In the past, everyone envied the rapid acceleration of these luxury sports cars, which only took 4 or 3 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. Now, a $40,000 electric car can accelerate in 3 seconds. It is unimaginable that you can experience the acceleration of a luxury sports car that used to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars at 1/4 or 1/5 of the price. The uniqueness and appeal of fuel luxury sports cars are decreasing.

Yet, those that can , still gladly pay $50K for a Rolex even though its keeps worse time than an Apple Watch and you cant watch movies on it. I think we should not confuse the democratisation of Vehicle performance due to the possibilities offered by a Cheapo EV powertrain, with TRUE luxury, prestige and status symbolism. That a 40K XIAOMI has the same performance as a 200K Porsche is clear, but does it make the driver of the Xiaomi as "cool" and admired as the Porsche driver, certainly not. The luxury EV offering will need to be tailored to a NEW set of parameters, most probably having little to do with "performance" and "infotainment" for the luxury client. There is indeed a reason why the latest Bugatti "still" has an ICE engine in it.

The super luxury market has really struggled overall; there has been a democratization of "luxury" and "performance" vehicles given the transition to electric. The Rolls-Royce Spectre is a fantastic product also, so not wonder it is doing well. Thanks for this comprehensive update!

In the past luxury only applied to certain foreign brands, now there are 3 to 4 Domestic options with more on the way…Difficult to see this rend reversing..

There are no luxury domestic (Chinese) EV products. There are PREMIUM EV OEMS. Which is different from Luxury. There was one luxury Chinese EV OEM, that being HiPhi (Human Horizons) but they defaulted earlier this year.

@@davidk.d.7591 Difference is exclusivity and pricing. Hongqi is not really luxury. More like Premium masquerading as Luxury (fake cheap luxury) . Yangwang is more sports car . Hiphi was real luxury / high quality and tech , with the associated pricing.

In general, with the way the economy is, luxury brands such as Porsche are seeing many customers leave for cheaper offerings. The Chinese EV's are very competitive and very good. The cars made by NIO and Li Auto (just to name a few) are all excellent and way more affordable. They also don't look bad anymore. And the new generations of Cayenne and Panameras aren't as appealing to the customers from an aesthetic point of view. The interiors have done away with the traditional shifter and rotary key, which makes them less unique when compared to an EV interior. Another recent high-profile EV, the Su7 by Xiaomi, is really going to eat into the potential sales of the electric version of the 718. They are way cheaper and have come into the market a lot sooner. Porsche is actually getting memed in China, where people are jokingly referring to their cars as Xiaomi cars. As an aside, I am really looking forward to the new vantage. It looks so much better, and seems like so much fun.

Are 2 hand cars cheap in china? do they lose a lot of value? I’m talking of foreign brands
@HiddenWen
@HiddenWen 3 ай бұрын
@@procrastinatingrn3936 I think it's the same as second-hand cars outside of China. Depends on brand. According to data (I'm not sure these are the most reliable, but they are the only data I've seen), Porsche is actually the luxury brand that holds the most value over time. Typically the Germans depreciate the most, and that's the same in China. Lexus also seems to depreciate quite a bit, but since they're cheaper upon buying, it's not as big of a hit.

a NIO and a Li Xiang will never be regarded the same as a Porsche or a Ferrari. Certainly NOT by those with the resources to afford a Porsche or a Ferrari. Regardless of how much you get for your "value for money" Don't confuse Premium with true Luxury.
@HiddenWen
@HiddenWen 3 ай бұрын
@@dullumullu I didn't say they were. I simply stated in these bad economic times, more people are willing to spend that money on the NIO or Li Auto, and they aren't necessarily getting a worse car. Luxury is just that...a luxury. When you can't afford it, it's useless. And many people are realizing (especially with the current generation) the Cayennes and Panameras are just VAG vehicles that charge a premium thanks to the PORSCHE logo. Ferrari is in a completely different stratosphere in terms of target market, this is an ultra luxury brand whereas Porsche is at best luxury.
@dullumullu
@dullumullu 3 ай бұрын
@@HiddenWen Again, those that CAN afford a Porsche Cayenne will continue to look for an equivalence in Luxury products. They won't "step-down" to a NIO or Lixiang. Indeed there is a stratification in the Luxury market with the top being open ended, but again , don't confuse "status symbolism" for practicality and value for money. There is no REAL pragmatic and practical reason why one should buy a Porsche SUV over say a Cadillac. Yet Porsche outsells Cadillac in pretty much every single market. So, the NEW luxury product offering will obviously be adjusted, with performance no longer being one of the differentiation parameters, but the demand for having a vehicle that "stands-out" and showcases success will never change. Good enough is defnitely not what that kind of clients are looking to invest in.

Strange circumstances with Porsche. Do you believe the Macan Electric is not successful because the local Premium EV Segment "competitors" are good enough or because there is less demand for Luxury EV Products ? After HiPhi's failure I would tend to the latter but I would love to hear your opinion.
@williamdgh7942
@williamdgh7942 3 ай бұрын
I would say it’s because there are a lot of local competitors. That compact SUV market is loaded with options. And Macan is not high end enough for customers to buy it just because of the brand.
@dullumullu

@@williamdgh7942 So what is required for true luxury? Something no Chinese brand can currently offer as it would inevitably be tied to a less prestigious brand. What is a true LUXURY EV Brand offering ? No silly responses like NIO and Honqi because they are not luxury. Could you please speak about the China retaliation to EU EV tarifs for big ICE motors ?
@ricosun

I think its just part of the temporally strengthning EU's hand at the neogotiation table with China. Ultimately EU has to work with China on a deal where they can partner up to divide up rest of the world's Auto market. They might block China from EU for the moment, but its the overseas market that is ultimately going to treaten EU automakers. Chinese automakers are not only aggressavilty taking market share in SE Asian and S American and other non auto industy countries. But also Investing and developing manufactoring bases to feed those markets, which ultimately will become their global supply chain to enter EU and even the US market. A car thats built using a mix of countries as suppliers simply cannot be blocked. The Chinese plans are already in motion. They are already estabilishing local EU dealership network. Manufactoring bases in Thailand are already online, with Malaysian, Eastern European and Mexican etc plants readying in 2025 and 2026. They are also building massive fleets of RORO cargo ships for linking up their global supply chain. All the chess pieces are being moved into position. I think EU might try to delay the inevitable by pushing back the low emission / ev mandate, but China will be smart and offer EU a deal they cannot refuse. The opportunity for EU is to join China's global supply chain network, and totally take out Japanese and Korean automakers' market share. At least this is the way I see it.

@@antihypocrisy8978 Europe is mature auto market with very high ownership pentration. Therefore apart from natural growth, any new comer to the market is replacing existing players. Therefore new jobs created, means old jobs lost from other brands. If EU wants to grow their auto industry they have to look outwards. Unfortunately the global auto market cake just isin't growing fast enough. Somone will miss out. I think its going to be Japan and Korea, they are in the weakest position.

The Macan EV is a decent car but a ridiculous proposition at its price point. It made sense when it was the people’s Porsche, something an upper middle class family could get into at 50-60k USD. But at 100k what people used to pay for an S class 5 years ago, that is insane. It is nowhere near good enough relative to its competitors to justify a sizable premium.
