with a looper is like this, and if that had been in Ableton, I would have audio-quantized the rhythm guitars and bass slightly to make it tighter kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJLce6dvh7GWeJY

Yes, there’s quantise. Loopop mentions it in his comparison video vs the 600

does the mk2 still only record quantised and is not capable of recording unquantised (following the own rhythmic flow), or has this bug been fixed by a software update meanwhile?

It has a 'free' mode when recording....if that's what you are asking?

Is there anyway to 'cue' the individual tracks via headphones or something. Say you record some vocals, and it sounds out of key, and you don't want to send it to final output/mix?

Great review as always, I need to ask you all, is t there a need for a looper with BOTH foot and hand control! I mean why not make a foot pedal option for this unit or a Bluetooth option for the RC-600 so you can easily mix you level with an iPad. I get tired of bending down using my RC-300. Thoughts?
@Woodhead5673 жыл бұрын
I agree. You can buy a standalone midi swither and connect it to the boss rc505. But at least with the mk 1 it's quite menu divey

I live the functions an form factor of the mKII, but I do mostly guitar based looping, so I’ll have to go after the arc-600, which apparently is back ordered until feb! Ugh

if you have a stero splitter connector you can use multiple insturments on one.

The MKI is one of my favorite pieces of gear. It's also very quick to learn, one of my friends does his noise shows on mine because it's too difficult with his home setup :) I'd like you to test if the output is jittery if clocked by an irregular source. That was a problem on the old one, with a lot of clock sources.

My question is: should I get this or an ableton looper for a dance music live set?
@johnthebigtree3 жыл бұрын
Ableton will give you endless possibilities The 505 will be limiting in comparison, but possibly more fun Since you're doing dance music, I'd probably suggest ableton, as long as the midi controller is fun to use. You want to feel the music and have fun while you perform. For me, the 505 mk1 is the most fun I've ever had with a piece of gear. Good luck
