Botanical Gardens of the Las Vegas Springs Preserve |

Springs Preserve is a picturesque outdoor botanical garden in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada. If you want to see how cacti and other desert plants look growing in habitat, without actually being out in habitat, this is the place to be. I guess I can say they are in habitat since Las Vegas is part of the Mojave desert. Plants here all grow outdoors, exposed to the extreme desert weather. They get a little extra care during the summer (some supplemental watering and pest management) just to keep the plants alive and looking presentable for the public. But for the most part, they are thriving on their own. The gardens show drought-tolerant plants such as cactus, agave, aloes, yucca, some of which are native in Nevada.

I can only guess the age of those mature ones but definitely, at least a century. There were even barrel cacti that I may say are close to that age, too. These plants are hard grown so they grow slower. For them to reach that size, it took many decades.

This is really a great place!!! Would love just to hang out there and soak it all in!!! Very surprised at the variety of succulents there!! The opuntias are spectacular!!! Very awesome tour Ana!!! We’ve had plenty of cold days and rain in spring this year. Flowers are developing much later. When I was there last week, I only saw one or 2 cacti in bud. I think late April or early May will be when the flowers start showing.

I did not see any irrigation pipes or sprinklers. But I’m pretty sure they do supplemental watering during summer. We have not had a decent rain here in 2 years. Some of those cacti look too plump to just rely on our very rare rainfall. 😉
