I was overwhelmed by over 400 responses to the Loose vs Tight episode. All in less than a week! WOW! Great comments and stories. I share a few in this video along with a neat botanical watercolor book review.

Ob, Steve. I had already commented about the video, but when you mentioned the lady who quit painting in watercolor because she was told she was doing it wrong, she sounded just like me. I am 69 years old. When I went to college in 1965, I planned to be an art major. I did a project in india ink and watercolor that I simply loved, and my teacher despised because it was realistic sunset and sunrise seascapes in Florida. He dissuaded me so much that I abandoned my dream, and only returned to watercolor about a year ago, and now I am truly happy painting birds with as much detail as I want, and with loose backgrounds when I choose. Thanks again for all your teaching and encouragement. I am so glad I found you as a teacher.

Hi Steve! My name is Jordan Arguilla. I've been working with watercolor as my primary medium for over 3 years now. I'm a landscape painter, and trying out urban sketching with pen and watercolor. I'm currently studying at Southwestern College as an art major with a visual impairment. I'm blind on my right eye and legally on my left. I paint to show people my interpretation of the world I see, and to inspire myself and others to show that anything is possible even with a disability. I just want to say thank you. For the past few months, I haven't been painting. I've been in and out of depression, so I just stopped altogether. I've been watching your videos again since last year, and it inspired me to start painting again. I recently spent $300 at Blick to gets started again! I continue to send positive vibes through art!

I guess it all really comes down to 'Why do we paint?' Is it to bring ourselves pleasure, or to please others? I think art should have only one rule, and that is to be true to yourself.

I too appreciated your "rant" of last week as well as all your videos. Not because I've felt forced to paint in a way to which I was unsuited. But because of your consistent dedication to giving your followers useful information rather than promotion. For me your maturity, professionalism, and especially your modesty are a gift in the face of what is only technically facile or fashionable. Thank you. MB

Hi Steve, I am also seventy like your viewer and have been painting for years, but just recently had the light bulb go off in a couple of ways: yes, I can use white if I want; yes, I can use a light box and "trace" my photos (this was a big one); and yes, I can paint for myself and not worry whether I'm doing it correctly according to others or selling them although I do. My main source of information is KZbin and you are my "go-to" guy. I am so happy when I see another of your episodes show up and have recommended your videos to a number of fellow artists (who are shy about calling themselves artists because they aren't "accomplished" compared to others). Thank you so very much. Now, something I am having trouble with - painting the curling petals in an oriental poppy. Yikes!!! Anyone have any hints?
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you can! As for poppy petals, I've never painted them but will give you the advice I would give for any subject. Spend a lot of time looking at the real thing in varying light settings (photos are ok too) paying careful attention to the values and shapes the values make. Very important.

Wow! I'm not alone. I'm 77 and identify with those other seniors. I told you before how I just began watercoloring but it is after years of not painting at all because of negativity. (my art teachers included as they taught me nothing, seriously) I'm glad to be watching your videos as they/you are very inspiring. Also, Billie's book is marvelous. Both of you are the best. I can't thank you enough for bringing the joy of painting back to me. Hugs!

Detail is my happy place as is botanical painting. Thanks to KZbin and the internet it’s easy to find and learn from many experienced artists. I started with Billy Showell’s and her wet-on-wet tutorials. Unfortunately, living in a very dry climate I found it challenging to reproduce her beautiful results. So I moved on to Anna Mason and her wet-on-dry tutorials. Love both artists techniques and learned so much. Also, learn tons from your channel. Found it early on my watercolor journal. Thank you for all you do. It is sad how many teacher’s insist there style is the best or correct way to paint.

I have enjoyed your all your recent videos! From watercolor to your handmade wood calligraphy pen holders. I purchase a carrot size pen oblique holder from Turkey and I love it. I needed a fatter pen to save my grip as I'm learning letter forms and for doing drills.... The price was right too. My interest in botanicals goes way back so I too now have this lovely book in my library to learn from. Keep doing what you do. I'm truly a fan! Have a wonderful day Steve! Artfully yours, Karla

Thank you Steve! for talking about the responses to your video. I was quite moved to discover, through you, that there are others like me. I'm 65 and you are a huge inspiration. I am getting back into art seriously after many years and watching you has taught me a lot. The videos of your other interests are wonderful and I love getting to know you that way. Keep up the good work and never doubt the impact you have. All of us need permission sometimes to be ourselves. it helps shut down the little nagging voice we many of us carry that says 'no you can't you're no good and people who say different are just being polite'. That is too often strengthened by the shoulds and supposed tos of a lot of teachers. You are a breath of fresh air. Thank you and keep posting.

