Just a heads up with that Chevy Tahoe that you bought, aka the Cadillac short wheelbase, the full-time all-wheel drive is based on the borg-warner 4473 transfer case, they like to puke out their seal in the input shaft and contaminate your transmission fluid. If that transmission was replaced at 77,000 miles, the transfer case is likely going bad and needs to be replaced before ruins your new transmission. You generally can't replace the seal because it's part of the bushing and the bushing is pressed into the front half of the transfer case.
@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 Жыл бұрын
That was most likely the reason the transmission was replaced.
@chubbysumo2230
@chubbysumo2230 Жыл бұрын
@@knurlgnar24 I have a GM all wheel drive cargo van that has the same all-wheel drive setup as these, and the input shaft seal failed on the transfer case, and the input shaft actually ate into the front half of the case. The transmission fluid got contaminated with the shiny bits from the transfer case, because it literally pushed the output shaft seal of the transmission in. It then ruined my transmission.
@MrPaxio

@@chubbysumo2230 seems about average for a GM vehicle. it wasnt ruined, thats just a feature once your warranty expires. always baffles me, hundreds of thousands of engineers work on these, and youre telling me all of them have no idea how to make it not implode? yah right
@chubbysumo2230
@chubbysumo2230 Жыл бұрын
@@MrPaxio it's actually a little more complex than that, it's a balancing act between cost and viability. The manufacturer only wants to put in enough cost to get it to last through the warranty. The engineer wants to make it bulletproof. More of a delicate Balancing Act of how much can the engineer tweeze in that the customer will actually pay for. Remember, some manufacturers went overboard on bulletproofing their engines, and it raised the price of the vehicle so much that it pushed out all of the buyers that normally would purchase that vehicle. The Toyota Supra is a very good example of this. The 2jzgte was extremely overbuilt by toyota. It also pushed the cost of the car up Beyond where the average buyer for that type of vehicle would pay, which killed sales. I would say in the case of the Borg Warner 4473 transfer case the parts reuse is really what hurted the most. The outer casing is the same across basically all 2002 to 2015 GM transfer cases, it just depended on what holes were drilled out. The flaw in the design is that the input shaft seal is pressed into the case, and when it fails because it is an interference fit, it usually takes out the front case half with it. This could have been engineered around, they could have improved it, but that would mean re-engineering the castings that are already made, and on top of that that would also mean added cost to the customer that the customer may not want to pay. The obvious compromise is that if they didn't make it through the warranty, GM had to eat the cost. And this happened a lot, that's why it's a very well-known flaw of the transfer case in particular listed here, and the bushing itself is non-replaceable, as you cannot get it out of the Magnesium or aluminum case without damaging the case.
@MrPaxio
@MrPaxio Жыл бұрын
@@chubbysumo2230 the 2jz is over built because its ment to handle 1000 horse power. thats the reason its been over built, cos they knew people would be modifying them. they're not gonna put double turbos on that cadillac. they don't need to over engineer it in that way, but they certainly didnt even make it last under its own weight it needs to pull to be considered a regular vehicle. toyota did it, they build SUVs, why can't GM? let alone when you put two turbos on it.

There is a gigantic difference between the two, and they should not be even mentioned in the same paragraph. As a matter of fact, the Escalade, and junk like it, typify the reason why GM has slid from being the largest corporation in the World, and one of the most important cars makers once. GMT800 is peak GM truck. The GMT400 is nice but it and everything before were just building up. The GMT900 and later are generic and cheap inside. Not that the GMT800 isn't full of cheap plastic but the 800 feels better. The 800 has some of the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in. They're thickly padded leather thrones. After that era of GM ended they made all their seats hard with stiff leather or cloth stretched over them. I want to sit in my seat, not on it. The 800 has a modern engine without the 900's active fuel management that would burn out camshafts at 100k. The only thing that can kill them is rust. Also, it was last generation with barn doors, though not available on the Escalade.

When you give up on classic Cadillacs, you should move on to classic Jaguars. Jaguar owners have three cars, all the same model: one in the shop, one broken in the yard waiting for the shop to have time to fix it, and one you're driving every day. Believe me, I know this from experience.

The title is spot on you continue shelling out enough money to buy 2.5 plaids for old ICE trash with the hopes it will be worth more not less going forward and dealing with how bad they are arguable as bad as the lighting.

A buddy bought one brand new..... loved the power back then. Cadillac had to replace the entire front axle under warranty after we had a big blizzard.... I think has been trouble free ever since.

I LOVE MY 2011 CTS COUPE IT IS ONE OF MY TOP 10 FAVORITE CARS OF ALL TIME !!! I pull it out and drive it for a few hours around the city on the weekends when the weather is nice about 30 times a year. (if that) it just sits in the garage 95% of the year lol.

Some of those had weak differential bushings. So they sell polyurethane kits to stop them from ripping. Be careful if it has a poly bushing it will make noise no matter what it would sound like a slight gear wine. Oem bushing would fix that. ItWorth checking…

These are the last good years of gm when you could still buy something relatively reliable and AMERICAN. Not just a stupid copy of a sporty european car. Cushy pillowy seats, silky smooth v8, and a smooth ride.

The previous owner of that Escalade saw the check engine light come on, traded it in to the dealer, the dealer cleared the codes and put a dirt cheap price tag on it hoping some sucker would snap it up before the OBD2 lit the CEL again. Always plug into the OBD2 and make sure it's run a full diagnostic cycle before buying a used vehicle, so stuff like this doesn't happen.

I have read that the deal with AC Delco filters is that they are sourced from different countries and the quality control varies even among same numbers.

Was going to ask about that. Seems like every time I buy new ones, the filter and packaging look cheaper/flimsier every time. They now look like fakes!

And articulating headrests on GMC and Cadi. Headrests at the ear height in case a lil old Buick decides to tap your bumper. Swap the air filter and keep driving. All lights in steering wheel controls still illuminate? Do the driver seat controls all work?

Diff noise is par for the course on Gen2 CTS-Vs. Either GM or the diff maker didn't properly fill them with fluid after assembly and caused premature wear. Diff on my 2012 Vagon moans during slow turns in neighborhoods. And that's even after a dealer drained and refilled it under warranty.

My daily is a 1993 7.3 IDI NA & for abt the last few months the oil pan gasket had been getting bad. My oil cooler was leaking, so my dad & I resealed that then literally a few months after the oil pan started leaking. I fix one oil leak then another starts. Because of this I check my oil nearly every time I go to start the truck & keep 2 extra was of oil in it. Always keep extra oil in an old Diesel that’s not a HEUI injected motor that’ll shut itself off with no oil pressure.
