How heavy should the sinker be to just maintain bottom contact in deep, fast water? I need specific ounces (3/4 ounce?)
@thundermistlures3 жыл бұрын
it depends on the strength of the current and how deep you are fishing, but 3/4 oz in general, in the Niagara river, is a good start :)

Hi Ivo. Another great video. Just wondering what length you run your dropper line and what length you run your line to the hook? Thanks
@thundermistlures7 жыл бұрын
as a general rule, use about 2 feet to your sinker and 20 inches to your hook....many people use a short dropper line to their sinker (like a few inches) and then a long leader to their hook - that system works well also, but you tend to get more snags :)

Hey man, I’ve recently become a big fan of your page I love the content on fresh water fishing. I’m from the Bahamas so I’m use to saltwater fishing however I recently moved to St Catharine’s I frequent this spot a lot but with little success what set up do you think is best for fishing that deep fast moving water? Particularly looking to target a nice walleye or catfish I usually carry two rods with me one just to leave in the water and the other I try to troll and jig for the walleye.
@thundermistlures Жыл бұрын
For walleye, you can jig in that current just like we do in the Detroit River, and that is, straight up and down. You can jig a stingnose jigging spoon tipped with an eye drop with great success - use the 1 3/4 size and drop it straight down and start jigging - if the current is lighter, you can use a 1 oz and the stingnose minnow or peanut bunker are both great choices. you can also use the 1 oz Flexi Jig with the Skoolie Minnow and again, drop it straight down and just bounce/jig it off the bottom as you drift - you should do great!!

When does the steelhead fishing pick up at the port? Was fishing there friday but not many fish were showing up on the fish finder and didnt see anyone catching anything. And is it worth fishing there after dark because with the time change and work schedule by the time I make it there its already getting dark.
@thundermistlures7 жыл бұрын
dusk and dawn are best, but you can also catch them all day long.....the fishing is good right now and will be all winter as well...not sure why Friday was not a good day as the fish are on right now.....but perhaps the water was too murky?
@brandonmclean587 жыл бұрын
hmm, maybe the fish are too close to the bottom to be picked up on a fish finder, not sure if that is a thing or not. The salmon showed up pretty well when they were there. Maybe, the fish arnt as big, plus the water is always murky and they are close to the bottom. Maybe thats why they arent showing up on a fish finder? I was only there for a couple hours, I cant say for sure no one caught anything, just not that I noticed.I barely had any fish come up on the sonar compared to how it was there a month or 2 ago. I wonder if they become more active after a good rain. Either way Im not interested in putting my kayak away yet.

Probably should be prepared to keep the trout if you bottom fish for them. They tend to swallow the hook. I'm usually not concerned about killing a trout as I usually take most trout home to eat

Haha I have walleye down pat, Smallmouth bass, crappie, and catfish are no problem either. But, I just cannot seem to get the hang of steelhead fishing. I just don't have the knowledge of experience yet really. I feel like such a waste because many anglers would KILL to be in my position, and they'd make awesome with the fishing I have around me. Lol

I love fishing at Port but there are some real pricks there to. Like today some guy was drifting into my retrieves I was running stick bait on a three way because its been effective for me. And he says yeah anywhere whose been there today has been causing me to snag up. In a rude voice like he owns port dalhousie then him and his friend keep looking at me the entire time and when I went to switch rods at the car and came back he was pointing me out again because they got excited and thought I was leaving. I just get upset when people act like they own the shores.

sinker is what>> 24 inches from the snap and the hook line is what 12 Inches???
@thundermistlures6 жыл бұрын
...sinker is about 24 inches and the hook can be 2 - 4 inches above the sinker...the key with this rig is to have the sinker about 2 - 4 inches below the hook :)
@dennisedwards89545 жыл бұрын
@@thundermistlures ? If the drop line to the sinker is 24 inches and the hook line tied to the "T" then, distance from hook to sinker IS the length of the drop line.... (Learning here. Haven't really fished much since childhood.) What did I misunderstand where you say a 24 inch drop line gives a 2 - 4 (inch) distance between sinker and hook? Maybe the operative words are "can be."
@thundermistlures5 жыл бұрын
@@dennisedwards8954 Hi Dennis Edwards - We like to run a slightly longer line to the sinker as opposed to the hook line. For example, if the line to the sinker is 24 inches, then the line to your hook can be 22 inches. This will allow you to bottom bounce the sinker while keeping the hook off the bottom, but still in the strike zone - hope this helps :)

And THAT folks is why you don't bottom bounce for these fish, or use such large hooks. If you cant fish for these properly with a pin reel and float, stick to your bass and catfish. Sorry for the elitist attitude but suck it up.
@bradmoulton25857 жыл бұрын
Billy C can you clarify what you mean by "fishing for them properly"?? Bottom bouncing AND float fishing are both proper ways to fish for trout. Bottom bouncing is the more challanging way to fish for them because of the amount of times you can get caught up and snagged in the rocks. Just curious as to what you meant

Yes, Billy C your post does read elitist. Please educate me, sincerely, because I truly do not have much fishing technique knowledge thus quite limited experience. I want to learn so while I soak up the insights I find a Thundermist et al, I relish others' insight such as your own. Educate me, bitte. I "fathom" that drop shotting and pinning both are methods of getting terminal tackle at depths for presentation to Dora. How she ingests that terminal tackle or how deeply ain't up to you nor me nor Thundermist. I'm kinda grasping the importance of hook size but, that too, is somewhat grey to me. A smaller hook or larger one in the mouth the diameter of a chrome, brown, bass or like sized fish seems equally subject to swallowing. Potential damage seems of equal risk to Dora if she swallows vs just taking it on her lip. Gotta lot to learn my few years yet to come and I can learn something from both elitists and non.