Thank you again, still and forever...this morning I got out watercolor, acrylics, pens, mixed media stuff and had a ball. Let's face it I make cards and not preparing to enter a show...They make me and the ones that receive them happy. For me that's what it is all about. I was thinking maybe one day you might show a rainy scene in watercolor. And, while I'm dreaming here wooden turnings that are bigger then normal for those hands that have an aged body attached to them that cannot grip as well as the young artists can. Guess I better stop, you showed us your openness in art and life, thanks Steve.

Hey Steve, Been watching your vids for a while now, but never commented. So here goes: My name is, Linda Apple. I have been a full time artist for over 50+ years now, living off my work. To be able to do this, I had to learn to ignore what people say is "right or wrong", "good or bad". At 71 years, I still work almost everyday, loving the process. Some days I feel like doing super realistic and other days more impressionistic, doesn't matter how I do it, the main thing is "doing it". I also think variety has been one of the main things I have learned. Variety in subject matter and variety in mediums~ The challenge and love for me is coming up with a new concept/idea almost everyday, and sketching always helps to accomplish that goal and keeps inspiring me. Why limit oneself? Try everything!! Keep up with your enjoyable videos!!

I have both of the books you recommend. Billy Showell's work is astounding. Billy is a woman, btw. Lol. She's from the UK and does online classes, but I've never taken any of them. She has a KZbin channel. Watching her paint is phenomenal. I am a detail person, but I have to be in the mood. If not, my paintings look rushed or my drawings are lacking. I actually quit painting for years and have pretty much just started again at 57. I haven't sold my work, but there is interest. A professional artist I know says I should get an agent. I wouldn't know where to begin. There's a good video subject for you! Love, love, LOVE your videos!

I recently purchased Billy's book because I love botanicals and painting in detail. I believe your comments to be spot on. There are no rules in art. Our art is an expression of ourselves. I'm very new to w/c and have been playing around with oils and acrylic my whole life and I do not show my work to anyone because everyone is so judgy . The monster in law is a beautiful artist in many mediums but once told me that this or that wasn't real art and more like paint by number. So I continue to do stuff the way I want because it's all I know how but I can't bring myself to share it. Steve what a great response to the other video! I cannot tell you how many artists I know who are so frustrated by teachers that they loose their confidence and creative spark being told they are wrong and they have to do it RIGHT way (whatever that is) I have to say I upset many a teacher with waterwatercolour painting ruffled feathers when I incorporated unspun silk fibres into sections of a painting...however I did enjoy watching the teacher implode, that was 20 years ago and quite a few commissions later I'm still laughing...point is do what's feels right to you but never get to comfortable, shake thing us a bit you may add a few new tricks to your bag! hugs Heather 🤗

Hi Steve. I have always admired watercolors. I have an extremely difficult time with them since I have always used oils, acrylics and also gouache to achieve realism and heavy detail. My work is very tight and I don’t seem to be able to loosen up enough to do watercolor successfully. I have learned a lot watching your videos and the outstanding work you do. I am determined to conquer this media with your helpful and enjoyable videos.

Thanks, for sharing those comments, as it kind of cheered me up. I like details and painting them gives me a lot of happiness, and want to achieve the look and finesse compared to that of an oil painting ....Local teachers always discourage about do's and dont's, thts the reason I left the painting academy(had classes for 2 months only). I was a teacher(academics) for 16 yrs, but due to illness of mine and my dad's, left it and came to live with him. Here I took up watercolour painting(my childhood love). Now , I learn from books and online videos(such as yours).

But what I've learned from you, that practice, practice, practice will get you there. I've always had the idea that you either had talent or not... who knew that artists practice all the time. Hi Steve, thanks so much for reviewing my latest book (this is my 4th and most comprehensive) and for noticing that I am a lady :), BTW billy is a 'nic-name' from my school days and also my father's 'nic-name' ( William (Bill) Showell) which I adopted as my painting name. I have spent many years painting and teaching and one of the things i always have to explain to my students is that if you love painting then anything goes, run with the style that makes you happy; it's the only way to make the pursuit enjoyable to stick at. As we know practice is the magic word but who can practice if they feel out of sync with the style of painting they are wanting to achieve? I loosen up in my free time just for fun and to get to know about the watercolour and how it behaves, so that i can control and enjoy the results with my botanical painting. Speaking of botanical painting, we have a show here in London this fall (as you fellows say) 13th - 21st www.soc-botanical-artists.org/exhibitions/. It is one of the largest shows of it's kind and under the umbrella of this show is all botanical subjects in a wide variety of styles and mediums. The largest medium is watercolour but then we have everything from graphite to pastel, colour pencil to oil and print. One thing we celebrate at this show is confidence in your style so although the majority of work is almost photo real or high detail we also celebrate the styles that capture the love of painting nature and the world around us. I guess one thing that has spurred me on in my now 20 plus years of teaching is giving those who desire to paint in detail the permission to do so, what about the rules? they say to me, what rules? I say; if it works, use it, if you enjoy the process of painting this way then paint, paint to perfection. Best wishes Billy (billyshowell.com) Ps I love your birds we have a feeding station here in my garden that is the most wonderful thing.

