Botafumeiro, the swinging incense burner / der schwingende Weihrauchkessel in Santiago de Compostela

Nach der Messe gibt es manchmal in Santiago de Compostela den sogenannten "Botafumeiro", eine Tradition seit mehr als 500 Jahren. Im Jahre 1851 wurde der heutige Botafumeiro gefertigt, es gibt 3 davon, 1 in der Kathedrale, einer in Reserve und der in meinem Video am Anfang gezeigte in einem Souvenirshop ganz in der Nähe der Kathedrale !
Den Botafumeiro gibt es nach Hochämtern, also zu Ostern, Pfingsten etc., aber auch dann nicht nach jeder Messe. Zuletzt gab es ihn aber immer nach der Pilgermesse jeden Freitag abends 18.00, gesponsort vom örtlichen Touristenverband. Man könnte auch einen Botafumeiro "buchen" für etwa 400,-€ sagt man.
2020 gibt es keinen Botafumeiro, weil die Kathedrale innen renoviert wird und der Corona-Virus vieles verzögert hat, aber 2021 ist Heiliges Jahr & die Kathedrale wird hoffentlich wieder offen sein !

In the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela you will sometimes be able to watch the so-called "Botafumeiro". It is an incence burner that is swinging through the church on a rope that is fixed on the ceiling of the church. It needs 8 people to operate the botafumeiro, a tradition that was started about 500 years ago. The botafumeiro that you see nowadays was made in 1851 and 3 of them were made: 1 for the cathedral, 1 as a spare one and a 3rd one that is on display in a souvenirshop close to the cathedral, you can see that in my video as well. On special holidays like Easter, Pentecost etc. there will be a botafumeiro after the church-service. And once a week, after the pilgrim-mass on Friday 06.00pm the botafumeiro will be sponsored by the local tourist-office. Rumors say it is possible to "book a botafumeiro" for something like 400,-€

In 2020 the cathedral is still under restauration, so there will be NO botafumeiro untill 2021 most probably !!!

It is a combination of 2 Botafumeiros I saw from 2 different places with a Panasonic LX5 (1280x720p) and some people around me were not amused how my camera was swinging ... ;-) Last time I tried with a Gopro fullHD and it was just rubbish from a bad place ! Best regards from Vienna !

It did not help me last year in Santiago that I had a big Column in front of me and the church was extremely crowded and I was really low on Memory plus the youtube idea came this year!!!! you can check my video the first 40 seconds and laugh, but i had some ok photos later kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmeXeqCJoLOjl68

You can check my Santiago Botafumeiro and Laugh for the 40 secs (I was short on memory as well)!!! it did not help that I had a big Column blocking my view, the church was too crowded and was too difficult to reenter the next day! plus I did not plan a youtube channel until this month! O botafumeiro é o incensario de gran tamaño que se atopa na catedral de Santiago de Compostela. Por extensión, en Galiza é frecuente chamarlle botafumeiro a calquera incensario. O botafumeiro é o incensario maior do mundo, feito de latón bañado en prata, que pesa 62 kg baleiro e mide 1,50 m de altura e 59 cm de diámetro na parte máis ancha. Orixinalmente pesaba 60 kg, pero en 2006 engadíuselle un baño de prata que fixo aumentar a súa masa ata os 62 kg actuais. A corda que o suspende, atada do ciborio da catedral, é, desde o 2007, dun material sintético, mide 65 metros, ten 5 cm de diámetro e pesa 90 kg. Anteriormente as cordas facíanse de cánabo ou de esparto.

Sehr schönes Video. Aber bitte nicht noch eines mit der Toccata aus BWV565 hinterlegt... mir hängt das Stück mittlerweile aus dem Hals raus.

tut mir leid, ich fand die Musik ideal, zumal ich dazu auch eine Lizenz habe diese mit meinen Videos zu veröffentlichen. Die meisten anderen Videos vom Botafumeiro sind mit der Original Musik aus der Kirche unterlegt, aber kaum einer hat dazu tatsächlich auch die Musikrechte. Auch ich denke gerne zurück an die Stimme der Nonne die dort singt während des Botafumeiro !

Der Botafumeiro ist fixiert auf einer Rolle unter der Kuppel und auf der Achse dieser Rolle gibt es eine separate Rolle, wo das Zugseil fix befestigt ist und durch ruckartige Bewegungen schwingt der Kessel... 2x ist er schon an die Decke gekracht, sonst gabs keine Probleme ! ...ich sag mal, der Jakobus hat ein Auge drauf, das ist besser als jeder TÜV ! ;-)
