The Boss at Six Flags St. Louis is a colossal wooden roller coaster built by Custom Coasters International. The ride is one of the tallest, fastest, and longest wood coasters in the world. And this makes it one of the most challenging rides in the world to maintain. Many consider Boss to be rough and many want to see the ride get the Rocky Mountain Construction steel I-box treatment. But what do I think of Boss? Find out in this review!

That first drop is pretty unique, flying through that structure so fast must be pretty intense! If Rmcd, it would likely become a top tier coaster in the country tho, I'd like to experience it before that maybe happens.

SFSTL native here. i've ridden boss probably hundreds of times, including with the double helix. i loved the intensity of the helix, but that bunny hop into the brakes is really the only instance of ejector airtime you can get in sfstl. I miss getting constant floater and not getting trimmed to death, but the first time i rode boss after GCI redid the ending, i was absolutely blown away by that bunny hill. This coaster absolutely smacks. But it'd smack a lot harder if it was RMC'd lmao

I rode this back in the 2000s as a child WITHOUT THE TRIMS and let me tell you, there was almost a sense of accomplishment or bravery earned in school if you rode this thing because it was truly crazy back in its prime. Each of those big drops gave you floater-ejector in the back seat and it felt like you were falling off the face of the earth! this ride is so slept on, probably because it didn't age well, but I have so much love for it because I know what this ride really is at its best, and it’s top tier (or used to be). This was better than many B&M hyper coasters back in the day with the airtime it used to give!

I agree with every word you said Solo Sea. I used to live in Memphis back in 2000 when this first open and me, my mother, father and cousins used to rent a van and head to down to St. louis for that 4 or 5 hour drive. And let me tell you, this ride was our favorite. My mother used to say the boss is the boss. lol. It was fun , smooth but with a little roughness to it, and it was a wild out of control ride. I think the last time i rode it was maybe back in 20012 and it didn't age well. So with that being said, they should RMC it to bring this coaster back to life for good. It will be worth a good investment for sure.

I rode the Boss during my one visit to Six Flags St. Louis which occurred in the early 2000's. (It will always be Six Flags Over Mid-America to me.) It was a beautiful park with lots of personality. The Boss would have been untrimmed at the time. The double helix was really intense. Not only did the diameter seem to be smaller than it should be, but it appeared to be at the lowest elevation that the track would reach. That's a powerful combination. It felt like the train was trying to throw me out. It would not surprise me to learn that this coaster is where the phrase "Gertz hurts" was coined. My favorite part was the second part of the double dip. As you said, it will take riders by surprise. I'm sure RMC would make something wonderful out of The Boss. But, they have the tendency to cut the track length significantly on any remodels they do. I sampled The Boss twice, once in front and once in back and that was enough for me. I spent much of my time on Screamin' Eagle. Mr Freeze was down that day, so I missed it (although I have ridden SFOT's installation several times.) The GCI did not exist at that time. I sampled the Ninja once and wished they had kept their other Mine Tain instead. Two vintage Arrow Mine Trains adjacent to each other sounds like a win to me.

I think a GCI retracking like Ghostrider would be the best option, six flags wouldn’t, but some traditional wood coasters like ghostrider should be preserved in their original layouts, and Boss is one of those m. GCi tightened steel track is another good option that might be more realistic for Six Flags. I love RMC, but i do think The Boss deserves to be a traditional wood coaster due to it’s unique layout

I still stand by what I said about how they should give this the RMC treatment. It's important to remember that sometimes it's not just the ride but the park in a whole that you have to think about on whether it needs that or not. Sure this may be expensive but it's going to bring in a lot more thrill seekers to the park and it's going to save them lots of money so they don't have to continously retrack it so it's going to be worth every penny in the end. Six Flags Darien Lake should've done the same thing with Predator as well. That's one of the more lesser popular parks in the chain and a renovation like that would've been a success for them as well. I don't know why they didn't either.
@OutlawRunnerSDC
@OutlawRunnerSDC 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, to a point, Instead of investing in smaller rides for a few years, SF:STL could devote a lot of money to The Boss to make it an All-Star RMC hyper-hybrid potentially. If they did that then they could afford to not add new rides for several years here since the Boss would draw SteVe-like crowds for a long time and SF could, in the long run, profit off of this

@@CanobieCoaster Yeah, rn SFSTL is a ghost town due to COVID, so I think if this park is to make enough money, Six Flags may really consider an RMC Boss, but would wait until its safer to go to the park, maybe in 2023 or 2024.

@@mitchellries256 You also need to take into account the GP. To a lot of thrill seekers (excluding myself) the boss isn’t as rough as people say it is, but to the GP who don’t ride wood coasters or coasters in general as often, it is one of the worst rides in the park. The RMC route will be more expensive, but the GP makes up a large part of any park’s attendance which means that they could hugely benefit from RMC’ing this ride and make it more appealing to the GP and thrill seekers alike

The Boss RMC'd would be a top 5 hybrid, without a doubt. Six Flags St. Louis of all places would have an elite, top 20 worthy coaster. However, the layout is great as is so I think a Titan track would also enter the coaster into this elite category, possibly for cheaper.