Thanks Billy! So glad to hear of your teaching philosophy and right you are. I had my reservations about your book (or any botanical book) since I've seen a couple at the books store that didn't impress. But I was blown away once I received it. Very thorough and useful coverage of the subject. I'm very new to teaching. Have chosen KZbin to sort of get my feet wet. I've been a graphic designer and illustrator for over 30 years and did teach interns but teaching watercolor to novices is a whole new experience. Thanks for your comments and I can't wait to dig into your book further.

Hi Steve. Thank you for speaking up on this topic. I am new to painting (about 2 years) and have been learning mostly from KZbin. I love the look of loose but find it difficult to paint that way. I have been trying really hard but it always looks messy to me. Why do you think I have been trying so hard? You guessed it. I was told that I needed to loosen up. The heck with that. I am 58 years old and am tired of other people telling me what I should do. I LIKE painting the details and having things LOOK like what I am painting. I aspire to paint as detailed as you. Not because I should, but because I want to. I will also trace my pictures and use a light box because I would rather spend my time painting than drawing! I feel very liberated! Thank you Steve

The diversity of art is one of the things that draws me to it. From the time I was quite young, I have loved creating. Whether it was learning to sew which led to me becoming a quilter, or painting with acrylics and oils which has led me to watercolor. I love all kinds of crafting and art expression and have enjoyed trying something different now and then. I absolutely love how you paint, and also enjoy the challenges of realistic painting like Anna Mason. Trying something you haven't done before..challenging yourself to explore, has always kept my art journey exciting. Thank you for your videos and for sharing your talent and knowledge with us! :) I like the book you reviewed, and it would make a nice addition to my "library".

OK, here’s what I truly appreciate about you is the encouragement to be me, whatever that happens to be at that time. I remember as a kid my grade 2 teacher, Miss Brown insisting that I colour between the lines and not “scribbling. So I did, I even made the lines black because they must be important if I have to colour between them. Nope! Not correct. I can remember thinking that I wish. She would make up her mind. I’m 72 next month and have taken up art because I love it. I watch several KZbin videos on painting, sketching etc. and enjoy lots of different styles, eras from all around the world and cultures. But when it comes to lifting the brush I truly appreciate your approach, imagination, and skill. Realism is tremendous, and I am in awe of anyone who can bring a two dimensional image to life, but I’m more intriguing by art that makes me step in closer, not to study the brush strokes but to look around and behind the suggested image for the minute clues that just might create a story, my story of what I see, insight to the artist story or just get lost in the image. I enjoy painting rocks, rock walls etc. I love the textures, colours, highlights and shadows. I wonder about what kind of worlds might be hiding in the shadows and cracks, tucked in behind the branches and leaves. I enjoy that you let your mind wander and enjoy the journey. Few people will get it. I get it so I’m happy to be in good company. Cheers to you and cheers to the hidden worlds we seek. Bob Ide, Port Colborne Ontario,

I am just beginning to play around with watercolor. I have been a rubber stamper and scrapbooker for about 20 years. I have lots of tools (toys), inks, as well as lots of decorative papers. I'm also about to get into mixed media as well. I admire art work with detail. I have never taken art classes where one learns to sketch and so on. (I don't draw very well.) Over the last couple of years I've gotten into zen doodling. As I am a beginner at watercoloring and am not likely to get into creating in a traditional way it is encouraging to hear an artist like yourself give permission to play and create with watercolors in a non-traditional manner. Thank you.

Hi Steve, This has been great as you are with what you do. Where I am going my art teacher keeps telling me that my work is to tight. Like Denise I am older but have not been painting long. I love doing detail and was about to give up. I plan on doing my own thing now and keep going. Thank you for everything you do. 😗

I am an artist that struggle with loose painting, I am and love realistic look and find that detailing makes a huge difference in a subject. I can not say I don't like loose painting bc I have seen many great art with this technique and when ever I have tried it, I end up with detailed work. One critique I had years ago from an art gallery manager, that sticks in my mind was...."for what you do, there are cameras..." I still don't know how to analyzed that, but I decided that realism is my thing. Your videos are informative in all aspects and I thank you for that because I am a self-taught artist and have to confess, I don't know many things about materials, paint and brushes.....so thank you again!!! your Mexican friend, Sue ;)

I have this book and I think she really has a great hold on how to mix colours. Even without painting botanicals, anyone can utilize the information from the book and get their paints to the right mixes using Billy's charts. I use it to help my students find the right mixes and get vibrant and non-muddy colours.

