Why do they slap the horses when they dismount?

I believe it’s to synchronise with any other riders on the dismount so it’s done as a drill movement, this will be a cavalry movement practised over the centuries and would not cause the horse any discomfort.

To let them know they will be dismounting as to not startle them , I would think that’s why .