It’s funny you mentioned the old layout and riding at night. the first four times I rode the boss was in the same day. It was before 2018. I think it was in the Sumer of 2016, That would explain why it felt more rough back then it did this year when I rode it. The first one I took at the end of sunset which was insanely beautiful. And The last three rides after were back to back in pitch black before closing. The ride operator let us stay on because we where the last riders that night and sent us three more times till more than half the people got off, and he closed it for the night. Never realized how lucky I was till now. Wish I could remember it better, but most of it I can recall is was being thrown around in the darkness not knowing where anything was or what was even happening. There are absolutely no lights on it except for the the loading dock. Once you go down the first hill you couldn’t see anything. So, the only details I can give you are. It was fast and it felt like almost borderline whiplash. But like in a fun way. That and the slight panic of getting airtime for the first time in the dark on an old ass wooden coaster thinking for a split second thinking something went horribly wrong and I was gonna die lol. Good times….

SFSL is my home park, and I've ridden Boss many times. A GCI retrack is all this needs in my opinion. People say it should get RMC'd because "it'd give SFSL a standout coaster." I say this IS the standout coaster, its just that it's rough, and even as a massive fan of this coaster who DOESN'T want to see it RMC'd, even I'll admit to that. I got a night ride during Fright Fest back in 2016 (good god that was 6 years ago) before they removed the helix and just let the train coast through the MCBR. It hauled ass through the second half, and the drop off the MCBR and turnaroud gave excellent airtime in the back (you can still get a decent pop on a hot summer day though). It was honestly an amazing experience, and I feel like a lot of the people who aren't fans of the ride would change their tune at least a little if they experienced it. Sadly, I don't even know if it's able to run during FF at this point, let alone at night. October can get pretty friggin' cold here, and as it stands, nobody will get to experience what I did in 2016, if for no other reason than the trimming and removal of the helix. A GCI retrack to get this ride running smooth and without trims (and maybe, just maybe bring back the helix) will make this ride amazing again, but even in its currently nerfed state, I still love this ride. Good god I basically wrote a small essay on this coaster.

Totally agree with the aggressiveness statement. This ride is not painful in that it's rough, it can be painful in that it is a lot. The ride just hits those drops with so much speed and that speed is elevated by the surroundings that it can be overwhelming. The turns and aggression is something else. I was fortunate enough to get a trim less ride and i can confirm it's epic. It completely sends the second half to the point where i can't stomach back to back rides. All in all I personally love this ride

I think this ride is in a similar situation to the original Cyclone at Six Flags New England. It's quite rough, but still rideable, and has some redeeming qualities. It also has the same problem where the ride's pacing is killed by a devastating trim brake. I think it should be considered to be RMC'd, but only if they can keep the length about the same. The full retrack and titan track in high stress portions of the layout would also help a lot, but I think it's clear that the ride should not be left as is.

I commented my piece on the last video, but I don't want the Boss RMCed unless Six Flags is willing to pay the extra money to make it a World's-Best Contender. Also, the Boss was sooo much better with the helix in place, it was the perfect finale for this monstrosity, plus the mid-course was untrimmed which gave insane ejector off of the midcourse and great flojector on the swooping turn on the next hill. I will say one thing, if they made Boss a #1-contender RMC that long queue would complement the lines it would draw quite nicely. Edit: You should definitely ride the Boss at night, it completely blows you away and you can't see anything. You are completely at the mercy of this wooden behemoth, I can't even imagine how good the night ride would be on a RMC Boss

Been riding this coaster since it opened. It really is a shame how rough it has been at times. As a kid it didn’t get to me much. And it wasn’t that bad. But once I was older than 22 it will give me a headache for the rest of the day if I ride it more than once. It really was a great coaster when it opened imo. Nothing earth shattering or anything but very enjoyable. The helix was gnarly. Friends of mine would grey out on it. Very intense. Everyone knows it is one of the best RMC candidates left in the world. Will that happen is STL? Probably not. Haven’t had a custom steel coaster since ninja...just too pricey for them to care I guess. I get it, it’s a small market. And the added enthusiasts from an RMC addition is hardly a fraction of the additional revenue they’d be needing.

Canobie Coaster would say: Boss was especially susceptible to this considering the sheer size of this coaster, and many riders have found this coaster unbearably rough. It is clear that Six Flags St. Louis is aware of this. For one, the ride now brings you to a near stop on the mid-course brake run. This causes you to crawl through the start of the second half, but the reduced speed does help reduce wear and tear on the structure. Originally, the ride ran through this section uninhibited, and the second half was even wilder by all accounts. I've heard of a few lucky riders getting untrimmed Boss rides in recent years, but they're few and far between. Two, the helix was arguably the most intense part of the ride. While I unfortunately never experienced Boss with this element, my first time riding this coaster was in 2018 shortly after it reopened, those who did experience the double helix said...

I agree this is one of the most polarizing wooden coasters, people either love it or they hate it. For me, I honestly kind of hate it. It does absolutely nothing for me. From what I remember, it has no airtime, no positives, not even laterals, come on, your a CCI, you have to have laterals but the big turns are so high off the ground and so slow, you feel like you are going to valley. It is also very rough but of course that is what to expect for an old wooden coaster so it doesn't bother me to much. One of the worst things about it in my opinion are the trains. I am not a fan of the Gerstlauer trains. I defiantly prefer the PTC trains. The one good thing this coaster does do though is that it will make a fantastic RMC, the layout has so much RMC potential and I honestly cant think of a better wooden coaster to get RMCed.

SF-STL needs a top tier roller coaster BADLY. And RMC'ing The Boss is the cheapest way to get one, the park flat-out deserves a B&M hyper, but being as I highly doubt SF will give that to this park it seems this would be their best bet. Two, the helix was arguably... A) the weakest part of the ride. B) the most intense part of the ride. C) the fastest part of the ride. D) the roughest part of the ride.