Dear Steve! I also need to say "thank you" as I have been really enjoying all of your videos many months ago. It is so great how you are taking effort and time to share your experiences with us. I also like to see your home and natural environment and I always smile. laugh less or more but definitely do, cos you can be so funny by your own way, however you are a reliable, great and serious artist as well, obviously. :) I appretiate how you hold your responsibility and care what and how you tell us. Thanks again and greetings from Scotland. Robert ;)

Hi Steve, I'm a big fan. I've posted your tutorials on my own art page. I enjoy your art and the way you present it. Hey, so I was wondering. Can you do a tutorial on using watercolor to paint white flowy objects like flower petals? I have such a hard time with highlights and shadows on white objects. Thanks!!

I totally agree with you. Painting in any medium should be an expression of your own soul. Rules are made to be broken. It's so easy to criticise and bruise another's soul. Ignore them and fly free.

Hi Steve, I'm Paul a full time wildlife artist from the UK, i don't normally post so it doesn't look like I'm advertising etc... but in this case I just had to. Like you love to paint in detail. One thing I do say to my students is paint as much detail as 'you' want to, any tutorials you follow can be approached in the same way. So if you get to a place where you feel 'that's enough for me' and you are happy with the painting, then sign it, frame it and give yourself a pat on the back for another painting well done. :-) Thank you for posing these questions to your followers on here (including me), these are those kind of things that some traditional painters are really strict on especially where black and white paint are concerned, however as said everyone is different and we all paint in our own way which in turn makes us all individuals! Paul . :-)

Thank you for this! I missed the video you are talking about and will be heading there now. I have 2 of Billy's books and love them both. Even if someone doesn't like to paint that realistically the books still give great information to help improve ones techniques. I am also a subscriber to her school but have only painted from one of her tutorials. I kind of fall somewhere between loose and detailed so her style is a bit too tight for me but her instruction is wonderful, as is yours. I have been watching your videos since I started painting again.

Hello steve! My name is Nathalie Desforges from Canada. After receiving a quill from my step daughter last christmas, it started an old flame of mine. I started drawing in details (Elvis pictures kind you, lol) when I was maybe 12 or 13 yrs old and this is just the way I am, I just need the details. So i started calligraphy and fRom there i went to brush pens and saw watercolor mixed with brush pen calligraphy and thought Hey I can do that! So i bought cheap watercolor to try it out and i just coulnt stop there. Looked for help on the web and there you were. Just awesome! So i started to draw again after maybe thirty something yrs and I still have the old habbit to draw in details and therefore the same with painting. I started with a hummingbird and couldn't stop myself from adding details but in the back of my mind , I thought no you can't add too much details as watercolor is supposed to be loose! But hey! I dont care, i do it because I need to go in my zone or bubble some would say to get away from all around me (I take care of my father who is what we think starting dementia and i also have fibromyalgia). It relaxes me and as you said takes me to my zen place sort of like meditating and when I draw, I just can't wait to start to paint it. I enjoy watching your vlogs and happy when I see a new one. The quality of your videos and showing us the outside of your housewith the birds, the music, thumbs up! Just awesome, you make my day. Btw I prefer doing birds and flowers especially peonies cuz of so many details, call me crazy! 😜 To those who say watercolor should be a certain way. Art is suppose to be your own thing not someone elses, way to go Steve and hope you will be here for a very long time. I am grateful for your vlogs. Wish you would do more birds and flowers in details! Lol

Hi Steve. Sometimes life just gets in the way and finding time to paint is difficult. However I can always manager a few minutes just before work or on my lunch break to watch one of your videos. One of the best things I like about your videos are the intros. You welcome us into your home and studio, your happy place, and make us feel right at home. I especially like the intro to this one. Bringing the outside in was brilliant. Also the video quality is excellent. Would you mind sharing what camera you use. Looking forward to tomorrow's lunch break when I can escape to my car that often serves as my little happy place. Thanks, Eddie

Thanks so much Eddie! On this one I primarily used a Sony a5100. Its my go to vlogging camera. Sony is killing it (in a good way) with video these days. In other videos I use a Canon Vixia camcorder (studio head shots), Pentax DSLR (for overhead board shots) and even a GoPro. All produce nice footage.

