Welcome to the second of this two part watercolor workshop, taking viewers through the process of painting a Rose Botanical. This is the second watercolor workshop I did for Strathmore last Spring and the fourth video overall. So in case you missed it, I did a two video watercolor landscape workshop which can be seen here at these links.

The key for all who are beginning to watercolor, and with me being just over 3 months in my own beginning, is to just have the courage to fail. Try doing these things that are being shown to us and have fun making your mistakes, get them out of the way, and learn from them. And keep stretching yourself, keep moving forward with your craft. And be sure to give Steve "The Mind of Watercolor" Mitchell major props for sharing and helping to smooth out the learning curve. Thanks Steve for you talent and philosophy of this wonderful (and often frustrating) art form.

I really enjoy watching and learning from your various videos. You present a variety of subject matter such that I can choose what to paint based on my preferences. You offer information in a way that is easy to understand (not always easy to apply, especially with watercolors). However, you give us the tools to try to improve our work and learn from actually making our own mistakes with watercolors. Thank you for your talents and expertise.

This is absolutely stunning Steve, you are so clever. I’m not sure that I would ever get such a result even with your excellent tutorial. To even attempt it at the moment would definitely be a “run before I can walk” scenario lol.. however I’ve really started to notice the light and shadows around me and am starting to gain a little confidence. It’s wonderful to watch you paint and see the results that I might achieve one day with a little more patience and lots and lots of practice. Thank you as ever.

Thank you Steve, it's always a pleasure watching your content! Could you consider filming your palette beside your drawing board as well (while painting)? It would help so much to see how you handle the logistics of the palette; mixing of the paints, water control and all that. A part of the craftsmanship side of painting with watercolors that rarely is shown. Thanks again!
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 7 жыл бұрын
I've been asked many times. The reason so few artists show their palette is that its really difficult to see whats actually happening with the water & paint with any instructive benefit (you can't tell how wet a brush is and how concentrated the color is in the brush on video) plus it requires a separate camera and doubles the editing time and effort. In other words a lot of extra work for the video creator with almost no added benefit for the viewer. Especially on KZbin, where content must be turned out quite frequently.

I have a sunset rose watercolor that I shelved a few months ago because I was fighting with the light/shadow/highlight transitions too much. Going to pull it out and take another run at it. Thanks so much for this workshop, Steve! In your second pass, do you deepen or thicken the watercolor mix at all or does it remain the loose watery mix from your first pass?

Hi Steven, love your videos, i also just started with watercolor and like your techniques. Was wonder what you do with your finished paintings afterwards, meaning, how you do store them and how you display them. Was also wondering how you frame your work and preserve the painting self from color fading.

I thoroughly enjoyed these two videos which were an interesting change from your looser landscape work. When I have attempted to paint in this style, unsuccessfully I might add, I find the pencil marks spoil the results. Do you erase the pencil guides after you have established your early glazes? Many thanks again for sharing your skills and enthusiasm.

@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 7 жыл бұрын
Winsor Newton Cotman paints and Van Gogh Watercolors are two I've used and aren't terrible as student grade paints go. I can't really recommend any others because I've not used any. For beginner brushes that are inexpensive, I like the Zen or Espresso brushes by Royal Langnickel. If you have a Hobby Lobby nearby, their Golden Taklon or synthetic Squirrel brushes aren't bad and you can usually wait for a 50% off sale. Again, there may be others but I've had experience with those.

I am new to watercolour and am grateful for your many insights and your graceful means of presenting them. I have happily become a patron on Patreon. I have a question about this video - you said going back to glaze is in multiple passes is no problem if you use the same colour (15:36) . Does this mean that as you mix up and use colours in the course of a painting you must save a pool of each one for use in subsequent layers?
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 4 жыл бұрын
Its helpful yes. And the pools can dry on your palette for later use. The colors can be analogous (if you don't know that term, Google it), they don't have to be exact.

Very interesting Steve. But ... how did they do this in the past, I mean some centuries ago, when there were no photos yet? When I use a real flower as my reference, I see it change during the time I am painting. The light changes, the petals open up, etc. All of that in only a few hours 🤔
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 6 жыл бұрын
They handled that in all sorts of ways. Quick references sketches and studies that could be done in 5 to 10 minutes was a common way. They would also study the flower structure and value patterns so they could pretty much draw from memory or without constant reference.
