Boy this bring back memories. We have had cows that for one reason or another we had to take the new born calf from her and bottle feed it. If a cow doesn't get her calf back within 3 days she will reject it. She won't let it suck and hook it away. That is when you have to bottle feed it. We used the Purina powered milk formula. I remember one calf we bottle fed. It would go with the heard all the way to the back pasture about 2 1/2 miles from the house. About 2:00PM each day the calf would break away from the heard and head to the house. You could he it bellow, hanging it's head across the fence. That was when I would get a bottle ready and feed it. I remember one day the calf sucked the bottle dry in about a minute. I went over to the water faucet and filled the bottle up with water. The calf sucked it down again. I filled the bottle up again and the calf figured it out that wasn't milk and shook it's head. I got a good laugh from that. Living on a ranch is a lot of fun. You can go fishing, ride horses and go hunting. I moved to Houston and when I tell these city people the stories they just listen in unbelief.

A good thing to do with a calf like that is next time you get a dead calf or pull a dead calf is skin that dead calf and put it on your poddy calf. Then put your calf with the dead calf's skin on it in a yard with the heifer that lost her calf. The heifer will smell the skin and think its hers and then accept it. The action of a calf drinking from the heifer shrinks the uteris and helps expel the after birth as well as relieves her full udder. You may have to put her in the crush (chute) the first time and make sure the calf drinks.. I tie the skin on with a few strings similar to a horse rug. Leave the skin on the calf for a couple of days then take it off and the heifer will raise that like its her own.

Is that a special formula for baby cows or is it the same as dried up milk? WOuld it be safe to give a baby cow whole milk from the store? just wondering.
@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
Yes this is a special formula designed specifically for calves. I suppose you could give them whole milk but it wouldn’t be very cost effective and difficult to store the quantity you would need to have on hand. Good question! Thank you

little off topic but what are you using for a camera?
@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
iPhone 8. It’s was really windy so that’s why the audio isn’t the greatest, assuming that’s why you’re asking? Might be time to get a real camera
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms37545 жыл бұрын
didn't even notice wind noise. when your wife and baby were at the chair you put a grey fluffy thing like a mic to the baby. looked like the same grey hair that others use for mics. don't think my camera is holding me back but wouldn't mind doing something better?
@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I did buy a mic for the phone, main reason was, ironically, to help reduce wind noise! So I guess it’s working somewhat. If it’s really windy the mic still makes a “crackly” noise that I can hear in a few clips but overall it does help. Just search “iPhone microphone “ or “cell phone microphone “ on Amazon if you want one. They’re pretty cheap

Another thing I do with these calves is buy a dairy cow and foster them onto her. Most dairy cow will take a stray calf and they always have enough milk. I've had four calves on one cow several times over the year., Then just join her with the rest of the mob in the spring and she can have her own calf or if you don't want to, sell her and get your money back. The whole exercise has then cost nothing to rear your calf.