I subscribe to Billy Showell's web tutorials. She has a great teaching style. I also recommend Anna Mason's web page. Both artists do very detailed realistic watercolors but their techniques are really different. Applying their respective techniques to my own has really broadened my approach to watercolor and reignited my passion for painting. I really enjoy your reviews and videos. Thanks.

Maria Montgomery me too! I'm subscribed to both and a few others but Billy Showell I've been a subscriber for a year and a half. I love her style and teaching method!! Anna is great too but the two are polar opposites for realistic botanical artists. I'm subscribed to a few other artists whom are not as well known and sell tutorials for each tutorial. There is one artist Brynn Carol whom I'm really looking forward to releasing her classes!!! She won't do what Billy and Anna do she is selling each painting as a class so hopefully they won't be an arm and a leg because I really like her style. She is in KZbin, check her out.

I'm a pre-pharm major and I recently chose to take an ethnobotany class to fulfill my Botany credit and it really opened up a new world for me. I've been dying to paint botanical art work for weeks now, but I am mostly a portrait artist and I have little experience. This book seems like a great way to get started and let loose some stress.

for newbies, show them a few ways for them to choose is the best way. later on, they can decide which way they prefer. when I started watercolor, I add other media so I could cover my mistakes for example, add black too much. now, im getting better with watercolor but still use other media such as white pen. this shows that there are more likely you going to grab other media even you try to use only watercolor.

I love Billy Showell's online classes!!! I've subscribed to her classes for about a year and a half give or take. Same thing with Ana masons online classes. Brynn Carol (check her out in KZbin) is supposed to be releasing her classes soon too but not as a subscription but to buy each project separately. All three of the artists for being realistic botanical watercolorists are all vastly different! I also take a few classes from other botanical watercolorists but they aren't as well known and very good but I wish they did subscriptions like Billy and Anna.

Hey Steve! If you are talking about the rain this past Sunday and Monday, yeah we had it too here in Franklin and Wake Counties in North Carolina. The Tar and Neuse Rivers are at flood stage..6 inches in my guage here in Louisburg, Franklin County... anyway... I love your videos. I paint in watercolor too, and I love to paint flowers detailed and "tight" as they say. Love it! i'm not botanical per say, but I love detailed painting. I also like painting looser too, maybe a mix in the same painting. I have this book and it is wonderful and useful. thanks for your videos. Keep up the good work!

Hi Steve. I just found this video and had to respond. I subscribed to your channel about 6 months ago......I think....Hmmmm. Anyway, I'm 71 now and just again started drawing. I took a Biological Illustration class when I went back to school to get my Botany degree (when I was 40). I absolutely loved it, but it is very definitely a detail oriented art. I tried art at different times in my life, like when I was a kid, in high school and when I first went to college. But there it was, that negative feedback that others here have talked about. I felt that I just wasn't an artist and it was frustrating. The Biological Illustration teacher (a marine biologist who had to learn it) was a great teacher and had me actually drawing. Wow!! But when I started working it was too stressful to learn to draw and live the rest of my life too. When I retired I found that I had time to draw and found ways to do it more simply, which was a great start. From then on I've been self taught. Well, now I've got KZbin with you on it and I have learned so much. Right now I'm painting...………….the walls in my house! LOL My house has turned upside down and been twirled around and there's no place to sit and do any art work. So, I'll finish the painting, get everything re-arranged and then start in on practicing what I've been watching you do with watercolor. I'm looking forward to that. Thanks so much for your videos.

a good artwork as elements of detail and loose work that are in sink to create the overall image and just painting in one way can stifle creative expression. some art medias naturally work well in loose or tight styles so you just go with it.

So thankful to have found you sir! Yes, I saw the rant video. LOVED it! Have always been a detail person myself but wound up moving away from watercolors because of "teachers". Looks like I wasn't the only one. Anyway, colored pencil has been my "thing" when I've had time to do any art. But always promised myself I'd try "loose" watercolor again one day. Seems my idea was a good one... you see I cared for my parents for 15 years. The last 10 just my mother with parkinsons and dementia during the last 4 years of her life. It would seem minutia is one of the early markers of parkinsons as well as some other similar cruel fates. (apologies for the long winded meadering) So my reasoning is that if I "exercise" my brain with loose abstract painting it might help retrain parts of my brain that may be leaning towards a path similar to my mother's. Flexibility is a major key in all things. Art is certainly no exveption! Thank you so much for letting me "rant" a bit and huge amounts of gratitude for you being you. Keep on creating!
