@@drrd4127 this comment (although factual), is also kindda redundant… The original comment is a direct response to watching James Corden who is, yes, is British, but is also very much English. So yeah, not every British person is an English person but this video is actually a conversation between an English and American. In fact, I doubt the original comment would have been made had James been Scottish, Irish or Welsh (and speaking in his native tongue)… And even if it had, I doubt he would have been referred to as a “Brit” because Americans tend refer to English as “Brits” as and the Scottish, Irish or Welsh as “Scottish, Irish or Welsh.”

Even without swearing and doing the authentic Boston accent, the Bostoners have a very clear and clean way of speaking. I had a Bostoner instructor for 5 years at college and I could understand him speaking so easily. I thought it was because he was a teacher but that's not the case. In the film industry Matt Damon is one of the few actors a new English learner can understand so easily. He speaks so clearly and so easy to understand.

If you really want to learn how to speak in a Boston accent, all you have to do is watch his (or find a movie with an actress in Boston if you're female) movies where he speaks with the accent and copy it exactly as you hear it. Eventually you figure out the patterns and the little things that make the accent so different. Then you can develop your own voice in it after a few weeks of practice. Can confirm it is difficult to not swear when doing that accent though.

Alejandra Rodriguez I'm assuming you're from Boston or at least Massachusetts since you brought up the "T". The MBTA drivers in the South end, North end, East Boston, Dorchester, Roxbury, Roslyndale, Hyde park, Mattapan ect.. I've never heard it... The only time I've ever heard that accent is in Dedham,ma some places in South Boston keyword some! The rest come from further out Massachusetts!

+MrNikeFresh808 BU isn't Brighton; BC is. And note, Matt and his best friend, Ben Affleck, are from Cambridge. But the term 'Boston accent' is all encompassing of New England.

Accurate. I've lived in the south for so long now I forgot about the r at the end of Ma when followed by a vowel. I never really thought of it as being before a vowel. It just came natural.

0:20 "You can't really (speak Bostonese) without swearing." Truth: the F-word operates like a noun determiner, adjective or semi-colon with no ill intent. Barely notice it slip out non-stop.

This is an idiosyncrasy many don’t realize when imitating it. Everyone knows about the dropped ‘r’ at the end of words - but fewer know that the missing r is re-added when the following word begins with a vowel. I was talking to a buddy in the Navy years ago (I grew up in the northern Boston suburbs - Wilmington, Billerica, Woburn) and we were talking about TV shows. I said “Law(r) and Order” referring to that show. Had never thought about that pronunciation before. He was “wait a minute - did you say ‘Lawr and Order’”? Took me a minute to even realize it. We say it without thinking most of the time.

That's true for most non-rhotic accents. Any word ending with a vowel followed by another word starting with a vowel. In most of Britain, for example, you might consume "pizza-R-and beer". In most of the US (aside from New England) you'd be having "pizzaandbeer".
