@@dysnomia-anarchia It should be obvious that I am referring to the current group of people who do it for a hobby. If I seemed to make the claim that this group was the first in history to operate something by remote control using a video feed from the vehicle being controlled that was not my intention. But I don't think anyone took it that way and it had nothing to do with the meaning or point of the comment. It was largely done to encourage people like Botgrinder to not give up an activity that they love and to do it despite what is being done to them. But I'm sure anyone with the intelligence to operate a keyboard and be on the Internet would deduce that is really all that mattered in the meaning of the thread.

FPV as a hobby won't be banned outright but regulation will probably evolve like the early days of radio before the FCC and the big broadcast corporations. Radio started out as an unregulated hobby that eventually became overregulated to point of requiring a license for everything, including CB radio. But CB enforcement proved impractical so that requirement was eventually dropped, as long as you broadcast on certain frequencies below a certain wattage. FPV as a hobby will survive whatever paper tigers come its way, just as amateur radio did.

Interesting analogy, but FCC heavy handedness is really about regulating a very finite resource - the practical usable radio spectrum. Frequency and bandwidth are rare commodities.

A bit more context from another pilot who has been in since 2016: I had a conversation with a relative at thanksgiving about drones. Here, they banned drones from flying in my city around 2020 because of one guy being a dick with his DJI crap and terrorizing a friend of the mayor. Despite all the protesting from us, they passed the ban. I was speaking to a relative about this and how unfair it is to be lumped in with this bs because of one guy who isn't even a part of our community in fpv, and they said they agreed with the ban! "I don't want some stranger looking at me while I'm in my backyard, or whatever." I tried to detail the difference between what I do and what that guy did, but they didn't want to hear it. They insisted that the ban was for the best and I should just suck it up and move on. This is the mentality we are fighting. This is only going to get worse thanks to the hype that Botgrinder is pointing out in this video. The commenters in here are just as correct as bot, though. This hobby is officially dead. Not completely. It will never completely go away, but the days of us flying where we want and enjoying ourselves with fpv are coming to an end. Get used to the harassment and hate because it's about to get real sticky. People will still fly, regardless of the way things turn out. However, this hobby will never be the same again, now. So much for living in a free country. We're only free until we do something someone else doesn't like. Then all bets are off... Have fun. Enjoy yourself. Just don't be surprised when the Karens or cops show up to ruin it.

My dad got into fixed wing (including 3d planes) because the po po kept getting called on him and his buddies for flying their quads at parks and schools and all their fly spots got shut down. He’s in his late 70s and his buddies are working dudes in their late 40s to mid 50s, obviously not threatening. But he is having a blast with fixed wing line of sight, and I’ve got into it with him too and it actually is fun. Crashing tends to destroy airframes but they are pretty repairable with the right glues. The electronics seems to do fine although some people get nervous reusing gear after bad crashes. Idk, send it lol. Note: they all fly at an AMA field ( I fly after hours when the club is gone). I also fly sub250 3d foam plane at my local park, and I’ve got a couple RID modules and my stuff registered to avoid FAA trouble if I do get the itch to fly somewhere random (after checking the fly maps for no fly and temporary restrictions).

Ground FPV is so underrated to me. It allows you to do all the things drones can't. I was automatically drawn to it over drone FPV just due to the impending possibilities.. I mean you can literally make your own long range avatar these days. I put a gel blaster on one and had way too much fun driving around shooting things with it. I think the coolest thing ever is a good RC truck that can go off road almost anywhere and includes all the basic stuff like live 2 way audio, lights, horn, stabilizing gimbal etc.. With something like the *MT12 it opens up doors to add more cool stuff like robot arms etc. You can get close to an hour or more of run time on a charge so there's no constantly swapping packs etc. Can just sit somewhere and spy (zoom camera in the future would be cool). Interacting with people or dogs is a lot easier and less troublesome, you can get real close up steady shots of things, you're not always making tons of noise, can drive them around at night easily, and snafus don't typically result in the thing dropping to its death or getting stuck in an unreachable place etc. One of the coolest things is driving around a decent sized park just sitting in your car out of sight. Hitting all the paths and seeing different people lol. Many of them are turning heads trying to find the person controlling it etc. A little honk or wheel wave and keep it moving. I've snuck into some pretty cool places before using a sensored rig to where I could creep real quiet. Some place where they have an overhead door open just enough to creep under, or somewhere that is fenced off but there is just enough clearance. At the very least I always thought it would be cool for drone guys to build an RC truck purpose-built for going over and picking up drones they crashed. I guess that would save a lot of exercise though lol.
@orbotik20 күн бұрын
building your own drone is the way. DJI is the apple of drones. Total corporate control, no privacy, babying, but... nice R2R features. Some people gravitate to that, and if that gets them into drones, so be it, but as a community hopefully we can show people a better way.
@Rocketman040719 күн бұрын
I love DJI and I also hate them. It sucks how it got too many people to fly drones making regulations. DJI does have the best Software I would say though. I feel like it’s the Apple of drones for good and bad while FPV drones are like a Linux computer. “Normies” will probably not get into FPV unless it gets ridiculously easy. Most consumers are lazy as f. They just want something easy out of the box. In theory a user friendly FPV BNF could be built using INav with Position hold and return to home enabled. Then get a gimbal for the camera. However most people would get scared of just having to choose the correct controller or battery. So it would have to truely be a BNF with absolutely everything needed.

Most of my builds are broken from crashes and I haven't had the motivation to fix em. What a way to end 2024.

You'll probably get a few more years of fpv flying in Canada before we catch up. Just come hangout.

Gosh the states had an airplane crash into a building once and now everything from the sky is either a terrorist or aliens.

I'll just keep doing what I want (flying), where I want, when I want. Let's keep as much as possible open source!

I use DJI for the FPV system in my quadcopter. However, I use the V1 goggles and Air Unit. They don't make these anymore so I get them all used so DJI doesn't get my money, and they don't have GPS in them since they all came out before all this RID stuff. It can be a bit of a pain getting it to work with some frames as everything these days is made to use the new O3 Air unit, but with some work it runs just fine.

I don't care if they ban FPV. I'm still flying FPV.

I’m also into RC boats. I did this crazy mod to mine, it has 4 propellors and can hover above the water.
