Boston Whaler Montauk Project: Installing Telefex Rotary Cable Steering System
In this video I will be installing a Teleflex rotary cable steering system on my Boston Whaler Montauk. As always,, your installation may differ, but here's a general guide:
Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials. These usually include wrenches, screwdrivers, a drill (if needed), the Teleflex Rotary Cable Steering System kit, and any additional hardware required. Ensure the boat is on a stable surface and in a location where you can work comfortably. If there was a previous steering system, remove it carefully, along with any associated hardware.
You will want to start by installing the rotary helm. This is usually done by mounting it securely to the boat's helm station. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mounting and securing the helm. If your kit includes a bezel kit, install it according to the instructions provided. This typically involves securing the bezel to the helm and routing the cables through it. Attach one end of the steering cable to the rotary helm. Secure it tightly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Carefully route the steering cable through the boat, ensuring it's clear of any obstructions and sharp edges that could damage it. Use cable clamps or ties to secure the cable in place along its route.
Attach the other end of the steering cable to the engine's steering arm or linkage. Again, ensure it's securely fastened according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once the steering cable is installed, make any necessary adjustments to ensure proper tension and alignment. Test the steering system by turning the helm to ensure smooth operation. Once everything is installed and tested, secure any loose ends of the steering cable and tidy up the installation area to prevent any hazards or damage.
Conduct a final inspection to ensure everything is properly installed, tightened, and secured. Double-check all connections and fittings to ensure there are no leaks or loose components. Before putting the boat into regular use, take it for a short sea trial to ensure the steering system functions correctly under normal operating conditions.
