@danroberts9050 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, and what's so interesting is he never wanted to be a singer. He was a drummer. But when Peter Gabriel left the band they interviewed about 200 singers and didn't like any of them. Then one day Bill Bruford suggested that he (Collins) become the singer and Bruford agreed to drum for one concert tour until they could replace him full time. That's what they did and the rest is history.

We lived in rural Louisiana when this song came out and had gotten a 10 ft satellite dish the year before loaded with all the cable and network channels, live feeds sent to studios, and more. MTV was amazing back then for me as an isolated rural singer, keyboard player, and drummer who had been so restricted on music by the very limited selection on radio and network TV. It blew our minds! Before I sat by an FM radio night after night and also had a cassette boombox to get album debuts they played at midnight sometimes. I got the second Van Halen record that way.

Thank you for this great upload. My special thanks go to a cab driver in New York. Phil Collins told this story about the creation of this musical milestone. Phil was sitting in a cab in New York in the summer of 1982 and the cab driver played the song "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five loudly. In this song there is always a repeated "ah huh-huh-huh". According to Phil, he has had the "ah huh-huh-huh" in his head ever since. When he wrote Mama, he integrated this "ah huh huh huh" in his typical way. That was the ultra-short version I remember of the birth of "Mama". This cab driver should be memorialized. If it hadn't been for him, "Mama" would probably never have existed in this form. Of course, my thanks also go to Edward G. Fletcher, Melle Mel Clifton "Jiggs" Chase and Sylvia Robinson for the song „The Message“. The latter is known from "The Sugarhill Gang" who actually brought hip hop and breakdancing to the people with their anthem "Rapper's Delight" in 1979. Servus from Bavaria

Wow, Phil really belted out this song. He was at the height of his powers then. Kinda sad to see him now, with his back issues. May he find healing soon.

My favorite Genesis song and what a OUTSTANDING performance!!! It’s one of those songs that has a lot of minor parts that come together and the band does it so well! Most of all, the vocals are SO POWERFUL! This is certainly one of Phil Collin’s best vocal performances and every time I hear it, it is even stronger than the previous performance! WOW!!!!!!

That's the secret of Life... No one moment will ever be duplicated. Put it into human history over thousands of years and you can not feel other than blessed if you were one of the lucky ones present at this concert. This frame of mind can be applied to most things in life.
